We LOVE this dog park! It's great, but what we love the most is the separation between large dogs and small dogs! This is great! Unfortunately, lately there has been people who bring their super tiny dogs into the large dog area and then complain if a big dog is playing too "rough". PLEASE FOLLOW THE RULES AND KEEP YOUR SMALL DOG IN THE SMALL DOG AREA. Unless your dog can handle, but other than that you have no reason to complain. Our dog is still a pup (a big pup) and he is really good with both large and small dogs but some little dogs are just too small. So please it's for you and your dogs own good. Anyway back to the dog park! It's amazing it has a good space to run. It has two little hills in the top area and then a hill (going down) on the other side. It's a beautiful dog park. Very well maintained. Has a water fountain so we can refill the water bowls. There are countless tennis balls laying around to play fetch & at this moment I believe there's a soccer ball, I'm sure someone left it. For the little dog owners, your area has a little hill too! It's a cute little area! Regardless of the 1% who don't follow the rules I'm giving this park 5 stars! We absolutely love it!!! read more

My pooch and I stopped by this afternoon. The long awaited "official" dog park in Silver Spring opened a week ago. As of now it's clean and sparse. There is a lot of cement, which I hope doesn't heat up too much in the peak of the summer. The middle of the fenced in area has AstroTurf that felt really warm when I put my hand on it. The large dog area has two hills, while the small dog area (under 20lbs) has one. There is a covered picnic table for people to rest/socialize. There is a water pump to fill the [metal] bowls place around the enclosure. My pooch isn't very social and just hung out by me and panted. I'm not sure if we will return. It's great for people with four-legged companions that like to chase other furry friends. It's mostly open with a few trees on the edges of the enclosures. Poop bags are provided, but may not always be available, so be sure to BYOBags. Parking is off Ellsworth, but when the new tennis courts open, and the townhouses across the street are completed and occupied, parking may be scarce. Don't park on the driveway adjacent to the park. It belongs to the homeowners next door. They need to get better signage. Or maybe a gate. read more

This is not a child's playground. I saw the world's DUMBEST mother today letting her infant (looks like he was learning to walk) toddle at the bottom of the dog yard. A lot of dogs defecate and urinate along that fence line. There are bad dog owners who never pick up their dog's poo. In essence, it's an unflushed toilet. There are dogs that see small children as prey animals and will attack them. The dogs are off-leash in here and they are much faster than human beings. Think about how quickly some of these dogs become agressive towards each other. Please don't bring your small children in here to play. If something terrible happens, that's all on you, the dumbest parent on the planet. I believe that the county needs to post a permant large sign warning about liabilities and setting restrictions as pertains to children, whether they be accompanied or not. read more

This is a nice park located right in the downtown Silver Spring area. The small dog and large dog park is separated. The small dog park is super small, has no actual greenery or grass. It's just AstroTurf in the middle and is all cement. I can see this being a bad idea in the summer when the cement heats up. The large dog park also is just cement and AstroTurf. But is MUCH bigger and has so much more AstroTurf and trees for shade. I was hoping it would be dead in the large dog park so I could bring my little pup over the large side. She doesn't do well with large dogs, they are much too aggressive for her. And it just remained busy. While no one came over to the small dog park. Both parks are new and super clean. I just wish they would do more with the small dog park. Otherwise, it's a great spot if you live in the area. Otherwise, I suggest other dog parks in the county for small dogs. read more

The Ellsworth Dog Park is the best in the area! We come from NW DC and go 4-5 times per week, since the dog parks in DC are much smaller. There is a large area for them to run around, plenty of shade for dogs and humans, a small dog park and water is available for the dogs. We have been bringing our Great Dane since she was four months old. She's grown up there and learned how to socialize: how to greet dogs and humans, playful wrestling and chasing, etc. Most owners are friendly and watchful. Doggie bags are provided; most dogs seem to go number two soon after arrival. read more

We found Ellsworth Dog Park almost by accident, there aren't many signs and it is unclear where to park unless you approach it from the Ellsworth side. The park is well maintained, the fence is secure and having running water 8/12 months is a bonus. Separating the smaller dogs is also a great idea. My only real issue is that with the close proximity to a playground, dog park users often bring their human children into the dog park and then get upset when said children get knocked over by frolicking dogs. There are 50+ kid parks in Montgomery County and just a few dog parks. Small kids need to be left at home or on the playground. I'd like to see an occasional walkthrough by animal control for spot enforcement. read more

