(This is a copy of my Google review.)…read more Birch Bay Dermatology just lost three customers: my daughter, me, and my husband. My 17-year-old daughter phoned to make a routine followup appointment for acne treatment but was told that "the doctor was referring her elsewhere," for unspecified reasons. I happened to overhear this conversation and thought that was really odd, so I phoned the office for clarification. I was told the same thing. I then asked which doctor we'd be referred to, and the answer was, any other doctor we wanted to go to. When I inquired whether there was some reason that Dr. Kallal didn't want to treat my daughter, the person I spoke with said that she didn't know anything. Before this, my family has generally had cordial and respectful relationships with physicians, including Dr. Kallal, so this was a real shock. Since Dennis Ainsworth wrote a Google review for Birch Bay Dermatology 11 months ago that documented a similar "referral" issue, I can only conclude that this is a method that Dr. Kallal uses to rid herself of patients she doesn't want to treat.

CHET WONG SHOULD NOT BE PRACTICING MEDICINE!…read more This man has no empathy or compassion for patients. I waited over a year for my allergy test only to be treated with nothing but disrespect the second i walked into his office. Dismissed anything I was saying to him - told me nothing was wrong with me. Well sir - why am I doused in steroid creams daily and having to take antihistamines in order to just live a normal life. My doctor does not just send referrals for no reason. When telling him I had anxiety regarding needles he met me with nothing but a condescending attitude - also drilling my support person with questions rudely as well. All he did was increase my anxiety to a point of walking out - he got what he wanted. He didn't have to do the allergy test I waited MONTHS for. Screw you CHET WONG I will do everything in my power to make sure you don't ever do this to another patient again. You're a joke with the way you treat people you should be flipping burgers at McDonald's. But doubt they would even put up with your terrible attitude. Front desk lady is a sweet heart tho - feel bad she has to work for such a cold hearted man. Live up to the oath you took as a doctor Mr Wong , or quit your job. Your actions today were pathetic. Treatment consisting of ineffectual, previously rejected puffers actually made me worse. Prompted initiation of emergency 5-day Prednisone course prescribed previously by GP, thank goodness. Called doc for advice when Prednisone didn't work hoping to prevent visit to ER. Zero response. Nada. Either staff failed to pass along msg or doc ignored. As a result, ended up at ER, where attending doc gave shaming lecture: 'WHY don't you have a respirologist? Not an allergist - a respirologist! Are you stupid... etc.' ER docs don't grasp that consumers have NO control over the specialists who treat us. It's as if the law of battery doesn't exist in Canada. Hoped ER doc might make referral to respirologist. No such luck. That would be too easy. Just shaming lecture, another round of Prednisone and decongestant that actually worked unlike Dr. Wadi's. No idea how Dr. W made it through medical school. This is someone who has to be told repeatedly patient does not have a medical degree, please use plain English. Similarly told more than once to refrain from abbreviations not meaningful to anyone without medical expertise. This is someone who during clinic visit turns her computer screen to face the patient as if patient w/o medical training should read and interpret our own medical test results! Clerical support too inept to perform even the perfunctory task of obtaining patient's records from GP without intervention from patient! Gallingly, doc actually complained to patient about treatment protocols, which are determined not by patient but by her licensing body. Surely it is the responsibility of each doc to understand, argue against and, if necessary, overcome obstacles to treatment when it's in patient's interest to do so! Had I not pleaded a persuasive case to GP to obtain consult with respirologist Dr. Wadi likely would have continued billing multiple visits no matter how clearly ineffectual and even harmful her treatment proved. Formal complaint to the BC College of Physicians and Surgeons to follow for preventable visit to ER in breathing distress. Maybe Dr. W is competent with easily identified food allergies - milk, gluten, etc., the low-hanging fruit of allergy practice - maybe, but never for a respiratory matter - NEVER. And never for any illness for which time may be of the essence. This is a doc who would rather apologize to your family when you die a preventable death rather than risk pleading with overseers for a more qualified expert approach.

We were suggested him by a friend with some bizarre complex allergies. He walked in, saw her scratch test results, asked her a few things and before she could even tell him all her symptoms he says "I'm guessing you've been dealing also with xyz xyz xyz" both of us were in tears for her finally not being written off as making it up. He took every symptom she explained in notes, examined her and validated all her bizarre symptoms everyone else wrote off. HE asked her if xyz was also happening, things she didn't realize were linked... he was extremely thorough. The elimination diet he suggests sucks, but that's allergies... it takes work to sort them all out. My sister has been 1y since seeing him and her life (though complex because of food restrictions) is so much better. She can function, eat without going into anaphylaxis etc because he is amazing at what he does. He won't pat your hand and pet your pride, he'll give you honest straight forward information and solutions for what is best practice. Choose to follow his suggestions and diagnosis or not. He does environmental testing even if you come in for food allergies because they are tied together, and one begets the other... it seems to tick people off but there is solid reasoning behind it.

