My best part of being at Eye Elegant Glasses was that the beautiful lady, attendant stayed by my side at all times. She gave me complete individual attention as I put my contacts on. I have never before experienced a business so intent on *NOT* making a sale. I was visiting Newark on business. I wanted to get into Manhattan to shop for frames, but it wasn't practical. Someone on the street in Newark complimented me on my Tom Ford frames, so I asked him where I could get designer frames in Newark. He knew the owner of Elegant Eyes and directed me there. I went there immediately--only to discover that they're closed on Wednesdays. Who closes on Wednesdays?! I was flying out on Thursday afternoon, but I set my clock to get up at 9am EST (6am for my body clock), so I could get to Elegant Eyes when they opened. When I arrived, I said I wanted to look at frames. But I was confronted with a barrage of questions. Do you have a prescription? Who is your doctor? When was your last exam? Etc. I replied, "I'm visiting, and I simply want to look at frames. If I see something I like, I'll buy them and have the prescription filled in Los Angeles." This was treated like a foreign concept, and I was presented with a form to fill out. I said, "I HAVE TO FILL OUT A FORM, JUST TO LOOK AT FRAMES?" "Yes." I was flabbergasted. And annoyed. I begrudgingly filled out the form. The employee took the form to the back of the store and showed it to another person. They both looked at me occasionally while I stood there. After about 3 minutes, she came back to me and said, "OK. Please have a seat, and someone will be with you shortly." I replied, "I don't want to have a seat. I simply want to look at frames! Why is this so difficult?" "Well we offer one-on-one consultations, and someone will be with you shortly." I said, "I don't want or need a consultation. I know what I like. I just want to look at the frames you offer, and if I see something I like, I'll buy it." "Well, we don't work that way." I thought about it for a moment, and then I said, "You know what? Forget it. I'm here to BUY something, and this process is ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS." I turned around and left the store. Like I said, I have never before experienced a business so intent on *NOT* making a sale. I called seeking assistance due to torn contact lens and needed a single set disposable to purchase since I work in Newark and need to drive home safely. I called and spoke with Denise who cut me off (should have known at that point where this would go) who stated she needed script emailed to her first. I hung up called my eye doctor and promptly sent it to her. Denise called me back stated she was the office mgr then proceeded to lecture me about not carrying my glasses or set of contacts as back up not only was this rude but very condescending. She then stated I would need purchase contacts in box set as they only give their patients single sets and I was not a patron. Rude as hell and I will never go or refer anyone to them. Denise sounds like she has been there for years making everyone miserable. You loss not mine I'll keep going to my wonderful eye doctor who treats ppl with respect and kindness. read more

ok so, If I could give 0 stars, i would! I have been going to this place for over 13 years and payed for the overpriced glasses because it was a local black owned business, however I hate feeling like I have been duped while spending my hard earned money and that is exactly how I felt with this last purchase. I hate for a business tell you that you are getting something when in fact you are not!! The lenses I got in this last pair of glasses is straight trash so before I came to give a review on yelp I called and explained to them that the glasses that suppose to be anti-glare and anti-smudge is doing exactly that, I am constantly wiping theses lenses which I a sure will have to be changed again from all the wiping. Then the lady get on the phone and further insult my intelligence by asking do I know what I purchased, how are they being smudged if they are constantly on your eyes....as a person who has been wearing glasses all my life, I can not remember once when I kept my glasses on ALL DAMN DAY!! you rub your eyes during the day, you take them off when splashing cold water on your face... just ridiculousness...then chose to tell me, Oh you can leave a review or come in and we will give you the Ultimate anti smudge for an extra $50 but that cost will be waived to you....Well guess what, that waived fee is what I should have gotten in the first place that I promised with my purchased...You definitely lost a good loyal customer whom spent a great deal of money with you!!!! I made the mistake of signing up for the vision insurance plan with Newark Public Schools that is an exclusive contract with Elegant Eyes. I visited their Newark location on Saturday morning for my covered exam and glasses. The exam was cursory, dilation of my pupils wasn't even mentioned. When I approached the counter to pick frames, the worker pulled from under the counter two trays of the ugliest frames I have ever seen, and said these were the only ones covered by my insurance. When I questioned this, she said I could pick from the others on display, and the insurance would take $50 off the full price. I'm pretty sure my insurance benefit for frames was $120. Am going home to check my paperwork on this. But overall horrible service and maybe trying to get over by not properly honoring their contract. read more

