Spice of Bengal

Spice of Bengal

My general understanding of the word 'Bengal' is that it is a region in India as well as a type of…read moretiger. Now I'm pretty sure this place doesn't specialise in grilled tiger, so I think it's safe to say their name is a nod to its Indian roots and that there is no need to get on the phone to the RSPCA just yet. Spice of Bengal in Ainsdale specialises in Indian and Bangladeshi dishes available either in a restaurant setting or to order and take away. Their takeaway menu is a bit sparse compared to the restaurant menu which is to be expected, but their eat-in menu is impressively extensive. Helpfully, there is also a section which breaks down what each type of curry contains and how spicy each one is, for all the curry virgins and n00bs amongst you. When I last visited I went for the lamb tikka chilli Bengal curry which, as you can imagine, was rather spicy. Despite how hot it was, it was still delicious as it managed to negotiate the fine line between being too mild and so hot it takes off several layers of your tongue. The restaurant is fairly pleasantly decorated and has a lovely dining atmosphere, with the staff being friendly and attentive at all times. If you're ever in the area, I recommend trying the Spice on offer here.

Wanted to add a bit of spice to my life, so I tried the Spice of Bengal. Being new to indian food,…read moreI found ordering for the first time to be a bit difficult. Fortunately the menu did its best to guide me in the ways of the Spice and helped me to make an excellent choice. The waiter even asked if I wanted my food more, or less, spicy. I was waited on very graciously and I have no complaints at all about the place. Best restaurant I have been to in a few years.

I've had a few lovely evenings at Asha Balti House. The menu…read moreis extensive and the food has always been really nice and well cooked. The staff are very welcoming and friendly and the service has always been excellent. I've also sampled the food as a take-away and it was of the same high-quality as the restaurant. Definitely not to be missed.

We'd finished our hike on the Llanberis path to the top of Snowdon (3100 feet up, then 3100 feet…read moredown) and were pretty hungry. I remembered that our hosts at Tan Dinas Country House in Betws-y-Coed recommended Ty Balti House, so we headed there. Llanrwst is a working town and interesting to us because of our interest in Wales and the Welsh. The town is quite different from Betws-y-Coed, very tourist-oriented, but Llanrewst is interesting in it's own way. Somehow Llanwrst lucked out over Betws and has a fantastic Indian restaurant featuring Balti-style (Bangladeshi) cooking. Their focus is their tandoori oven and meat dishes, including lamb. We're fishaterians though but we found plenty to eat there too. We had tandoori salmon, mattar paneer, dhal and rice. Asha Balti has a full bar. A G&T was never more welcome. The food was excellent (really, not just because we were hungry!), the staff was friendly and helpful. Dinner was one of our best meals during our two week trip to Wales. It's only a few miles to the restaurant from Betws-y-Coed, so head to Llanwrst if you're in the mood for some great Indian food.

Arong is a bit of a strange name for any kind of shop, never mind an Indian takeaway. Maybe if you…read moreput an 's' on the front it'd make more sense. But then it would just sound like some kind of ladies swimwear shop, a bit like the one Toadie and Connor used to run in 'Neighbours'. And it definitely wouldn't be suitable for an Indian takeaway. Arong is yet another takeaway along Waterloo's South Road but unlike many others, it manages to stand out due to the quality of its food. As with most restaurants and takeaways that specialise in Indian cuisine, Arong offers all the usual types of spicy food made to a very high standard, all of which is available to be collected at a later time or delivered to your front door if you're feeling lazy. The prices are a bit steep with certain dishes, but it's definitely worth paying a bit more than you would for a kebab and chips considering the quality. As well as the usual types of curries, Arong also offers "exotic" dishes for those of you who feel a bit more daring. Ones to watch out for are the 'Mongolian Dish' and 'Naga Balti', both of which are full of various interesting flavours whilst maintaining a spicy kick.

If you live in the area or just visiting you need to stop at Arongs' for indian take out. The mongolian dish is a must but dont take my word try it for yourself.
