My Aunt and Uncle became residents at Elders Inn in October 2017. She was diagnosed then with early stages of dementia, and he had a colostomy bag. Elders Inn is a well-run family-owned managed business located in Alameda. This facility is a safe, wonderful, engaging place for the residents who live there and for the family/friends who visit them. It is very 'clean' and the residents are cared for appropriately. We have found the staff to be very professional, kind, caring, and attentive to the needs of the residents. The nursing staff does an excellent job in medication management and any other medical issues which may arise. A monthly calendar of events is provided to each resident containing all the daily activities, entertainment, and special events which the residents can optionally attend. We have always felt welcome when visiting. The management and staff have always been responsive to our needs and requests. Sadly, my Aunt and Uncle passed away in January 2024 and October 2018 respectively. The family will 'always' be indebted to Elders Inn for their loving and diligent care! Elders Inn has exceeded our expectations 'in every possible way' by providing quality senior living services and striving to provide 'value' in all that they do for your loved ones! I came here at the invitation request from a visiting family member for a witness to a formal transaction. The small parking lot is located off of Buena Vista across from 7/11 even though the facility address is on Webster. The gate is secured with an intercom buzzing. The female staff members and male head admin I came across were all very nice and courteous. The facility looks well lit and each resident has their own private individual room. I see from the posted flyers that lots of activities are offered to their seniors including yoga! There is also a private courtyard with benches, chairs and tables. read more

My mother recently passed of natural causes, she was 93 years old. For the past 10 years, she had lived at both Elder's Inn on Webster in Alameda and its sister facility The Lodge. She picked these two older adult communities for the care they gave the residents, and the activities offered to stimulate her both educationally and artistically. She loved the art classes, history classes, flower arranging and crafts classes, music programs and discussion groups. She thrived in both communities, and came to regard the staff as her second family. We often told her she was hard to get on the phone and she would laugh that she was just busy chatting with people, doing things and having fun! We will miss my mother immensely but know that she was well cared for and valued and respected as a person while she lived at both The Lodge and Elders Inn. read more

Okay. I want to be fair. First, this seems to be a clean and pleasant choice for an elder who needs assisted living. Their staff seems to be very long term, meaning that they like the place and are treated well. When one is paid dirt for wages, as most elder care folks are, longevity is a huge plus. It means they will probably treat your mom or dad well. The facility seemed pleasant and clean. I really liked the manager, too. I loved that they had a concern for those with Parkinson's and that they had an in house therapy unit. Everything was great, until we took our father to visit. I have a few hints for those who give tours. First, don't show a room to a potential resident that still has furniture from the last resident. He or she will immediately assume that is what they will be forced to use during their stay. If you want to show that particular room, do it last, and explain carefully, and fully, that it will be empty and ready for the new resident's furniture when he or she arrives. Make sure it is the last room you show. Next, never, ever, talk about private money to the resident. Or anything else you learned from their family members in a previous trip. If a family member discloses personal information to you, that is given in trust, and not expected to be shared. You can ask questions to elicit information from the potential resident, but don't betray the trust given to you by the family members by disclosing that information given to you. Ask who to talk to about how to pay for the residency. Don't assume it is the son or parent. Third, and this is a biggie. Joking about, "finding a girlfriend" to someone who was married for 50 years can be amazingly crass and inappropriate. Sure, it could be fine with some people, but for others, it is it is a Really Bad Idea. read more