Professional doctor and pretty thorough. My visit this time was good too. I got caught in super bad traffic due to a road accident in front of me and was late for 20mins (later a female patient rushed in saying she was late for an hour) but the receptionist was super kind and told both of us it's alright, that we might have to wait for a bit but we don't need to reschedule for another appointment since we are there already. This pink hair receptionist is super friendly and could chat up with any patient and joke around. It's a pretty quiet area but a friendly and safe environment. Pretty small but definitely clean and organized office. Since I study outside of the country and created a difficult solution for my treatment, but Dr. Chang was kind enough to note down the foreign address and told me he will try to see if he have any contact there that are willing to execute this process if he send me the medication. I ought to hear from him if there is any doctor there, but at least he's putting the extra effort to help me solve this issue.

I had a 10:30am appointment. showed up at 10:15 and the door was locked, but i could hear people inside so I knocked, no response. I waited several minutes and knocked again, still no answer. Another family showed up, they knocked (very loudly), nothing. At 10:35 I phoned, no answer on the phone. shortly afterwards the other doctor left and we were finally able to enter. I didn't get checked in until nearly 10:40, several patients showed up after me and got in before me. I should also mention that there were several receptionists in the office whilst we were knocking on the door, they were chatting to each other so I guess they were too busy to answer the door or the phone. I watched the doctor just kinda walking around nonchalantly not appearing to do anything. I finally go in at quarter to 12. Then he asks me questions, I give him extremely detailed answers (i've been monitoring everything that i had eaten/encountered over 24 hours prior to when i was having reactions). He appears to note these things down but when I got the results I noticed he didn't even bother to check for a couple of the things he himself identified as possible allergens. Anyways, so he does the test, on the one arm when he does the scratching it hurts quite a bit, the other arm didn't. Interestingly nearly every single dot on the one arm that hurt seemed to react (including one of the negative controls, not as much as others but it still was raised). He told me it'd be 10 minutes and then he'd come back to check. He put a newspaper on the desk and left. I waited for 10 minutes, then another 10, and another and another, he eventually came back about 1hour 15mins later. I could see him just kind of walking around the office at points or standing around whilst I was waiting, I'm already pretty mad at this point, I am missing work for this. He comes back in, gives it a glance and makes a few notes, then starts explaining the controls to me (despite me telling him I'm a PhD student in a related field he still treats me like I have no idea whats going on, seemed very uncaring when explaining as well). He then gives me a sheet telling me what i'm 'allergic' to. Well I know I am allergic to a couple of the things he said i'm not allergic to, and then gave me a list of everything i was... what a surprise i'm allergic to almost everything on the one arm. Several of the spots looked very different between the 10 minutes he intially said and the over one hour he actually took so I'm not at all convinced that the results are accurate, especially given the poor controls, but that's it, he gives me the print off and sends me on my way. Now I will have to find another doctor because I'm still having the (allergy) issue and i've wasted months because of him. This man shouldn't be a doctor if he doesn't care/want to do a proper job, people depend on his service. In addition I had to take time away from my own research to attend this and what I figured should've been a max 2 hour appointment ended up taking 4 hours (I noticed on Rate my MD site he has a low rating... with several people having similar complaints, I wish i had checked first)

This was my worst blood draw experience in 37 years. I've never had issues with needles or blood…read moredraws, but Rida Wang (ND) was remarkably inept compared to even the most mediocre phlebotomists and nurses I've encountered in the past. I thought it was weird that a naturopath was doing a blood draw, but figured she must know what she's doing if she's confident enough to offer it as a service and had a student shadowing her. Boy was I wrong. She took an unnecessarily large needle, dug and twisted it in my right arm every which way and somehow still failed to locate a vein while causing intense pain. I literally had to yell, "STOP!" She then switched over to my left arm and eventually managed to draw 2 tubes of blood, but not without significant discomfort. The veins in both of my arms ended up feeling like they were on fire and were heavily bruised. This was also the first blood draw where I've had someone take a pen to mark the corners of my vein so that she wouldn't "miss with the needle". After I complained about them on Google, Rida Wang sent a formal document to me saying that neither she nor her student noticed my discomfort, which I vigorously dispute. Are you telling me with your "20 years of experience", you can't even tell when a patient yells stop, that they're in pain? A true professional would have explained upfront that they weren't that experienced and either offered an alternative or asked if I'd be okay with them practicing on me. However, Rida Wang claims that she's a seasoned professional who has "over 200" blood draws under her belt. This really only made the matter worse because if she's done this over 200 times, then there's even less of an excuse to have missed the mark so terribly. The only solution they offered me was a complimentary 15 minute session with Rida Wang for the bruising -- but why would I want that from a person who couldn't even do a basic blood draw? The damage has already been done. How would a consultation help with anything? Finally, I have reason to believe they're withholding results for the blood test. It's been a month, and instead of simply delivering on the product I already paid over $600 for, they requested that I either sign a waiver or book an appointment with my original naturopath, Jean Wong. As my complaint is not about her, I informed the receptionist that I had no issues booking an appointment to get my results from her. They did not provide a clear response and instead said they were following up with the doctor for next steps. This seems like unprofessional and vindictive behaviour. Don't walk away from this place. RUN. I suffered at their hands and not only did I not receive an apology, I got a wall of deflection and gaslighting, completely devoid of empathy or accountability. Patient care is clearly not their priority here.
