Avenue of the Arts South, Penn Center

I'm pretty sure that I was just scammed. A guy came to my house with no signage on his vehicle…read more Virginia license plates. Seemed perplexed by my fireplace. First sign, I told him the flu was closed and he kept closing and shuting the vent on the exterior glass doors. He told me my chimney was really dirty? I didn't use it very much. I almost fainted when I saw his very small brush. Looked nothing like the brushes my previous chimney sweep used. Only a few strands of plastic on it. Seemed to me like it would just bounce around and not clean anything. As I thought nothing really came down the chimney except a small amount of dust. He had his dust vacuum out but couldn't be bothered to get up any extra soot in my fireplace and in the track of the doors. Then we moved to my pellet stove. Clueless as to how to clean it. I had to show him how the rodent baffle was just pulled out to access. Again not a through job at all. No safety check list, no list as to how much each item would cost. I paid $450 in cash. Funny I thought if they seemed good I would use them for vent cleaning. NOPE. When I tried to call the company, guess what their mailbox was full, couldn't even leave a message. I recently had the pleasure of working with Kris the owner of Chimney Troops, and I couldn't be…read moremore impressed with their service. From the first phone call to the final inspection, everything was handled professionally and efficiently. What I appreciated most was their honesty and transparency. There were no surprise costs, and they took the time to answer all my questions without rushing. It's clear they take pride in their work and genuinely care about their customers. I would highly recommend Chimney Troops to anyone in need of chimney services. Reliable, knowledgeable, and courteous--exactly what you hope for when hiring professionals.

Requested a quote for installing an insulated st stl flue liner for the boiler and a quote for…read morecleaning the wood fireplace flue. They gave me a quote for the liner w/o the insulation. I requested 2x to re-quote with insulation around the liner. Got no response. For the fireplace flue, they said it had missing pcs of flue liner, and the rear bricks of the firebox were failing. It needed repair. So I asked about installing a high-efficiency gas fireplace insert instead, and converting it from a log-burning FP to a gas fireplace. I asked if this wouldn't be more cost-effective. Got no response. So, finally, I called. Asked about the flue liner insulation. He said he would re-quote -- but had no explanation as to why it wasn't included originally or why he did not respond to my emails or texts. Then I asked about the fireplace flue: isn't it more cost efficient to install a sealed gas fireplace insert rather than repair the chimney for burning wood logs. Amazingly -- he had no idea what a hi-efficiency gas fireplace insert was!!! I tried to explain that it burns gas, and draws air from the outside using one 3" flue liner (in the chimney) and exhausts the hot gasses to the outside from a 2nd 3" flue liner (in the chimney). He had no clue what this was!!! He only seemed to know about direct vent gas inserts (which exhaust into the home and do not require a chimney for exhaust. (I am familiar with these, and do not want: Heavy water condensation is exhausted into the home and particulate matter is exhausted into the home. Not good.) So, believe it or not, this company seems to be very ignorant of a common fireplace device: modern hi-efficiency gas inserts. If they are this ignorant, I would not trust them to do any fireplace or chimney work. This is very basic fireplace 101.

I tried to reach out to this company again to deal with a leak…read more Got some response but their phones were down at the time and they could only communicate online. Wasn't able to confirm a date and time as they must've been busy. The owner remembered an issue that I had last June, and what he had suggested probably would've prevented this request and this updated review from even happening that I am making presently. None of the others I reached out to had the foresight that AAA Chimney Experts had. AAA is all about quality, prevention, and minimal aggravation for the consumer. They may or may not always have a good schedule for you- it's hit or miss as it seems that way with most businesses in the construction field. Price from prior was reasonable and I would've probably gone with this company this time around, but my request was somewhat more timely than before.

I booked this guy for a simple chimney sweep. While booking the appt he didn't seem like he wanted…read moreto book the appt and said things like "I might be able to do it in about two weeks..." Once the appointment was booked there wasn't much confidence that he would keep the appointment. Because of this, I kept calling around and found someone who could do it sooner and they had a better price, so I went with them. When I called him back to cancel (with over 10 days until our appointment) he got mad and asked why I was canceling, and then proceeded to say, "you know what I'm not going to fight for this [appointment], if this guy wants to cancel then fine." And then he hung up on me. Obviously a real professional. I would suggest you look elsewhere. UPDATE: in reply to the comment below; I was not mad about availability, two weeks out was reasonable. The issue I had was the uncertainty they had that they could "probably get out to me in two weeks." "Probably" doesn't help anybody. So even though we had a date on the books, it seemed very uncertain. This is why I kept looking for other options. I called to cancel with plenty of time to give them a heads up, but the response I got was rude, and yes, they hung up on me. If they were in the field and could not talk then they could 1) not answer and take a message, or 2) let me know that they were currently occupied. Instead they asked why I was cancelling and as I was trying to answer them they interrupted me and rudely said "I'm not going to fight for this, if this guy wants to cancel then fine" and then hung up on me. Rude from beginning to end. If they didn't want to do the sweep job they should have said so, that would have been fine. But to reluctantly take the job and then treat a booked customer like that is ridiculous. It's correct I never received service from them, nor would I want to now. Their work may be top notch, but I didn't have a decent interaction with them during any of the calls. They're rude and they obviously don't see how they treat the people they speak with.