The optician, Utenzi Miller, is the ONLY reason I stayed! I had an issue on a day she wasn't there-I was overcharged. I came back to get a refund a she settled the issue with such great customer service. At first I was annoyed because I really needed my contacts and I was constantly having headaches. I could sense she understood my frustration. She not only refunded me the difference from being overcharged but she gave me trial contacts until my order came in. I couldn't stop thanking her. I came in frustrated but left extremely happy! Businesses tend to treat people in poor neighborhoods with lesser standards but not Utenzi. She really tried her best and succeeded with making sure I had what I needed. I really only want to deal with her moving forward. Lol I'm calling ahead anytime I need to order more contacts to make sure she's at work. I'll legit wait a week if she goes on vacation or something because i know she'll get it right. Well this place doesn't deserve any stars to begin with. I had an incident at the Newark location where Denise was quite rude after realizing she was dealing with someone who wasn't stupid and knew the law. Instead of listening and learning something new, Denise decided to be disrespectful and dismissing me and my problem. So in an effort to give the company a fair chance, and not judge them by one awful employee, I wrote an email on the company website. I was contacted by a Ms. Utensil or something similar and she was by far disgusting!! For starters, when she called, she hadn't taken the time out to fully read or understand the email. When I tried to explain to her my initial problem of them not obeying the set laws she continually cut me off. She proceeded to tell me about certain laws that they abide. When asked where can I find this law, she had no clue. lol it's really sad honestly. She told me to google it and I never found this so called law she was referring to. She never once addressed or apologized for Denise's crappy customer service.. If you had a problem with them or if they are refusing to give you your prescription after an exam Please contact the FTC and file a complaint also follow up with another complaint to the Nj Attorney General of Consumers read more

The staff are extremely professional and patient with their clients. The owners even stayed open late for me so I could pick up my glasses. I initially went to the facility for an eye exam and ended up purchasing two pairs of glasses. Teresa helped me with picking out two WONDERFUL frames and even introduced me to two deals (i.e. 20% off total if purchasing two glasses and the "get now pay later" promotion). I would recommend anyone seeking an eye exam or new frames (eyeglasses or sunglasses) to this facility. They have VERY STYLISH eyewear. I've been receiving compliments on my two pair daily. I purchased glasses there , I went for my yearly eye exam, as the dr was checking my eyes with the glasses on he stated my vision changed drastically after only one year. He looked through my glasses and said the lenses were defective, after contacting Elegant Eyes I was told that I must have left the glasses in heat( the glasses were in the case at all times)I was given a hard time trying to get replacement lenses until I threatened to contact my vision plan. My experience here Monday was absolutely horrible. The first instance that bothered me greatly was the receptionist charged me 35.00 instead of 30.00. When she noticed , AFTER SWIPING MY CARD, she giggles and says " I'm sorry I'm just so used to people paying 35.00 for the class tact Lens exam" she reasoned my debit card to apparently return the money. And then swipes it again for the copay. Needless to say I have TWO charges to my account. It's been two days and I still haven't been refunded my money. The doctor was emotionless when she did my fake exam. She didn't check eye pressure or anything. I don't know what type of exam she gave. So of-course she recommended glasses. The frame options were HORRIBLE AND. The designer I was looking for the sales rep said " yea that's for kids" . Ugh very unprofessional to say in the least!!!! read more

I am writing to share the negative experience I had at Elegant Eyes on Main Street in East Orange, NJ. I spent $500 on some FaceaFace frames for my mother and was treated horrible by the owner...an overweight, light-skinned, black man. He was rude, condescending, and aggressive with me bc of a mix up regarding the time for pick up the glasses. I initially worked with a female for selection and purchase of the glasses...she was accommodating, patient, and professional. Surprisingly, the owner is nothing like his worker. I write this review with pleasure. Elegant Eyes in Newark is sub par service in my opinion. Although they have recently done nicer cosmetic renovations, more should be done with customer service. The wait time is a little too long honestly - for us folks who come on our lunch break, with an appointment. Truthfully all I would like to do is get my prescription and go else where... one reason is there is no parking so I walk there while at work. After my exam, the staff behind the eyeglass counter approached me with a rebate offer. I was told the instructions regarding the rebate and after a month or two I decided to go with it. I paid the full price of + 200$ to Elegant Eyes and processed my rebate but I never received the rebate, instead I was declined by the manufacturer, an elegant eyes apology and 2 promo boxes of contact lenses. Certainly not comparable when the rebate was 100$. Turns out, the deadline (printed 12/2017) for the rebate was not the real deadline. Elegant Eyes staff said they were unaware. Oh Ok... I'll do my best to go somewhere else - even if I have to pay more. You lost one Elegant Eyes, do better. read more

