Vivaldi's 'Winter' plays in my head as I step inside and the Russian Nutcracker dolls stare a warm blankness of welcome back at me - and I begin to observe things more closely as I go - to the end of the rainbow. Norwegian cup sets and German decorative plates are set up in front of flowing paintings of cherry blossoms, oils of creepy kids and alternative art canvases and it darn near broke my heart to leave the French prints behind. Look up to see candelabras and left to see a antique ice bucket - all of this I adore. Manual hand mixers and beaters next to flour and sugar silos, enamel coffee pots and Pyrex tanned glass crockery. My arms were filling up so I bought two bags and went hither and tither and placed two egg cups inside and a Ralph Lauren roll-up mat with pillow. Between the hand blown blue and green glass galore the large pewter population, frosted glass of polar bears and Mickey Mouse - I had to have it all, but I live on the road and I shant - much to my sadness my rainbow was shortened on this day.

We first contacted Hart in an effort to get children involved in community service, and we wanted to donate cat toys and food. In this process, we have discovered the gem that Hart is. The staff is monumentally kind, selfless, and just the exact people you would want to take care of any animal. The entire place is so clean in every corner, that you can be assured any pet you adopt from here has had exceptional care and love. Andy works there and he is one of those people who just glows with compassion. He was so kind and patient with our children, informative and clearly loves all the animals. Plenty of Parking during the day, it shares spots with the BBQ Restaurant Next door, so as that business picks up, it can get a little crowded. I was browsing as my sister was bringing things for consignment and wish I knew about this place prior to some of the purchases I made for her kids. At that time it was just the founder Bob Miner and his wife giving tours. Now DH has grown to be a sprawling animal sanctuary that even had a short stint reality TV show at one point (really sad that did not continue). Currently, with all of the expansion, it is now hard for visitors to get a sense of how Bob started the sanctuary by taking in exotic animals seized by the Maine warden service and how creating a sanctuary for those animals helped him heal from PTSD he was experiencing as a Vietnam veteran. I almost wish there was a welcome video in the visitors center... In any case, this is an incredible spot to check out if you happen to be in the area!
