I bought a Groupon for 4 when seeking out wine and painting. It was a gift for my dad for father's…read moreday. My family ended up using our Groupon on Saturday, Aug 24th at the hopcity tavern and market. Pros: -So many options! Groupon doesn't expire for a while, and there are tons of painting events in the Portland area, especially on weekends. Painting events are commonly in downtown Portland, up north by Vancouver at the Red Lion Hotel, in Hillsboro, and there seems to be a few in Happy Valley and Gresham. Yaymaker seems to be good about catering to people from all around town. -You know what to expect beforehand. They show photos of what you're going to be painting, so you can book the class with the painting that appeals to you. -Our painting expert was knowledgeable, fun, and extremely friendly. She provided a very positive, easy going atmosphere. She played music in between instructions and gave us plenty of time to catch up. She was happy to take photos for us. -The class length is generous: about 2 hours. Everyone at my class seemed to be able to finish. A couple cons: -No complimentary wine. The advertising is misleading. They give a note that "This event requires all attendees must be of legal drinking age". My family and came in expecting to enjoy a glass of wine too, and we thought that we had paid for it (even with the Groupon discount, this class was expensive). I would've booked a class under a different business if I had known there wouldn't be any wine. -Groupon isn't actually cheaper. They have $10 coupons all the time on their website. I wanted to have a bigger group but assumed the best price is when buying for 4 people. I wish I had known, then I possibly would've considered adding more people to my party. Overall, it was a positive experience. I'm just glad I know what to expect now!

I purchased a Groupon for a PaintNite class. I registered for the class (and had to pay a $10…read moreuncharge for the class that the Groupon didn't cover). We showed up for the class and waited 30 minutes after the start time and the teacher never showed up. This was the Portland, Oregon class at the Broadway Grill location. When I emailed PaintNight for a refund, they never apologized and even told me that fees are normally not refundable but they "made an exception" and refunded only my upcharge amount. They also said I had to go through Groupon to get a refund for my voucher (which is another nightmare, but doesn't reflect on PaintNite). I cannot recommend anyone ever register for the Portland, OR class. You might not actually get a class.

My friend and I had a wonderful experience making candles here on a Friday night! There is street…read moreparking but also 2 parking garages nearby within walking distance (and first 2 hours free!) This workshop is small but full of bright colors and farm house vibe with lots of fun projects to do. We were greeted warmly by the friendly staff and this workshop started promptly with detailed instructions to explore 20 different scents and discussion of their categories. Both Zoe and Elizabeth were super helpful in guiding us to choose adjacent or complimentary scents for our candles, and the hardest part was choosing only 2 scents to make your candle! You reserved this experience online but you can also upgrade to a different containers (a tea cup or pumpkin - so cute!) and add extra candles onsite. The candle will need at least an hour to 2 hours to set so we were free to walk around Orenco station and got to snack and catch up while our candles were drying. My friend was able to pick her up that night but mine was not set yet so I had to come back during the weekend. They have so many cool projects to choose from and a good selection of beverages for purchase. I will definitely be back with other friends to try out other projects in the future. Olivia is a kind teacher, a great explainer, and an all-around nice person who made me and my friends feel very welcomed and supported--especially important when you're trying something you've never done before. Having taken several of these sorts of intro classes elsewhere, I'm always a bit disappointed: most classes have you make an object that feels pretty unimpressive or uninteresting. Not so here: the really cute stained-glass star ornament is now a permanent fixture on my window. Amazingly, after one session I also genuinely think that I could make some rudimentary pieces on my own (again, very rare for this sort of class), and that's a testament to how good an explainer Olivia is. I would strongly recommend the one-session class as a fun date-night or small-group activity.