Customer service here and East Orange with "Mr. Miller" as the lady called him was terrible. I went in last week (Friday) and the people didn't even greet me )in the back, only buying frames no exam). I waited for the lady "Denise" to have a 10 minute convo while waiting (standing in her face and didn't even sit down). I don't know what is up with people and customer service but this is exactly why, I DON'T SUPPORT MY OWN. -E.O.? Miller, you know what you did. You never have to worry about me spending another 1k with you again. Your customer service skills are terrible. Not just with me but everyone who walked in the door. This is why you have to charge 1.1k for designer glasses vs selling for a better price. It takes money and WORLD CLASS CUSTOMER SERVICE to run a booming business (trust I know, you have my name). I went to get new glasses and new lenses. I was checked out and had to ask for a prescription. A few days later they called me to pick it up. I could not see out of my lenses. They had the wrong prescription. The doctor looked at my prescription that they had (not my copy prescription) He told me that someone wrote down the wrong axis number for my lenses. So I had to go and come back the following week to pick up the CORRECT lens with the correct axis number. After I received my glasses and it was good, I ordered another pair online from a different company. Based on the prescription given to me by the eye doctor i ordered the glasses. They turned out to be the wrong prescription AGAIN . They gave me the wrong cylinders for my right and left eye. they wrote 1.00 and 1.75 for my cylinder. I went back and they made it -1.00 and -1.75. They said I should have called them when I saw i couldnt enter 1.00 and 1.75 instead of adding a plus. So they gave me the wrong prescription and are denying that they messed up. So now I have to reorder my lenses and pay again because she is saying it is my fault. I told her to cut me a check for the lenses or for them to do it for free. And she said if i had an issue when ordering (which i didnt) I should have called them. My issue is i went there and they fixed my prescription that they had for their files for my axis.. and also messed up with my cylinder. And the doctor saw my copy of the prescription twice and did not notice the mistake. So now I wasted money and have to waste more since they gave me the WRONG PRESCRIPTION. read more

This woman was very friendly, asked for the insurance information, and when I told her I wanted a similar style of glasses, she showed me a variety of options. After picking out a pair (I was unsure for a while and the woman offered several colors), she explained the cost breakdown and I should expect to receive them. The whole process took me a half hour. Most reputable optometrist will allow you to pick out frames and then PLACE an ORDER for the exact frames you picked. At Elegant Eyes, you get the sample frame. the frames that everyone and their momma tried on hence, the reason why every last pair of glasses i've purchased from them has broke! My last trip back there for repairs, i was told that because they frames were "out dated" weren't recent years frames, that they could not be fixed because the manufacturer wouldn't have the parts. So, you're selling USED frames and because they are SO OLD, you can't get a decent repair! UNACCEPTABLE! Will entertain you when you are looking for new frames and money to spend, but if it's a warranty issue or back job will just totally disregard you. Paid a lot of money for four frames Celine, dsquared, Tom ford, and a Gucci. And after warranty expired the dsquared tip on the arm fell off so I asked what we could do, held the frames for more than 4 days and told me that the company doesn't sell parts so I have to spend another 372.00 for a new frame, mind you that's with the "discount" already. So ended up just picking up the old frame and will try to fix it myself. And when I got the frame back the piece that came loose is gone and they said they never saw it. My sister and I went to the Newark, NJ location, we both received eye exams by two separate physicians. My exam went smoothly and I had already picked out frames and made my deposit. My sister was dissatisfied with the physician who performed her exam. She felt the exam was inadequet and rushed, she felt the physician did not listen to her needs, or concerns. When we requested a second exam which is will within her rights as a patient, we were immediately told that she could not receive a second exam today and she would have to wait for the head physician to come in one day during the week for a second exam. When advised that she had just started a new job and was unable to take off during the week, the office managet told us oh well, you need to prioritize and make sacrifices. We requested again to have a second exam done, at this time the Head Physician "Magically Appeared" and denied the request for a second exam. My sister had been without glasses for abt two week prior to coming in for the exam, and understanding that they wanted her to see a specialist, did not negate the fact that she needed glasses at that moment until she could accrue some time with her new position in order to take off work. Needless to say, your office manager was extremely rude, unprofessional, and disrespectful. At one point as we are trying to gain clairification on the matter, telling us I dont have time to go back and forth with you, the answer is no, now please leave! I work for a healthcare provider and a patient mistreat is not something that should be tolerated. We came to patrionize This company because we have several friends who have come in and received what was described as good service, I also got my son a pair of glasses from there several months ago. I made a call today to your East Orange office to get my perscription filled there, and was again met by a ruse individual who instead of trying to resolve the issue and help us move forward with a positive business relationship, told me to go patrionize another business because I was unhappy with the service that I received, and it is the same office manager at both locations. I find that hard to beliece that 1 person can be in two places at the same time. So again, rude, condescending, disrespectful customer service.
