I can't imagine a better gift, not only following my car wreck, but also to kick off what many of us consider to be the most stressful month of the year. For the next three weeks, I will be exploring each modality at Electric Elephant Spa, starting today with flotation therapy! My initial feelings about sensory deprivation and being alone with my own thoughts (!) for an hour in a strange environment were anxiety, apprehension, excitement, and pure curiosity. I did a fair amount of Googling and reading others' comments on Facebook before my appointment, which probably skewed my expectations. Don't be like me. Be like Nike and JUST DO IT! Post-float my perspective is quite different. This is clearly not the scary pod/coffin that was giving me the most grief. This is a 10'x5' pool that couldn't be less claustrophobic if it tried. I'm not sure I had a mental picture or expectation of how my body would be positioned while I floated, but I ended up being most comfortable in the 'baby sleep' position, arms above my head. It was the only thing that felt natural. I have a busy mind and am typically hyperaware of my surroundings. That didn't change. What did change was my awareness of space and time, which were non-existent in a weightless, dark place. Hard to explain, but while I knew I was there an hour, it also felt more like 20-30 minutes. After floating what I would guess was half (?) the time, my right wrist started throbbing out of nowhere. Over the past month +/- I've started having some carpal tunnel symptoms in that wrist, and the magnesium in the epsom salt pinpointed that and started trying to heal it. Wild! (This is where prior research DID come in handy.) Definitely do not shave, wax, pick a scab, or do anything else to unnecessarily expose raw skin or fresh pores prior to a float - you will be sorry if you do. I only had a couple little paper cuts and scabs that bothered me, but I cannot imagine the unbearable discomfort that would come along with having an open wound or freshly shaved legs. Also, you will be hot and freshly lotioned trying to dress in a warm room when this experience is over. Wear clothes that won't fight you. If you're curious about flotation, hyperbaric oxygen therapy, and/or oxygen/light bar therapy, their website is a great quick read (and they'll be offering massage and an infrared sauna soon). The owner, Tanya Rae, is warm, welcoming, and informative. She will educate you and put your mind at ease.
