I called the owner before writing this review. I told them that I would write the amount I was charged and put before and after pictures up. They offered to give me product or services to make it right but changed their minds when I showed up. I'm not doing this because I'm mad. It's just money. I'm writing this so people will know what to expect. I work hard for my money and spending 4 hours trusting someone else with how you will look is a BIG deal. Called Sylvia after a friend failed to get rid of the Orange she had lifted me to. I walked in looking bad! I left looking better... But damaged and very orange. My specific words were... "I don't care about a specific look... I trust your experience, just make me look good and make my hair healthy" I will let you make your own decision about the salon. But this was my experience. The cost... $45 for each application of color... $45 lifted me to a light orange color.... $45 of bleach plus $90 because it was a weaved method. (That's $135 for a weave of the bleach alone) 3 customers were given cuts and color while I waited. Doesn't bother me but it's not like she wasnt making money with the time I spent processing. Stylist made me feel attended to. Brought me coffee and water. Very nice people. The color came out orange with very light bleached weave... Then $45 for the toner.... Which still left me with orange roots and weave. I was given a cut... I asked to be left with healthy hair no matter the length. I just wanted all the dead ends to be gone. Got home and couldn't run my fingers an inch without feeling like I was in straw. When I brushed my hair the following morning. Tons of little hairs were flying in the air from breaking off of my ends. So ugly! Even with perfect color dead ends like this would make you rage if you realized you paid $225 for it! But the color wasn't perfect.... Not even close. I left the color and length up to her and she picked this. Side note: Was told I should buy product while I was there. In fact both Sylvia and her assistant encouraged it the whole time. So when I was done I picked the least expensive of their suggestions and went to the counter.... That's when I found out that my new hairstyle. Orangey with light highlights and split ends would cost me $225. I told them I couldn't afford the product. I still tipped because I wanted to see how it looked the next day. Since you never know. I feel like I need to cut 3 inches off and should just get a dark brown box dye for $10. Make your own choice. I didnt want to write this without letting the salon know my feelings. She offered to tint me but when I said I was scared to add more product to my damaged hair she said she would give me product to make up for it. Got there an hour later and she didn't want to give me anything. I shook her hand and now I warning you. Do what you want... If $225 isn't a lot of money to you, then cool. Just know I called and let them know how I felt about my personal result and they don't care. read more

Johnny did an amazing job giving me the haircut I wanted. I have curly hair and wanted layers. He did exactly what I wanted which no other hairstylist has accomplish. I've never had a hair cut as detail as this one. He really took the time to make sure how short I wanted it and also let me really look at my hair to make sure I liked it. He works magic with the , and was very comfortable with them which I haven't felt from a hairstylist in a while. The best cut Ive had in my life, and he also flat iron my hair to make sure if was even if I ever straightened my hair. Finally found the right person to trust with my hair! read more

I took to Yelp to find a new hairstylist and I am so happy I trusted it! I had to cancel the first appointment I made because of a conflict in my schedule and she was completely cool about it and booked me for the next day. Sylivia and her neice (I can't remember her name) did my hair today. I got a brazilian blow out and a hair cut plus shampoo and a masq for a GREAT price. Really couldn't be beat and my hair looks AMAZING! No more frizz and it brightened up my color! They are so nice and funny! Came here for a bang trim and was extremely disappointed with the result. I've had side bang trims in LA at high-end salons, so I have a general idea of what side bang trims are supposed to look like. I was under the impression that the person who cut my side bangs at Elegant Cuts didn't really know what she was doing, as my side bangs came out messed up and not like the photo I showed her. I just moved to the area and have tried everything from the chain hair styling locations to the small local places. And this is the first hair salon that actually gave me the hair cut I wanted. No walking out of the salon telling myself that it doesn't look that bad. I had Sylvia cut my hair and she is awesome. I walked in at lunch time and she put me in a chair right as I walked in. She works fast, but is super percise. And does so all while carrying on a conversation with you. I went in not really being able to describe what I wanted, but she went to work and gave me the haircut I was looking for. She is good. As for the price, I thought it was reasonable. No it isn't a $6 barbershop haircut, but you dont walk out of there with something that looks like a $6 haircut. For my haircut it was $20, which included the cut, shampoo and styling. Also at the end she massages your neck and head which is an awesome way to cap off a haircut. I really do not think the price is bad considering she did so much more than just use a pair of clippers to run over my head. She used only scissors to style my hair and only used the clippers to clean up my neck and side burns. After the cut she washed my hair, double checked her work and styled my hair showing me a different style to try. It was a very clean, well kept salon. And everyone there were very nice and professional. Will definitely be going back. read more

