I worked with Melody for a few months. I had concerns about not feeling satiated and also constant food chatter. I also wanted to lose a few pounds. Melody and I worked together for over a year, and it was with her that I finally got past what was YEARS prior of being stuck. Wanted to share an update--because we all know, the real test is AFTER you've completed your sessions with Melody and continuing the work thereafter. In this picture, it was my first time eating out and learning to choose healthier options/sharing my meal with my sister for better portions. However, I was overall still feeling pretty low about myself here... I knew it was still a work in progress. I have had the pleasure of working with Melody Sayers as my personal trainer for over three months now and am so grateful to have found her!! As a middle-aged, overweight soccer mom who hadn't worked out in a weight room for a couple of decades, I found it intimidating to restart my fitness journey. I know a lot about health and fitness and I was stumped at how to lose 15 lbs that I gained after a knee injury that I sustained right before covid. Over the last 3 years I tried everything I knew about nutrition, which I thought was a lot, and nothing worked. That's when I thought that I need help. When I started this journey, I was apprehensive about working with a dietician. In the past, I have done health classes and did not get results or feel the support that I needed. When I was injured back In June 2020, I was at my heaviest 185 lbs. I was so disappointed in myself and was determined to change, thankfully I was put in contact with Melody. My first session with her put me on the track to better health. From the start Melody was so supportive. She wanted to know what I hoped to get from the program, what my weight loss goals were, how I felt about food, what exercise was I able to do etc. She was extremely thorough. What I appreciated most about working with Melody was her honesty about the process. She let me know that everyone is different and to be kind to myself during this process. In each session with Melody, I learned something new. Two things, though, stand out most for me. First, I learned that I could control my caloric intake, eat a balanced diet, and still lose weight. Second, that it would take an additional 3500 calories a week to gain 1 pound so If I go over a day here and there, don't beat myself up, I didn't mess up my progress and just continue to be kind to myself. (I am truly my worst critic) These encouraging reminders are just one of the things I contribute to my success in this program. Working with Melody was like working with a good friend. Our sessions were effortless; we laughed, I was able to be open and honest about how I felt about my weight loss and she was my sounds ear, constantly encouraging me. I started working with Melody in October of 2019, at which time I was 208 lbs and I had an incredibly strained relationship with food. I've tried so many fad diets and working with other nutritionists and dietitians in the past and I was never really THAT honest, so I made the personal decision to use our first session be as open and humanly possible about the way I felt about food and the way that I used it as a coping mechanism. Melody just listened. She absorbed everything I was saying despite it being a whole lot of too much information. After that, she carefully personalized each session, tackling the things that she believed were root causes of my tumultuous relationship with food and educating me/providing the tools that I could apply to help mitigate that relationship. Each session wasn't the typical "you gotta do better" type interaction, she really talked to me about what I wanted and she took so much time to understand my personal needs. She made me feel so comfortable to be open and vulnerable about my struggles and she constantly reminded me that I'm a human person, bound to wanting to live a restriction free life. In that, she really helped me shift my mindset. In the past when I had lost weight it was very goal number oriented, and when someone complimented me I felt I had attained what I was working for, so I would stop. However, Melody helped me maintain that all that the little successes were a part of an entire lifestyle shift and they stacked up to huge accomplishments. Whenever I would mess up or have a weak moment, she would tell me it was okay and that I was still doing so well. In December, I received a pre-diabetic diagnosis and Melody showed me all the resources she had and took a whole session explaining how to manage and decrease the risk of diabetes. Melody was truly the most important thing to come into my life in a long time. I had never had problems with weight or nutrition - I have always worked out and ate well but in the last two years, something has changed in a bad way and I could not get ahead of it. I was one of the participants in the online fitness and wellness program conducted by the UCSD recreation and Melody was my instructor. We used to meet weekly for a session and throughout the seven weeks, she was just incredible. From week 1 she helped us understand the various basic movements in exercises like the hinge, the push and pull and helped us understand the best form for these exercises. One of the great qualities of her was that she was able to listen to guide very effectively even through zoom and adjusted the levels of exercises according to our strength and needs. I had such a positive experience working with Melody.  