I don't cut my hair regularly, only when it's driving me nuts (I typically get my hair cut twice a year... I know, terrible), so I've never really had a default-salon. A few weeks ago I had this overwhelming need to cut my hair... perhaps because I'd gone too long without cutting it, or maybe because I'm currently studying for the CA Bar and I'm borderline insane. Either way, I wanted my hair cut and it had to be that day. I had been to Ellure back when it was in East Village and had a great experience, so I decided to go back. Much to my excitement, Ellure had moved to North Park (much closer to where I live). I left a message with Jenny - but unfortunately it was the one day of the week Ellure was closed! Regardless, Jenny called me back and said she would come in to do my hair even though they were closed... ON HER DAY OFF! Talk about valuing her customers!! She was great and totally understood that bar prep had me on a tight schedule! To top it off, she gave me a great haircut and tons of tips on how to style my particular type of hair. My best friend use to cut my hair and she now lives in Indiana. So whenever I need a haircut, I search for a salon that people like. I had a meeting downtown so I found a couple places near that I could walk to. The first one had only one person working and the other was a little pretentious. As I was walking to my car, I saw Ellure across the street. "Walk-ins welcome" looked promising. When I entered, I was greeted warmly and with a "Yes, we can take you." My stylist, Teela, asked "What would you like to do?" I told her that she could cut my hair any way she wanted as long as it was short and that I'm a teacher so in some ways it should be conservative, but something I can make hip and cool on the weekends. This request can sometimes throw a stylist off, but she gave me a great cut! She also gave me a scalp massage and hot towel on my face...way cool! We also had a great conversation. This salon is a great find and not pretentious like some other places. I've done this before in Hawaii, but now I have somewhere closer to home. Jenny's skills with a pair of scissors is akin to a samurai with a sword, a sushi chef with a sashimi knife or even gamer nerd with a mac laptop. Wooooohoooo. After a recommendation, and after reading review after review, I decided to go to a different salon. My hair is thick as it gets. Coarse, dry, and very thick. Jenny even said my hair is probably thickest among all her clients. Anyway, this is also the reason I had to look for a new hairstylist because my hair easily gets unmanageable. :( Now, it took me an hour to get to Ellure. It's right off the Park and Market trolley station. I made an appointment at noon. Went in the shop a little late but Jenny still welcomed me in. She was very nice. I felt very comfortable when I went to the shop. Jenny is very accommodating. I had fun talking to her, as well. Onto the haircut, she changed some of her tools to fresh new ones because she said my hair needs new sharp tools. She really cared about giving me a good haircut/style. She recommended a spikey haircut which was totally fine with me. She took her time and didn't rush even though she was gonna go home after cutting my hair. She is very knowledgeable at what she does. She noticed things from my hair that my previous hairstylist has done -- and she did a lot of new things to my thick hair. She texturized it. She used terms that you know a true hairstylist would know. She also gave me tips to a good hairstyling. She even told me I'm like a son to her now. And that makes me even more comfortable going to that shop in the future! New found mom! haha. :) Well, costs me $22 to get a haircut -- despite of my very thick and coarse hair. Gave $6 in tips. (which I hope is enough) haha. Anyway, I also have to add, she shampooed my hair twice! The second time, she gave me a head massage and placed a hot towel with that soothing scent. Mmmm. Jenny gives great haircuts, and she makes great conversation while giving a haircut. This is the one place I've gone to where I actually get compliments on my haircut. Jenny knows what looks good with my hair, so it's nice to know I can always get a good cut here. She has customers from out of town (out of the country in some cases!), that make it a point to stop by here when they're in town. Do you have complicated hair, ladies? Well I have the thick, course, slightly wavy hair. And, I found where I can go to handle that. This is a good, reasonably priced, and comfortable place to go! I'm one of those girls who can't afford the super expensive salons. So I've had more than my share of bad experiences at places like Supercuts and Paul Mitchell School, and I've had my regular stylists get lazy. It's taken me a while to grow out a bad cut I got from Paul Mitchell last March (including my stylist in October who decided to give that same style but the longer version). I'm growing it out long now and I just went in for