Sacramento International Airport - SMF - Terminal B's tree root chandelier

    Sacramento International Airport - SMF

    (1.9k reviews)

You really learn whether an airport works when it becomes your home airport…read more I live in Folsom and have flown through Sacramento International Airport more times than I can count. At this point, I don't really judge SMF by whether it looks impressive. I judge it by a much simpler question: does it make traveling easier or harder? For the most part, SMF makes it easier. It's about a 45-50 minute drive from Folsom for me, so I wouldn't exactly call it close, but once I get there, the airport itself is usually pretty straightforward. It's big enough to offer a good range of flights without feeling like one of those enormous airports where simply finding your terminal becomes part of the journey. Southwest plays a huge role here, and as someone who flies Southwest pretty often, that makes SMF especially convenient. There are usually plenty of options and a good number of nonstop routes, which is a real advantage for people living in Sacramento and the surrounding county. I've used both Terminal A and Terminal B many times, and I definitely find Terminal A a little more convenient when arriving. You can get from the gate toward baggage claim and the parking area fairly quickly. Terminal B adds one extra step because you have to take the automated train between the concourse and the main terminal. It's not a big deal, and the ride itself is short, but when you've just gotten off a long flight and want to get home, you definitely notice the difference. Terminal B does have more personality, though. The giant red rabbit hanging over the terminal is one of those wonderfully strange pieces of airport art that you eventually start associating with coming home to Sacramento. It gives the airport some character instead of making it feel like another completely generic terminal. My biggest recurring complaint is baggage claim. I've had more than a few trips where I've waited 30 minutes or longer for my suitcase. That can get frustrating, especially late at night. At the same time, I know baggage handling involves the airlines and ground crews too, so I wouldn't necessarily blame the airport itself for every long wait. Staff-wise, my experiences have generally been good. People are usually polite, helpful, and willing to point you in the right direction when you need something. The airport is also fairly easy to understand. Signage is clear, getting between parking, the terminals, and ground transportation is pretty intuitive, and I rarely feel stressed trying to figure out where I'm supposed to go. And that may actually be SMF's biggest strength. It isn't trying to be LAX, SFO, or some massive international hub, and I don't think it needs to be. It's a practical, relatively low-stress airport that serves the Sacramento region well. You can get in, get where you need to go, and most of the time get on with your trip without the airport itself becoming the problem. I also like seeing the airport continue to grow. Sacramento has changed a lot, and SMF is clearly growing along with the region. After traveling through much larger and more complicated airports, I've come to appreciate having SMF as my home airport more than I probably used to. It's not perfect. The baggage wait can test your patience, and Terminal B takes a few extra minutes because of the train. But overall, it's convenient, easy to navigate, well connected, and much less stressful than many major-city airports I've traveled through. For a home airport, that counts for a lot.

I really love having a Costco in my neighborhood…read more Saves so much time from having to shop at locations across town. Though I wish they had a gas station. It is super busy on weekends though. Best time to shop if you can is early on weekdays. They have a huge parking lot though it can be a bit of a mess to get out of sometimes. I'm a big fan of the sweet treats at the food court-especially the sundaes. The employees are generally pretty nice here even though they are always super busy.

Is there a better food deal on this earth than the $1.50 Hot Dog Combo at the Costco Food Court?…read more If there is,I've never found it. So many trips to Costco have ended with an inexpensive yet quite filling hot dog in hand. I lather that thing up with mustard and drown it in onions-truly a little moment in heaven....and did I mention it's only $1.50. The Pepperoni Slice at $1.99 is a close second. Costco pizza when served hot off the presses, always hits the spot. On those very special Costco trips,I would do both the Hot Dog Combo and a slice of the Pepperoni-an overwhelmingly filling meal for less than $3.50-got to love it. The food court at this location on weekends or Friday nights can be so hectic-super busy. They have many tables and chairs in the food court where you can find a spot to enjoy your food but it's kind of madness. During the week,on those weekday visits to Costco, the food court is much more manageable and the service is lightning quick. A recent thing I've been really enjoying at the Costco Food Court is their offerings of creative sundaes that they have had for $2.99 or less depending on the toppings. I've really enjoyed the Strawberry Shortcake Sundae and the now discontinued Caramel Brownie Sundae-both were excellent. In closing, I truly believe that no trip to Costco is complete without a visit to the Costco Food Court-I couldn't recommend it highly enough.