Be careful here. The park is maintained well and the dog space has a great layout. However, almost every time I've gone there's been a dog fight. Some dogs just don't do well at dog parks, and a lot of owners don't care and bring their dogs anyway. Now, I only go during off times and hope there are no other dogs around. Around 5 o'clock is the worst- there are upwards of 20 dogs sometimes and it's almost inevitable a fight breaks out. read more

Pibble owners, beware of humans that go to this park. Discrimination happens here. It's mostly friendly but not worth always being on alert in case a human will accuse your dog of something they are not doing. Not worth it. I saw first hand someone call the cops when they were the ones in the wrong. Go to Wheaton instead. read more

It's a darling little park. I took my dog there and met some of the nicest people on the small dog side (up to 20 lbs). Some people bring larger dogs on that side also who are calm or older. We saw several fights break out on the large dog side and it's known that owners are less attentive to picking up after their pooches on that side as well. My only complaint is that the small dog section is VERY small (hence 4 out of 5 stars). Also, many people approach the park by the swings on the children's playground which I think could be dangerous with owners who may lose control over more aggressive dogs. While departing and heading toward my car, my dog was attacked by a Pit Bull/Yorkie mix (go figure!). The owner had little control over his dog. My dog seemed interested in greeting the dog and so I asked the owner if it was OK to which he replied yes. When my dog sniffed his dog in the typical dog greeting fashion his dog immediately attacked him. Thankfully I was able to pull my dog away from it by pulling back on his leash/harness before he was injured but I was angry. Let it serve as a warning to be wary of people who are ignorant enough to actually bring aggressive dogs to the park. Your dog may have a good temperament but not all dogs do. read more

It is my understanding that this park is rather new. It is in very good shape. Now that they provide doggie do bags it is staying very clean. They have areas for both large and small dogs. They also have water for dogs and humans. There is shade and seating. Very nice! read more

Very nice park -- for dogs and people. I took off one star because there are NO bathrooms. Yep, that's right. This is a huge park with a play area for kids, dogs and tennis courts, but no bathrooms! They also recently set up a large sitting area with chairs and a triangular shaped tarp/canopy for shade. But because of it's shape, in the summer, when it's hot as h*LL, you get no shade. So, the canopy is really more decorative than useful. Replace the tarp and get some toilets, and I'll give you 5-stars! read more

Today was my second time coming to this park. My Leo's second time going to a dog park. I normally just take them to Arcola elementary and let them play in the park by closing off the fence. Decided to give a dog park a chance since my dogs are not the best in socializing with other dogs. Can't even say the d word because they go crazy. I have two little ones Bella the shih tzu and Leo the Chihuahua. First day on Thursday was a very good experience. I always carry my own tennis balls so that they can run and play. Slowly two more owners came in with two dogs each and they were all playing individually. My Bella wanted her balls and that's it. Leo was staying around me and unsure if he wanted to play. The owners were all attentive to their dogs. One dog wanted to just keep one of the balls but the owner was always nice on giving it back to me. Once she left I gave it to her dog. Both owners actually left together and we had the park to ourselves for about 30 minutes. We returned again on Saturday and my Bella again had a great time. But my Leo was not having it. He kept getting mad at another cutie so he went on time out. The other people there as well were all attentive to their dogs. Witness an almost dog fight in the big dog section. Water fountain is available with bows (dirty bowls) but I carry my portable one for my little ones. Negative side is that it's too small. Not enough space for them to be able to run. My little ones enjoy being able to run after their balls but the space is so limited. If there were to be a bigger space for the smaller dogs then it would be perfect. I feel like I still have to walk them to get them a good workout. Also, not enough shade for when it gets hotter. I'll still continue to take them twice a week to allow them to socialize with other dogs. Even tho the small dog area is small I prefer this over the Wheaton park. My Bella had been attacked there by the bigger dogs so that'll never happen Avon. read more

The dog park has lots of space for my dog to run. There are two sides separated by a fence: one side for dogs under 20 lbs and one side for dogs above 20 lbs. Although this is not a hard and fast rule, and it really depends on the temperament of your dog and who is on what side. For the side with dogs above 20 lbs, the park slopes downward which can lead to mud puddles pooling at the bottom on rainy days. There are lots of tennis balls all around, and some little toys on the smaller side. My dog is 25 lbs, and she loves playing on both sides. read more