a trim. My stylist, Teela, understood right away what I needed. I didn't need to explain a lot or bring in a picture. My layers from the bad cut are blended in so well now! I got a wonderful surprise in how well my hair was trimmed and cleaned up. AND, I found a stylist who knows how to keep it real with how to maintain my hair. She straightened out all the bs I've heard from so many people about how to manage hair. It felt good that she wasn't constantly trying to sell me on some product or service. Not to mention, she's just easy to talk to (you don't end up feeling like you're trying to impress your trendy stylist). This experience was DEFINITELY worth the $45 for me. Check with them to see how much your haircut will be. Parking: There are the typical one-way streets of Downtown, but it's really not that hard to figure out. I've been coming here ever since I moved down the block last August. I was sorta reluctant because I'm a guy and "Salon" sounds like a lady's place for nails, wedding prep and the like. Teela has been cutting my hair. She does a great job, is friendly and I always leave feeling great. Once, the owner, (Jenny, I think) cut my hair and she did a great job as well. CONS: Parking is difficult in this area and there are shady characters at the trolley stop (I have seen drug deals go down). Male haircuts are $22 bucks but you get a nice head massage when you get your hair shampooed and you get a warm towel on your face. I admit it - I like getting pampered a bit! read more

I found Ellure on yelp after spending more than $40 on a haircut for the past few years. No more, finally a place for a professional Men's haircut that is affordable. A very accommodating and friendly staff, I left feeling like I got a salon treatment. Super convenient if you work downtown, I was in and out on my lunch break but didn't feel like it was rushed at all. Teela was great and we had a nice chat, she used a straight razor too for an added touch. Highly recommended. Parking is a drag, and don't use mapquest to find it or you'll end up by the zoo! Its been a couple years since I've last reviewed my #1 salon, so I thought i'd go ahead and update you all with my recent experiences. I've been going to Jenny at her salon for my haircuts and highlights every 3-4 months or so to maintain a healthy set of locks. Jenny educates me on how to care for my hair which I tremendously appreciate. I just moved from San Francisco to SD and needed to find a new place to get my hair cut and colored for my engagement photos. For those of you who color your hair, you can understand how stressful it is to get excited about trying out new salons. Especially, when something like your engagement photos are pending. After reading all the amazing yelp reviews below I called Jenny and set up an appointment. The Salon itself is beautiful, and Jenny has such amazing positive energy. As soon as I started talking to her all my apprehensions were put aside. One thing I really liked about Jenny is she asked me what wanting, and provided awesome suggestions that reflected my style. Her feedback made it clear that she is very talented and genuinely cares that you are happy when you leave the salon. You know how girls are always looking for that hairstylist and then they will never change? I just found mine today. I emailed Jenny about setting up an appointment, she was very flexible with my busy schedule. I told her what I wanted, she gave me her expert opinion, and I love my new hair cut! She worked with whatever hair type you have and will find you the best look for you depending on what you are trying to achieve. I was a little skeptical about going short but I've never been more pleased with the results. I was so relaxed with her, I fell asleep while she did my hair. The color came out amazing! The cut was perfect. I got the Liscio Japanese hair straightening done by Jenny about a month ago and I ABSOLUTELY love it!! She did such an amazing job- I've tried it all (Bio Ionics, Brazilian Blowout, Yuko, Keratin treatments) and this is by far my favorite. I have very kinky/curly/puffy hair and I barely need to run the flat iron through it now. Jenny went above and beyond and took extra precautions since I had highlights in my hair, making sure it was done perfectly with the least amount of damage. I can't get enough of this place. REALLY! I just returned last week and hung around Ellure Salon for an extra 30 minutes when I'm sure Jenny wanted to kick me out, but she was too nice to. For asian guys, it is ridiculously hard to find a salon/barber who 1) knows how to cut Asian hair 2) will actually make it look good and not just shave it or give you a mushroom cut, 3) won't charge you an arm and leg for a simple haircut, 4) can speak English and 5) not be awkward. Not surprisingly, Ellure Salon has met all five requirements and gone above and beyond all of my expectations of what to expect from getting my hair cut. For all you other non-asians, she