He uses a blend of techniques including deep tissue work, Swedish massage, heat (he makes use of hot towels in a way that feels utterly therapeutic), natural balms, reflexology, aromatherapy, and breathing exercises. He helps you breathe into difficult spots and helps you relax completely. On his website he says that his goals are to relieve pain, decrease inflammation, relax the nervous system, and increase mobility, circulation, and breathing. He does all these things 100% and then some. His services are totally affordable. He works with athletes, pregnant women, elderly folk, and anyone just needing a massage. I didn't really have any health complaints, but I like getting massages: it is one hour where I can just let my thoughts drift and have someone else take care of me. Like many people, I associate massage with relaxation and spa-like surrounding. The stereo-typical massage therapist is dressed in some white clothes and oozes sensuality and well-being. Corey and his practice is different; different in good way though. When I arrived for my appointment, I was greeted by a what I associated with a typical San Franciscan, dressed in a plaid shirt and a big commuter rucksack; he probably had just biked to his practice. He then told me a little bit about what I'd be expecting over the next hour, before I got ready for the actual massage. I then expected him to start "massaging" my body, but instead I witnessed how his hands applied light pressure on my back. While doing so, he commented on areas that he thought were a bit tight and/or needed some attention. After that, I pretty much let him do "his thing". I had complete trust in him...in fact, I apparently fell asleep at various times during the session. (Corey said something along the lines of: "I noticed that when I'd just relieved the tension on various sections of your body, I noticed you started to snore lightly...") After the session, Corey walked me through what he'd done and he pointed to various muscles on the anatomy chart on the wall next to the massage table. I can only agree with all the other Yelpers, especially Kevin N, who says: "Corey is an intellectual who combines his academic knowledge of anatomy and kinesiology with his natural gift of tactile memory." I also liked that Corey didn't do the guilt trip on me that I associate with some other massage therapists. Something like: "Oh, your body is really tense and I think we should see each other on a regular basis. In other words: your body is a total mess and I can help you fix it." Corey simply said that it would probably be good for me to come back for another session and work on some other areas, but that in general I'm in pretty good shape. I have found his practice to be not only soothing and corrective, but also quite enlightening and I've learned a lot about how my body's systems interact with each other . I regularly end up getting an extra 10 or 15 minutes of work done, because he wants to be sure everything is balanced and aligned , and at no point have I ever felt like he was rushing to get me out the door. I should also say that on the artication I have needed to reschedule he's been gracious and accommodating , in addition to this , on at least two occasions he was willing to reschedule on very short notice! I can no longer recommend Eligio…read more As someone substantially disabled in a car accident just before Covid and with long covid I had decided to stay with Eligio as a provider even tho things weren't always smooth because for a time i thought it would be hard to find someone new. That's my bad. In the last year however Eligio's work, manner and ability to keep agreements has substantially declined even with consistent communication including phone, texts and in person communication that included several rounds of agreement making. Before this last year the issues were: he always pulled my hair when he worked on my head and neck and made a joke about the "hair pulling part of the session." Which is not just not funny, he knows he's hurting me but never upped his skills to stop. For years. That actually should have been enough to stop working with him. He'd be casually late for quite awhile until i insisted he notify me before the start of our session time. He never learned to calibrate to my needs had to constantly be reminded to not push too hard on my feet and back and not tork/tear my knees when raising my legs. This should have been a deal breaker given how long it went on. We did out calls to my home and he had to be reminded of basically everything including putting the toilet seat down in our bathroom. (I'm disabled and bending over is hard. I literally asked him 12 times to put it down before he remembered once on his own.) people are imperfect and I try to be forgiving and communicative. He did not put the room back in order after use. He moved all kinds of things and frequently did nothing to clean up post session. Annoying but not a deal breaker. Like I said he's just not paying attention. Over the past year several things have happened that made us decide that we cannot work with him any more. Eligio injured my back. Repeatedly He has always required feedback to keep him from using too much pressure or not torking my knees. But in the last year he made things demonstrably worse many, many times. And generally took no responsibility for that impact . Now I realize that's because he's just not able to attune to sensitive needs unless constantly directed. In other words: his sessions are not relaxing because he has a tendency to accidentally and repeatedly injure me. At least a third of the sessions for the last year he hurt me and I had significantly more pain when standing after a session. If I fall asleep in a session, he reliably injures my back. Every time. When I woke up in pain and asked him to fix it, he charged for that time having never mentioned it to me or asked for consent or created clarification. Which is code for he: he hurt me and overcharged me and then was pissed when I asked him about it. His response? He's short on cash and he worked over the session time. I talked to him and put my feedback in writing to him. We made new agreements that included getting consent for additional fees in the moment and stopping sessions if I fall asleep. His major concern of stopping a session if I fall asleep was "will I get paid?" Given that we paid on time every time, that was wild And utterly self serving. The final deal breaker was weaponizing my diagnosis against me instead of taking ownership of his decisions. He is someone who has a hard time taking responsibility for his impact. I cannot recommend him. Especially if you have pain.