Let me start with I have never had anyone except my mother who has been a hairdresser for 40 years cut my hair so letting someone else do my hair was extremely hard to do. I am so glad that I trusted Sylvia to do the job! She was amazing and cut my hair exactly like the picture I showed her! I was amazed at her techniques and how friendly she was. After lots of research on Yelp, I settled on Elegant Cuts. Boy, am I glad I did. Sylvia has over 2 decades of experience -- and it shows. She cuts hair like she loves what she's doing, and she really seems to care about her clients. I couldn't believe how great my hair looked after she cut and styled it. Afterwards, everyone told me they'd never seen my hair look so good. (I'm letting my hair go gray, so having a terrific cut is an absolute MUST.) Sylvia was great! I needed a new stylist due to my old one relocating. I have super curly frizzy hair and she did wonders with my neglected split ends. She also took the time to straighten and double check to make sure things were even. I just feel so terrible that I didn't take enough cash to give a good tip. Sylvia is nice, but they are a bit too pricey for the services they do. Be very careful when getting haircuts and other services and make sure you agree on a price BEFORE you get the work done. She's good at color and has lots of experience. Careful with the prices though. read more

BEWARE - I went to get my hair colored here and this is not the place to go. The first time I went I showed her a picture and I asked her if she could do it. She said yes, so okay she did her work. When it was finished my hair looked lighter but not like the picture. But okay I paid went home started to put my hair up and looked at the highlights they looked grown out, 2 inches from my scalp very blunt and my hair looked the same the only difference was that it was lighter underneath. So I called her after the weekend, asked her if I can come in to fix it she said yes. Went again I showed her the picture on more time and she said "okay I didn't go as light the first time because I thought you didn't want it that light." She ASSUMED basically. So she put more color in, fixed the grown out looking highlights. And still doesn't look like what I asked. And yes I had to PAY AGAIN. for her wrong assumption of not wanting to go as light and it's not what I even wanted. In total I PAID WAY TO MUCH for the service I got and I shouldn't have to pay again they should stand behind their service. Never going back read more

This is my first time here at Elegant Cuts. I found this salon on Yelp and went with Sylvia because of her great reviews. She is very personable and knowledgable in what she does. She stated she's been doing hair for many many years as still loves it,...it's her passion. She just had knee surgery 3 weeks ago and let me just say, this woman doesn't let it slow her down. Sylvia does a great color and cut job, but has charged me More than what she originally quotes me. Has happened 3 times and this last time was almost TWICE what she originally said. For such high prices, you can go to a full salon. This place is loud and does not offer a relaxing ambiance at all. And the shampoos are more painful than enjoyable. Very rushed, staffing talking loudly; and not relaxing at all!! But jacking up the prices right before you pay... Will probably not return because of this. Also, beware: staff are Always pushing their " products " on you. For the price, find a salon you can relax at. read more

I recently went to this Salon. I called first to ask about color and eyebrows arched. Yes and I asked about prices $45 to $55 for color, depending on application needed, and $20 for arch eyebrows. When finished I was told $100, $55 for color(I only had the gray covered) and $45 for a hair cut( I only had a trim). I travel quite a bit and I have NEVER paid $45 for a haircut! The max I have paid at other salons is $70 for color, cut, and eyebrows arched. I will not go back and do not recommend this salon to anyone. It is PRICEY and the rates are not reasonable. read more

I just moved to the Area and as a woman, finding a new hair stylist is a very scary prospect!!! I am still looking for the perfect nail place after being here 8 weeks already! I came to Sylvia because of the Yelp reviews. I told her my hesitation in finding a new person and she was SO confident in her work, that she put me at ease immediately. Sometimes when you seem nervous, the stylist lack confidence which makes things worse but that was NOT the case with Sylvia!!! She gave me a cute cut and the last time I came I brought a picture as to the color I would like my hair to be and you would think living in Los Angeles the last 20 years, I would have gotten low lights before but never did.... until Sylvia! She gave me low lights and then a color and it is beautiful and the cut looks great. This last time, her sister Mary was there to help and she was very sweet. Sylvia even taught me some easy recipes with Nopales! She will be my go to stylist for a long time to come! read more