Overall, I think of myself as a fairly health-conscious person.  I've been an athlete for most of my life, regularly exercise, and try to eat a healthy diet.  Like most people, though, I go through peaks and valleys with general nutrition and level of activity.  Now, almost 40, with 2 kids, and a busy job, it gets more difficult.  This past winter, after a doctor's visit, I realized that my cholesterol numbers were higher than I would have liked to see them.  I decided to seek out some professional help and found my way to Melody.  She spent the time to learn about what I was already doing that was working, and some things I could work on to become healthier.  She worked with my preferences, my lifestyle, and took my family's needs into consideration.  She checked in regularly, and we made changes to my plan as we went.  Of course, sticking precisely to a plan is not always feasible so, the most beneficial thing I took from my work with Melody has been my learning of what daily nutrition should look like for me, based on my needs and preferences.  Now, no matter what meal it is, I have changed my thinking about what I want on my plate, what I want to see in nutrition labels, and what my daily intake should look like.  I don't feel restricted at all, just more informed.  Months after completing my work with Melody, I have continued to use the strategies and information I learned from her.  I recently had another blood test and found that, with my shift in dietary choices, along with more consistency with exercise, my cholesterol is back down to the levels I feel comfortable with. Elevate your plate has changed my relationship with food. I use to jump from one diet to another, often finding results but ultimately missing my foods and turning back to my old habits. Melody has helped me understand that I can have the food I crave but at the correct portions. She helped me understand how to read food labels, how to search for fiber, and tricks to measure food without a scale or measuring cup. Fast food used to be a staple in my diet, but with Melody's help I have learned to food prep and control my hunger levels. I no longer have intense hunger that drive me to quick unhealthy foods. I'm so appreciative to Melody for helping me with my diet. She did not make me feel guilty for eating so poorly, she asked me about my life, and understood why it was so hard for me to eat healthy. I made excuses for my diet and she found me solutions. I always looked forward to our session, she certainly made me feel like I could take control of my diet. I am happy with my results thus far, I am only a few pounds away from my weight before I was married and had two kids. Happy to be losing the dad bod, but even happier that I never had to feel hunger to get here. I was recently a student in a Personal Wellness class that Melody taught at UCSD. In the class we learned all different kinds of full body at home workouts, which could be done using whatever we had on hand, such as a backpack or textbook. I was thrilled (and surprised at first!) to learn home workouts that were as good as those at the gym. However, working with Melody as my health coach, I learned so much more than home workouts; she also gave us nutrition guidance and stress reduction advice as well. I now feel confident that I have the skills to do a comprehensive at home workout, and know where to find resources online to further that knowledge. She gave advice on what low-cost fitness pieces we could get to further enhance our at home workouts, which was incredibly useful. Melody always started the class in a positive and forward-thinking way, asking about something that went well the past week, and something to work on next week. She was engaging and encouraging in each class - you could truly tell she cared about the progress of each individual. She even remembered small comments I had made earlier on in the class weeks before, and asked about them later on in the quarter. I wanted to start off by saying thank you to Melody for providing me with life changing support and help. Whenever someone talked about seeing a nutritionist or participating in a nutrition class, I would look the other way and pretend I was not being offered this option. I finally decided to give it a try and I do not regret my decision at all. Melody provided me with tons of resources and motivation to reach my goals. One of the things she taught me through my sessions was the MyPlate and food groups. I never realized how easy it could be to meet your goals until i met Melody. Before meeting with Melody, I kid you not I would drink at least 2 cans of Soda with each meal that is about 6 cans of soda which is a ridiculous amount of sugar. Melody was very supportive and understanding. She always made me feel comfortable and she really cared about what I had to share. She was honestly amazing. Even now, she will check in with me just to see how I am doing and to get an update on my goals. Because of everything that she has taught me I have managed to lose weight something I have never done before. I have been able to lose 15 pounds so far and am now more motivated to work out every day. I have talked to out dietitians before but Melody is one of a kind. To her, you are not just a paycheck you are a human being and she cares about you on the personal level and actually cares about helping you change and find happiness.
