I just moved to the Augusta-area and I have been looking for interesting things to do. I saw a sign for D.E.W. Animal Kingdom on my drive home one day and thought it'd be a fun activity for company. And this past weekend I got my chance to visit. We were drawn first to the primates. There were all sorts of monkeys, but I really couldn't tell you what kinds. I know there was a Gibbon for sure and beyond the monkeys was a Servil which is lovely leopard-like cat. Then we encountered a pair of pacing lions, but our attention was quickly caught by a duo of amorous tigers! Medena the Hyena was a close runner-up after the tigers. We got to watch her devour a scapula and listen to her bizarre "mooing" sounds. Farther along was another group of lions which was very entertaining to watch as they were quite playful. Other animals that we saw included mountain lions, black leopards, lynx, a snarling bob-cat, slobbering camels, cavis, kangaroos, wallabies, ponies, donkeys, deer, pot-bellied pigs, wolves, zebras, a kookaburra, tortoises and a baby Siberian tiger cub. Oh, and D.E.W. stands for Domestic Exotic Wild and is a haven for all sorts of interesting animals. You can learn a lot about their mission on the website, but a lot of the animals have been rescued. Other things to remember: Wear footwear that you don't mind getting muddy (my companion regretted his choice of flip-flops) Bring bug spray (it's black fly season now and the mosquitoes will be here soon) Cash only

This is a great place to see animals of all kinds. Such a nice place to bring your family to. They take wonderful care of their animals and the staff are very friendly and knowledgeable.

Much larger layout and variety of animals that we expected! Definitely worth the day trip drive to the bit off the beaten path location.

My parents used to bring us all the time when we were young; I think because MWP really IS NOT a zoo (so don't come here with that expectation). It's more of a rehabilitation center or sanctuary than anything else, and I think my parents liked how educational, real, and local it felt. We came to see Maine's wildlife in their natural habitat recover from injury, or because they were formally raised in captivity by humans, or because they were orphaned for whatever reason. It's a safe place for ME's critters who can no longer survive in the wild. (PRO TIP: Ask the staff about the animals. They have a list of all their names and how long they've been residents; if you reeeeally pry, the staff also have favorites and it's fun to hear their stories about the animals' big personalities!) I've come back a few times as an adult, and I still appreciate it. It's a gentle, relaxing way to spend a couple of hours. I've seen bears, turtles, raccoons, deer, skunks, and - yes - even moose (though, again, set your expectations accordingly: they are notorious for NOT showing up for us spectators). I have, over the years, spent a stupid amount of money feeding the trout at the pond by the hatchery. There's a ton of information there about how Dry Mills is important to the preservation and continuation of our aquatic ecological balance (they release thousands and thousands of fish into the wild every year, it's incredible!). Maine Wildlife Park itself is worth the visit, but they also have events throughout their open season as well including archery classes, plant sales, fairy-themed days, and harvest parties (just check their website FMI).

They had a wide variety of local wildlife. The bull moose unfortunately was at the far end of a…read morelarge wooded enclosure, making it difficult to get a good view. Other enclosures provided close up views of porcupine, fox ann cougar

But the real action was going on downstairs anyway. Once we went down stairs we were greeted and shown around the running displays. Very impressed with the obvious skill and dedication of the model builders. I'm more into the "toy train" look rather than realism, but even so it was VERY impressive. We were told if we become members we can take operator lessons and then are allowed to bring your own trains in and run them on the clubs model lines. That sounds like a lot of fun! One important thing: GFMRC has several different scale models to run your trains on, though the focus is definitely on HO. I saw only one elaborate set-up for O scale "three railers" which is my preferred size.