Adj: very nice aquatic center for the community…read more We aren't close by here, so we've not been here but a few times, but we do like this aquatic center which is much more than a regular rec pool and much nicer than most city aquatic centers. It actually reminds me of Sunsplash, but not as fancy, understandably. Still, my kids and their friends have a great time here every time we come and swim and play, no matter that there's "only" a huge rec pool and 2 slides and a kiddie splash play structure, plus a lap pool that's not open for rec swim time. Still very fun all the same. Being end of the summer season, it was pretty empty on the day we came and we almost have the whole place to ourselves! With only a couple of weekends left that this place is open until next summer, I'm glad we decided to have fun here one last time. The pool is super clean (see pics), and lots of seating bc so few people are here, so all empty lounging chairs and "Roman" awning/tents. Plenty of picnic tables too, with umbrellas for shade. Overall, we really like this aquatic complex, I'm very thankful that the City of Sacramento built this nicer and still very new because it's really well-kept and maintained. It's great for the community and especially for kids and young adults!

They really enjoyed it. More people came as the day continued. There's lot of lifeguards and they pay close attention so it's good, but of course everyone should watch their kids also. The bathrooms were surprisingly clean, with stalls for changing and rinsing off too. The bathroom was in good shape and well maintained clean. There are plenty of in the sun lounging chairs as well as some under tents. There's the water slides as mentioned, as well as a big kids water features play structure. Of course, there's also a big rec pool that could hold a lot of people so everyone can spread out and swim. All in all, a pretty nice aquatic complex for recreational swim and for those who swim for exercise they also have a lap pool. Hours vary, always check the website and call to confirm.

While we typically rely on a family friend for electrical work, his current unavailability forced us to look for a local professional. After reaching out to several businesses well past midnight, Gene was the only one to provide an immediate response. His promptness and willingness to engage outside of standard business hours were incredibly impressive. Despite my own scheduling challenges and a delay in my communication the following day, Gene remained remarkably patient and professional. Once we connected, he was able to accommodate an appointment quickly. Upon arrival, Gene was thorough and efficient. He systematically troubleshot the electrical panels and exterior AC connections. When the initial tests didn't reveal the source of the problem, he went above and beyond by inspecting the furnace in the attic. While I initially feared the issue might require a separate HVAC specialist, Gene identified and resolved the root cause himself. He took the time to explain the technical details, ensuring I understood the work being performed. It is rare to find a technician who is as honest as they are skilled. Gene is a true professional who clearly takes pride in his work and treats his clients with genuine care. I highly recommend Gene and Plug Electric to anyone seeking an experienced, trustworthy, and responsive electrician. I will certainly be referring him to my own network in the future.

When going to the Sacramento airport, I usually travel out of Terminal B with Southwest Airlines. Flying with United Airlines out of Terminal A this time was a nice change-up from the usual, typical routine. PROS: * Variety of dining options available - Starbucks (1st + 2nd level), Magpie Café, Sidewalk Juice, Vino Volo, New Helvetia, West Coast Sourdough, Wendy's, Taylors Market, Centro Cocina Mexicana, and Escape Lounges * Ease of navigation - the terminal was unfamiliar to me, yet doable to navigate through * Main hub of these airline carriers: Air Canada, American Airlines, United Airlines, and Delta Air Lines. * Restrooms were well-maintained, presentable, and clean * Availability of seats near boarding gates CON: * The TSA line was super long and had a minimal number of workers Overall, it was a straightforward experience. I look forward to returning should I have any more flights outside of Southwest Airlines (Terminal B) and need to visit Terminal A.

American Airlines, Delta Airlines, United Airlines, and Air Canada fly out of here. I am flying with American Airlines going to visit family. It gets some used to since I am used to the B Terminal side with Southwest. It doesn't seem like there's as many eateries on this side. I saw Magpie Cafe, Wendy's, West Coast Sourdough, Centro Cocina Mexicana, and Starbucks. There's a Bar New Helvetia which is craft beers brewed in Sacramento which is pretty cool for the beer lover!! There's Taylor's as well. Oh! There's those market shops and other retailers. I see signs stating more eateries/shops to come. There's signs of remodeling, too. There's vending machine options as well. The bathrooms are always clean and spacious. I love the tall private doors. Inside the stalls are a nice ledge to put your duffle bag on and hang your backpack at the door. I don't like putting anything on the floor! When entering the airport terminal at American Airlines, you can check in at the kiosk or at the counter. Once done, there's escalators to go upstairs. You then walk over to the left in the overpass walkway. You'll see the TSA checkpoint. After this area is your shopping/eateries. Overall, I love smaller scale airports. It's easy peasy to get around. The very large ones may have everything, but it's a workout to get to the area you need to be. This is spacious enough that it deserves the five stars for efficiency and functionality!!

She explained the amenities and just by scanning the area, I could tell this was a nice place. As we were making our way up the room, Maria from housekeeping greeted us and let us know if we need anything, please let us know. Arrived at our floor and you can tell how comfy and inviting the bed is. Woke up and decided to take advantage of the gym at 5am. Greeted by Seth as I was helping myself to coffee. There were some items ready in which he added to help myself. As I thanked him, he reminded me breakfast will start at 7am and provided me what was on the menu. Made it to breakfast with Cecilia who works the area. I briefly met her along with Madison when I first checked in.