Just moved to Oxnard, so I had to find a new hairdresser. Went to Elegant Cuts a week ago based on the mostly great ratings it got on Yelp. Sylvia was very sweet, friendly and professional. When I told her I had Japanese straightening on my hair - but that I wished there was something else I could do with this naturally curly, frizzy, dry, thick hair, she suggested a Brazilian Blowout. I had had one before, but it hadn't worked - Once I washed my hair, it had reverted to its old self. Sylvia explained that perhaps the person who had done it before hadn't really had enough experience with the method. Washed my hair this morning and it's still straight. (Yay!) The BB was pretty painless quick. (and does save money! compared to the Japanese straightening.) - although, it's not permanent straightening and has to be repeated about every 3 months. The color is lovely, and she used a semi-permanent color that doesn't contain ammonia. I do like the color better than the one I had before, although after washing it once I can see that it doesn't cover my grey roots as well because it's lighter. (I'm reserving judgment on that one until I've lived with it a little longer, which is why I gave a 4 instead of 5.) Sylvia's niece, Myra, assisted her, and she's a sweetheart and did a nice job. All in all, I am very happy with my experience. Okay - One month later - I was back in to get my roots done today. I had noticed, as I mentioned before, that the color wasn't covering my gray. When I went in today and told Silvia about it she was great. She didn't get defensive at all. She said she had a new product that she thought would be much better and so we tried that. The color came out gorgeous and it covered my gray better than any other color has before! Both she and her niece, Myra, worked tirelessly on it (I have very long, thick hair - so it's a big job!) So I've updated my review to 5 stars. Great experience. read more

I tried this place out for the first time today just based on the Yelp reviews. I initially went for cut and color but soon after talking with Sylvia about my hair type, decided the Brazilian Blowout was a good idea. Sylvia and her sister Mary were loads of fun. I laughed almost the entire time I was there because their sister chemistry is a riot. They made me feel like an honorary sister while I was there. Sylvia is very maticulous, checking her work over and over. Not one time was I left sitting under a heater or in the chair waiting for her as I have usually experienced in other salons. Sylvia's sister Mary is a great spirit in the salon. She assisted Sylvia but treated the job as if she was soley responsible. From the consultation, shampoo and condition, many hours for the Brazilian Blowout, to the finished product, not only were these ladies fun, but professional and the techniques Sylvia uses are incredible. Sylvia always attends classes to make sure she is educated and I appreciated that. Give Elegant Cuts a try! I am happy I did and will be coming back for sure! read more

This was one of the worst places I've ever gone. I recently moved to the area so when I saw that this place had great reviews I tried it out. I went in to get my hair dyed and cut but instead I got my hair turned grey and purple along with it getting so fried I had to cut four inches off. I showed Sylvia what I wanted done to my hair but she didn't do anything I wanted. I ended up having to drive two hours back home to my old stylist so I could get my hair fixed. Worst experience I have ever had, and she charged me way more than she said she was going to. read more

This was my first time going to Elegant Cuts. It has been a little over a month since I have been there. The reason I took so long to write a review was because I am sure that many of you ladies and gentlemen know your hair looks great for a couple weeks with the color and maybe the cut. I know for me this has been my experience the last 4 times I have gotten my hair done. Like I said it has been over a month now and I LOVE LOVE LOVE my hair. It is so easy to take care of which is a BIG thing for me. Sylvia did a weave all over because I wanted some light blond through it and then she did this AWESOME blond color she mixed two colors I believe. She let me pick the colors that she thought would look good. Usually when I have gotten my hair done they have picked the color. I then asked her about a Brazilian Blowout and how much it would cost and I could NOT turn down the price. Let me tell you I never new ALL of the work that goes into doing one of those. Let's put it this way they put the product in then they blow-dry,straighten it, then they have to go and wash it all out and do the whole process all over again. Sylvia let me read her book that she was reading which I thought was pretty cool of her and Myra the girl that helped her was so awesome I just LOVED her personality! They even went over and bought me an iced tea! The results were just great and I have FINALY found my hairdresser. Thank-you Sylvia and Myra for making this such a great experience for me.
