Just can't say enough about how fantastic these folks are and how much I appreciate them…read more Friday Jan. 12, 2024, we left So. Cal for Eugene Or. to move my granddaughter to be near her parents. Normally this is a 2 day trip up and 2 days back. Day one went without a hitch. Day 2 we got stuck in snow on Mount Shasta and had to turn around and head for Reading. They 3 started out perfectly until we got just passed Medford, Oregon when the road started to get icy. After five hours of crawling I-5, the road came to a stop. Department of transportation had closed the road. We were low on fuel and were chatting with another couple on our hand held radios. They decided to use a nearby inter change as a place to get some rest. As they got off, the husband said he thought there was a truck stop he could reach by nearby side roads, and if he could find it he would let me know. Praise the Lord. He found it! About 10 minutes after he told me how to get there we arrived at Shell Family Mart at exit 163 in Curtain, Oregon. The super friendly attendant filled both my truck and my wife's. He handed us bottles of water, and a card for free coffee inside the mart. He realized that the interstate was closed and told us just to find a place to park inside his lot for no charge and stay until the road was open. I love these guys and by the way the convenience store. Is full of all kinds of goodies and useful things for the traveler.

It's been a while since I popped in to the Smith River Store up near Reedsport. It really feels…read morelike it's in the middle of nowhere, so it is a welcome sanctuary for roadtrippers like myself who occasionally get detoured by overturned eighteen-wheelers during my trek northward. Standard convenience store items are available including Gatorade, chips, and beef jerky. About once a year I break down and eat one of those pickled hot sausages (the "Tijuana Mama") and feel disgusted with myself as it repeats on me the rest of the day with indescribable deep down body burps. Yeah, I had one of those here too. But there's a tavern connected to the convenience store for washing down that junk food. And it's a sure-fire way to meet some of the locals. The bar stools are old tractor seats that (kind of) contour to your butt. The cooler behind the bar hosts an impressive bottled beer selection. And last I checked, they cook and serve pub grub there. So the Smith River Store has been a welcome respite during an otherwise harried journey for me. And they have ancient but functional gas pumps outside to get you on your way. Say "hi" to Troy (often your checkout guy or bartender) 'cause he's hella cool and seems to know these backwoods areas pretty darn good.

This little gem has the coldest beer & the best fries on the river! You pop into the little store,…read morewhere you can find anything you may have forgotten to bring with you, but the real treat is to go through the swinging doors into the tavern. Troy - owner & most likely your bartender is awesome, will hand you a beer and usually has some great music going. You sit down on the tractor seats and you can spend ALL DAY looking around at everything on the walls and ceiling because they ran out of wall room. It truly is the highlight of any trip up Smith River!

If so, Hilltop Market could have the answer to your burning desires. This little independent market, hidden behind a thick patina of beer banners and neon signs, offers up a surprisingly robust beer and beverage selection. With a ton of great local 22oz bombers, high-end cans including 21st Amendment and Caldera, and the usual macro light beers (giant Coronas, anyone?), there's something for every hops-consuming palate. Hilltop also rolls out a deep collection of N/A bevs from Vitamin Water to Mexican Coke and all sorts of interesting energy drinks too. Frankly, I was surprised to find such an insane beer collection so deep in BFE. Chips? Fuggedaboudit. These guys stock every flavor of Pringles (or at least 4 or 5 flavors) as well as a bunch o' random munchies. Everything you'll need to keep you snackified on a hot day down at Richardson or out on your Yacht in Fern Ridge. As for the rest of it, the selection is well above your average Dari Mart or Plaid Pantry but not a full grocery. It's still a convenience store that's simply well stocked. And local. And legit.

The two young people began to argue with me that it WAS a cappuccino. I told them I make myself one every morning, have drank them for years, and know what they are. They basically called me a liar!! Two other ladies there ALSO tried to tell them but they just got more and more rude. I showed a picture of a cappuccino to the young woman who then replied, "I don't want to see your stupid picture!" I told the young man I was going to report their rudeness to the owner and he replied,"I'd like to report YOU to your owner." One of the other patrons that witnessed all this said she would also report them to her friend, Jill, that also works there. They were apalled as well! As a retired middle school teacher, I have to say the horrible conduct of these two young people helps explain what is wrong with our schools. I saw the lack of respect coming when I retired in 2013. So so sad!! No respect for their elders or authority.
