There were two other customers, we were given comfortable placements casually relaxing on floor mats, I brought my own blanket and pillow. The singing bowls and gongs in a live performance by a skilled musician and interesting person, Mr. Douglas Cardwell, vibrated softly through my head and body as I meditated in flow for an hour. I left feeling positive without any concerns troubling me and outside I felt that I saw brighter colors with wider, more open vision. That night, I slept more soundly than ever, not waking once all night! I overslept a morning meet up with a friend, something I've never done before, I awoke when she rang my doorbell. I feel deeply rested and much calmer and now, I've been telling all my friends that sound baths are really something. I believe it stimulates the brain and that's a very helpful thing for mental and physical well-being.

While my experience in a class may be different from the average visit to the Shambhala Center, I did get to interact with the established members and followed the center's philosophy throughout the entire week (some of the practices that took place I won't describe because they are meant to be sacred). However, I can say that everyone that participated created a comfortable and intimate atmosphere that moved us all. Overall, the exercises focused on Dharma art, a Buddhist practice of creating and existing through your own nature--included a lot of meditation to free the mind. While the practices were derived from Buddhist teachings, I wouldn't say this was a religious retreat. Basically, the week was about being vulnerable and opening up to others in order to empower yourself. Something we all need once in a while.

I was afraid it would be too acrobatic or difficult but it was super fun - I have never smiled so much in a yoga class. Whitney was really great about showing me how to get set up my first time. I have more fun each time I go. Aerial yoga feels like playing in a giant hammock. So refreshing! I don't have a super strong back and have always struggled with headstands in other yoga classes - this one makes inversions fun - so fun - and no stress on your back or neck.

I like that it isn't about "let's get this room as hot as possible." It's basic yoga practice and teaching and healing and all that goes with it. Their classes are great for beginners as well as advanced yogis. They usually have some sort of inward thinking/philosophy type thing or mantra focus which I love about yoga. It's true yoga at its finest and the instructors are great. Another great back to basics and yoga principles studio. Following a disappointing stay, we did some research and found out about the history of sexual abuses by the former guru. says nothing on the website. After learning that, how odd to have a book in the room called "Extraordinary Sex". and then to have a sliding glass door to the porch, that didn't fully close or lock. Felt odd. the heating system they bragged about by phone, geothermal, is so old and had so much air in the pipes that it was extremely loud and those of us in two separate rooms could NOT sleep. they would not give details about the meals at the retreat center, although the website mentions them. there was a meal the night we were there. Several people, none wearing latex or nitrile gloves, all cutting and mixing raw vegetables, which would be served, uncooked. no wonder they hesitated to discuss meals. We did not partake. The person who booked us, and offered that we could join in for meditation, had no knowledge that the days we booked were the staff's and volunteers' days off of practice. So no zen practice at the zen center. The next night we stayed at an AirBNB which is attached to a high-end restaurant. The restaurant wasn't open but we learned that the abbess of the retreat center had eaten there during the week prior. Nice place, prixe fixe at $95 per plate. Maybe there's another story to that, but don't zen practitioners follow a life of simplicity? The soaking pools are FULL of algae. Slippery and nowhere to sit on a clean rock. People in our party all got swimmers itch, it is carried by a parasite commonly found in ducks. Guess what domesticated waterfowl are kept in a pen uphill of the soaking pools? Enjoy your stay!

But there's a consolation prize: the term "U-Mound" is apparently also used to refer to the general rocks in the vicinity, which are approachable via the easy trails. Given the incomplete maps online and reviews of the difficult trails around Embudo, the TL;DR take is that you should look for the 401 trail if you're into scenery but not trying to re-enact some grim 2012-era Sundance movie. There are many elevation options. While I didn't see wildflowers in April, there was a great cacti assortment. Geography note: there are buses relatively close to Copper Trailhead but the ABQ Ride schedule is not generous. As of press time there were no post-sunset buses so I took Lyft.

This area is family, friendly with a ride of different trails and pet friendly as well. Like other areas in the foothills do you have to watch out for cacti and other hazards. Still enjoying the views is worth getting out here. There's a good amount of parking and additional parking further out.
