The facility is def a bit dated, but our room was clean and well-appointed, and all the common areas were welcoming as well. Overall a great option if you're in the area.

After spending all day on the lake, we checked in at 6:30 PM only to find out they only accept credit cards, unless you're Canadian, then they accept debit. Thankfully, we had an emergency credit card, or we wouldn't have been able to stay in the room we booked. The lady behind the counter, Laura, was extremely unhelpful. She told us, "I don't know what to tell you, it's your cards that are bad." Another staff member mentioned there was a glitch with some of the credit machines, which is why our debit cards wouldn't work. Despite having our card on file, they refused to accept cash and even had an ATM right behind me. When we finally got our keys, we discovered they put us in a king suite, which is a single room with a king bed and a couch, not the one-bedroom we had booked. When I returned to the front desk, I told the young man that was there that I was put into the wrong room. Laura made sure to come out as soon as she saw me from the back. Laura said that the NEW owners took our room for themselves and that the GM told her to still charge us the one bedroom rate, which was $50 more than the room we received. I requested to switch to a two-queen room, which was $110 compared to $190, but Laura insisted she would have to charge my card again. As a line of people started forming behind me, I pulled up the hotel's website to show the rate for the king suite. Laura reluctantly agreed to discount the rate to $161 after taking my phone from me and looking at the days inn web site, but only after I insisted. She then said, "I don't think anything I do will make you happy, why don't I just check you out?" I told her what would make me happy is to be fair and give me the rate for the room I was put in and not try to upcharge me because the owners took my room. She rolled her eyes, "I will just give you the $161 rate." in a rude clipped tone. I said thank you I appreciate that. After asking for a receipt, she initially refused, stating they only give receipts at checkout. When I asked to take a picture of the computer screen with the new rate, she finally provided a room registration with the discounted rate and made sure to circle the new rate in red marker giving it to me with a scowl on her face. This experience was incredibly frustrating, especially since I visit this hotel regularly for lake boating trips and have never had such issues before. Laura was very rude and unprofessional. I strongly advise staying away from this hotel. Wish I could give 0 stars but unfortunately you have to give at least one.

When I called the morning of my stay I was rudely told no. At checkin the desk clerk ran my credit card multible times, which basically tied up all my existing credit for the duration of my stay. When I pointed out to her that it was an error on her part, she told me if I was unhappy I could go elsewhere. I would have gladly done so if she had not just tied up the bulk of my resources. My room was at the end of a hallway with most of the lights not working and most of the ceiling tiles gone. I opened the curtains to find the outer pane of glass broken and discolored water standing in what was left. The cover to the AC unit was loosely hanging and in need of repair. The mini fridge was sitting atop the desk area and unplugged. Again, I would have chose to leave had her error not tied up all of my existing credit. Every interaction with her or if she was present was increasingly rude and spiteful. Easily one of my worst experiences ever.

The rooms were very clean and stocked with all the amenities you could need. The river view is absolutely beautiful, and the whole area is peaceful and relaxing. If you're in the area, I highly recommend going a little out of your way to support this amazing place and the wonderful people who run it! Sorry--photos are from the website. Ok so I sorta panicked after reading some bad reviews on yelp after I had already booked this place…read morebecause of good reviews on trip advisor. Those concerns were completely unwarranted because we ended up having an absolutely lovely time. I wanted to pick a place that was somewhere between Weston and Fayetteville and Sutton was a very good happy medium. I didn't know how small the town would be and that was a little bit of a surprise but I like that kind of shit, that is why I travel to different places, after all, even if they are different from what I am used to (I roll my eyes at myself). The town, like I said, is very small. There is a big foot museum there that we intended to visit but then forgot. There was a restaurant within walking distance THANK GOODNESS that was very good (Braxton Bistro). There is a convenience store within a few minute's drive. We arrived at around 6pm and there was a man there to greet us, contrary to some of the other reviews I read. He provided the key and escorted us to our accommodations. I chose the "glamping" because I don't love staying in a house and because I figured "when in West Virginia.." And wanted to get a taste of nature...on my own terms. Despite it being "glamping" it was very comfortable. 1/3 of the "tent" was transparent so you could look out on the back yard, trees, and a river running through. It was very cool. The bed was comfortable. The AC worked GREAT. Almost too well. The shower was actually very solid as well, no issues there. There was even a TV in the room which was very much appreciated given it was the first night of the NFL draft during our stay. No issues with noise, other than birds chirping and other "camping" sounds. Everything was clean. Our room even included a mini fridge, I think a microwave if memory serves, and a coffee machine. Our stay in the glamping tent definitely exceeded expectations and was a great experience.