can make you look 20 years younger, 3 years older, and sexy at the same time. Jenny is probably the best hair cutter/stylist I have been to in the United States. I've spent $100 for some ridiculously expensive cuts which looked just the same, and sometimes worse. I've also spent $5 on a cut which forced me to wear a hat for several weeks until my hair grew out. But, Jenny has given me consistently excellent hair cuts that I have always been happy with and always at a reasonable price. With her, I have never looked at my hair and said "man, this looks like a 3 year old went through this with scissors, I kind of want to tell her to change it but I'm too nice to make a scene." I couldn't ask for more. REGARDLESS, you get more when you come here. This isn't just a haircut, it's an experience, a friend, and a resource. Jenny makes a hell of a social net worker and will never make you feel uncomfortable while you are in her care. She always keeps up with the latest trends in fashion and knows what type of cut to give. She gives the best deals for literally, the best hair products I have used. When you are in a rush, she'll make a spot for you just in time to save your hair for the holidays, an event, or even a date. She responds to calls timely and professionally, she keeps her salon clean, and she will do everything to make you feel at ease while she is waving a pair of scissors over your face. She's genuine and you can feel it throughout your haircut, in her salon, and with every interaction you will have here. Came 2 more times after my original haircut and it was a bit rushed. Still a decent haircut. One thing that turned me off is the chatting during the haircut. It's normal to make small talk with your customer and vice-versa with your stylist, however, I felt like I was being barraged with questions. I felt a little uncomfortable on the last 2 visits and am now looking for somewhere else to go. Questions about what I do both times I came in (didn't remember), asking about how much I pay for rent (none of your business), and basically prodding when I felt like relaxing. 3 stars for a decent haircut and great location, but minus 2 for the awkwardness and because there's no A/C- very hot in the salon and small/crammed. read more

I saw my roommate's great haircut and knew I needed to head to Ellure Salon and Jenny to have my own locks cut last year (my first visit there). I have straight hair and at the time there was a whole lotta nothing going on with my hair. After a visit with Jenny and talking to her about how I wanted a manageable style to my hair, she did probably one of the best cuts I've ever had. I think Jenny has a very clear understanding and talent when it comes to making straight hair look glamorous and well styled, yet still easy to maintain at home. I really can't say enough. Over the summers when I am home on break and need to have my hair trimmed, I leave this other salon a little sad because I know Jenny could have done a better cut and for less than what I pay at home. One thing I recommend is having either an early morning or afternoon appointment as street parking can be challenging near Ellure Salon. There are also a lot of one way streets, so if it will be your first time going to that area of town, leave a little earlier to ensure that you have sufficient time to find parking. read more

simply uh-mazinggg service!! I called in to make an appointment and the day of, she called to make sure the time was still good for me and even tried to give me tips as to where to find parking! The aura of the salon is just soooo cute! super homey and quaint. LOVED it. I had Jenny and she was just such a wonderful person, it was sooo easy to talk to her and be comfortable! She was so personable I wanted to call her my new best friend haha. Ok, onto the actual hair quality! PERFECT. I got some low-lights (red highlights) and she was just so helpful. She explained to me the process and offered her opinion on what she thought would look good which is such a plus because it's always nice to get an opinion from someone who actually knows what they are doing. Jenny Lee is a one woman show. She is the only hairdresser at this location. I have been getting my haircut with Jenny for the last two years and I must say she gives the best men's haircuts I have ever had. My hair is not easy to cut with the cowlicks that I have. Jenny is friendly, funny, and keeps her appointments. I understand she specializes in Japanese straights but I am not too sure what that means. I have thick,coarse, wavy ..totally unmanageable long hair & have been straightening it for quite some time now. But still my hair never had any shine or life ..they appeared very rough at the ends. Hence I booked my appointment early morning & on the day of the appointment I received a call from Jenny asking me which kind of coffee I preferred & if i wanted anything to eat as she was at Starbucks.This act of courtesy really impressed me.