Since moving to Petworth we are no longer in walking distance of a dog park, booo! So we've been driving to upshur park, about a 5 minute drive. Its a big space but its all gravel and not too comfortable for the 2 legged people! My boyfriend heard about this new park in Downtown Silver Spring, so we took a 15 minute drive up here and its GREAT! Its really big, with lots of different types of terrains! There are some astroturf mounds that are fun for the dogs to run up and down, and then just a big hill with grass/dirt/leaves that give the dogs a LOT of room to roam. I would LOVE to live closer to this park, but it's gonna have to just be a special occasion spot for us. read more

This is a great smaller urban dog park especially if you don't want to travel out to the Wheaton Dog Park, which has powdery white dust everywhere, and always feels gross. The best is still the Cabin John Dog Park for the perfect size and even the small dog park there is big. This one is miniature in comparison and slopes downwards and isn't flat. My dog always wants to stay on the higher ground and rarely drifts down to the grassy area at the bottom of the hill due to vantage points. The smaller dog park area is rarely used, and not a great area for the dogs to run within there. Nevertheless, this is a terrific place to exhaust your pooch, or to get them to interact, sniff, and kill their boredom. There is ample parking. The folks who come here are all friendly and conscientious dog owners who DO monitor their dog's behavior. read more

Ok-ish park. However the owners of the dogs are not so great. I just took my 1 yr old husky and 3 yr old corgi here for the first time. We usually go to the Olney park and thought we would try a new venue for a change of pace. I have had no issues with other dogs or owners there. My issue is with an elderly gentleman that brought his golden. My husky and his dog were playing, mind you my husky is still learning that each dog sets their own boundaries of play so I am religious about keeping a good watch on him. HOWEVER, this gentleman went to hit my dog with his cane because he felt they were playing too rough without giving me a chance to call him off for him too learn something very important. This was a learning opportunity for my husky, and he now missed his chance to become a better dog because I was worried this man was going to strike him. I know my husky still has a lot to learn, however it is never ok to go strike another persons dog. We will never be going here again. People are dicks. read more

The large dog area is a mixture of grass, concrete, and AstroTurf, with a couple of rolling hills for the dogs to romp around on. There is plenty of space for the dogs to run around, and a decent amount of shade from the shelter and a large tree. Someone has brought a kiddie pool, which is great for dogs like mine who love water. The park is always relatively clean, which is nice. The small dog area is all concrete and AstroTurf, and doesn't have much shade- so a lot of small dog owners bring their pups to the large dog area, which isn't ideal for every dog (some of the small guys get pretty intimidated). read more

There are no lights so this park is unusable after work in the winter months. There are constant dog fights and many of the dog owners do not pay attention or care. It's a really nasty culture. We've been to many dog parks in DC but we moved to Silver Spring and this is the closest dog park to downtown but we won't be coming back. Been going since the park opened but no more. Almost every time we've been to this park there's been a fight sometimes humans fighting, sometimes dogs fighting, sometimes both. While it's normal for dogs to get in tussles, it's the responsibility of the owner to watch and intervene before it gets out of hand or at least immediately after something starts. Never in our years of going to dog parks have we experienced a place like this. A woman refuse to pull off her dog that was biting our friends dog, then assaulted our friend because he pulled her dog off his dog. We heard a guy justify his aggressive dog noting that "dogs fight, and sometimes they draw blood" so it's fine. Our dog got bitten and the owner took no responsibility. People without dogs bring their children to play in the dog park, which is incredibly dangerous considering there are a lot of dogs and slippery surfaces. There was one guy who played catch with his kid in the dog park and then got pissy because one of the dogs took the ball. It's a horrible culture, which is a shame because it's the only dog park near by. I don't want to be driven out of the dog park by some jerks, but it's constant bullshit and I don't want my dog to be attacked. The park police are unresponsive. The only time it's not insane is around 8am. read more

This park is located near the downtown area, so the location and convenience is great. My issues are that I have not had the best encounters with other dog and dog owners so far. I do enjoy coming here though and I think it is relatively new? So I hope these issues will improve over time. read more