When I left TN yesterday morning I was going to overnight in West Virginia and the original place I had picked out wasn't going to work for a few reasons so I looked for a plan B. I found something that looked promising... The Elk River Hotel and Cafe in Sutton, WV was along my route and looked like a charming Victorian property with vintage decor on a beautiful river setting. It had great reviews and the cafe was supposed to be very good. The hotel is a few miles off of I-79 in West Virginia and I drove through a very depressed looking Main Street and was a bit concerned when my GPS announced, "you have arrived" in front of the hotel, a few blocks down on this same Main Street. Ok... I park, walk up the steps to the wrap around porch and enter the building. There is a big sign on the door saying, "Cafe Closed" due to "unforeseen circumstances" , that's too bad cause I was hoping to catch dinner there. To the right is a lovely (unused) dining area, to the left is an antique filled sitting area and a beautiful wood carved staircase. There is a small reception desk but no one is there, so I walk around saying, "helllooo! Helllllooo! But there is literally no one here....then I see that there is a note of one of the glass front doors advising that the desk is not manned and check-in is self service. I call a phone number on this note and am told that my room is upstairs, the door is open and the key to the room is on the fireplace mantel in the room. I questioned the person on the phone about whether the front door is locked at night since there are no employees there, actually there is not another soul in the building at that point, and as I found out the door is not locked so that guests can come and go ...basically anyone can come in or out. Hmmmm, should I stay or should I go was running through my head. Well I stayed and got a good nights sleep despite my initial concerns that it was a very different experience than I am used to . Going out of your comfort zone can be "uncomfortable" but if you confront and reframe negative self-talk you can embrace new possibilities....and enjoy new experiences, like staying is an old Victorian hotel by yourself in a run down town. When I thought about - or reframed my thinking - it was not that much different from an Air BnB where you self check in. A few other guest did arrive so I was not the only one there ...and once I stopped worrying about "what-ifs" I was able to enjoy my stay. You may want to visit Sutton one day because it is home to The Flatwood Monster Museum and The Bigfoot Museum. If you go, I can recommend staying at the Elk River Hotel... don't be scared.

Pictures and other reviews looked decent, but since I'm apparently naive, we booked a stay here. The check-in person was fine. She made it relatively easy for us to check in and enter the room. It's definitely dated and could use some repair work The bathroom had a toilet seat that wasn't connected to the toilet, so it shifted around a good bit. The toilet seat itself has the kind of wear and tear I'd expect to see in an archeological dig as it had some discoloration and some spots that appeared melted. The bathroom had a riddle as there were two light switches. One worked the light and the other worked the exhaust fan. Sometimes the fan would work independently, but at other times the fan wouldn't work unless the light was. You had to sort out the right combination to make one, the other, or both work. The exhaust fan sounded like it runs on diesel and it sent me a wave of nostalgia as it reminded me of family vacations when my dad would pick the cheapest spot he could find. The room appeared clean, so I consider that a win. The bed was cheap, but we both slept just fine on it. The room was very stuffy when we got in, and as I put a finger on the AC panel, the panel fell off. The good news is that the AC worked. This isn't the worst hotel I've ever been to, but it's definitely not the best.