Elders Inn is an assisted living facility owned by the same folks who own Waters Edge nursing home (read my review of that place too!!!) down by the Park St Bridge. Pros and cons here. I would give 4 stars except for one really bad situation that they made no attempt to rectify. I would give zero stars for that one situation. This happened around 2002 (the facility was fairly new at the time) but the story still needs to be told. The place was clean, comfortable, and afforded my father the independence he craved after a stroke left him somewhat mentally and physically impaired. He paid around $3,700/mo for his room/board, which was one of the better, more pricey rooms at the time. To our great surprise, he was very comfortable and content to be living there. He enjoyed the company of the other tenants and also the very kind and attentive employees. He also enjoyed the food. It was very important to him and to his family that he have the most freedom and personal dignity he could possibly have under the circumstances. He ESPECIALLY enjoyed the nice young woman who worked there who would regularly take him down to the mall and help him to withdraw hundreds of dollars from the ATM so he could buy stuff for her. He felt sorry for her because of all the sad, sad stories she told him about her sad, poor life. So he'd give her money to pay for the shoes that her children needed. Lots of shoes, apparently! And they would go from store to store to store, using his credit cards to buy many, many untraceable $200 gift cards for her poor, poor family. My father's stroke impaired his mental capacities. It had affected his memory, judgement, and also his ability to process numbers. $1 dollar was the same as $1,000. He also became very emotionally attached to any caretaker. When I brought the situation to the attention of the managers, they immediately circled the wagons. They told me "there's nothing we can do because he's an independent adult!" This was despite the fact that he was legally incompetent. As his guardian, I wanted to call the police on her. They told me to keep quiet about it because they knew about her shenanigans and they were trying to get rid of her discretely - and yet they did nothing. How about fire her thieving ass publicly??? It was complete bullshit. Sadly, he weakened and was transferred to Waters Edge (read my review!) and eventually passed away. So I had my hands full dealing with that and didn't have time to chase down the Case of the Predator Aide. But the owners and managers never made any attempt to rectify the wrong that was done by their employee. They didn't bring in the police or even fire her, although it was a clear case of elder financial abuse. I couldn't even confront her myself because my dad was reluctant to tell me who she was (because she had been his "friend" and he was ashamed to admit he had been conned). So there you have it. We were very satisfied with the facility, the rooms, the food, pretty much everything. But is it too much to ask to NOT have some predator escorting the tenants to the fucking ATM? Or to at least GET RID of that person? Or say, "sorry, we really failed our vulnerable elders by hiring her. Here's the money she scammed out of your father?" Apparently yes, that's too much to ask from Elders Inn. If I sound angry it's because I AM angry, all these years later. He LIKED it there. WE liked him being there. My mother has lived at Elders Inn for many years. The staff is very caring and patient. My mother was lonely and depressed and the administrator arranged for a Friendly Visitor to come in for her. The staff treats their residents with compassion and dignity. I visit frequently as do my children and we feel like we are part of the family. We are very happy with our decision to have our mom live at Elders Inn. She is able to retain her independence but be well-cared for. If you are looking for a facility that will take care of your loved one in a safe, homey and clean environment you will get that at Elders Inn. read more

My mom moved into Elder's Inn just as the pandemic started. Her care at Elder's Inn has been great during this difficult year! Through all the changes with Covid and her need to see medical professionals, they have been great at balancing safety and access to services. As her condition has declined, they have also been very helpful and compassionate. She initially moved to the sister property The Lodge which worked well for her for a couple of years while she was more active. I brought her from the East Coast to live at The Lodge and we are both very pleased about that choice and when it was time to move to Elder's Inn for more support. Genny D read more

My mom was at Elders Inn for the last three years, and even with the confusion of covid, the staff and family provided a professional, safe and loving environment. She turned 100 last year just as quarantine was imposed, and when our large family party was cancelled, Marie and everyone there helped us create a fun, distanced celebration. Mom loved it. If I could add more stars to this review, I would. Elders Inn is outstanding. My mother first moved here in 2011 after my father passed away because she wanted to be in a community of other seniors. Just before my father died, she had surgery with serious complications and needed some extra help. The choice of Elders Inn could not have been more perfect. They provided the right level of physical care and emotional support, as well as the community my mom was looking for. After about 18 months, the staff contacted me and recommended my mom move to their sister facility, The Lodge, also in Alameda. They said she had improved so much physically, emotionally and mentally that she didn't need the higher level of care at Elders Inn and would benefit from the more active community at The Lodge. It was also more cost-effective, which goes to show how they put their residents care first. They were right! And, after a number of very happy years at The Lodge, Mom did start requiring more care and she moved back to Elders Inn. It was great for her to return to a familiar place and continue to interact with many of the same staff. She loved the activities and participated in nearly all of them (although they do not pressure you to do that). She loved sitting in the cafe while working word puzzles and chatting with fellow residents and staff. Mom passed away very unexpectedly recently. She had not been ill and Elders Inn had not had any incidents of Covid among residents or staff at the time of her passing as they were taking every precaution to keep everyone safe. Their compassion has been tremendous as it was during her 9 years in their care. The nursing staff was always in touch with us to report how she was doing and answer any questions we might have, particularly during the past year when I could not visit due to the pandemic and when I relocated outside of Alameda. I will also note that my husband's father had been a resident at Water's Edge Lodge Skilled Nursing Facility many years ago when it was owned by the Zimmerman family, who owns Elders Inn and The Lodge, but sold the SNF many years ago. When my husband's father was at the SNF, he also received the most incredible and compassionate care as well. If you are looking for a place for your loved elder family member, your should consider AEC Living's properties, whether it's Elders Inn, The Lodge or their other properties. I have been meaning to write a review for Elders Inn for some time. This is a facility that provides a higher level of assistance than available at their affiliated Alameda assisted living facility (The Lodge). My mother moved to Elders about a year ago. I am constantly amazed at the kindness and caring of the staff at Elders. They are dealing with a very vulnerable population...I stop in at random times during the week and always see the caring interactions between the staff and the residents. I don't know how Elders selects their staff...but they do an incredible job. read more

I can't adequately express my gratitude to the Elders Inn owners and staff for the care they give my mother. Only love and vocation can bring about this level of care and excellence. My mother has dementia, and is in the 'garden community' there, where she has been for the past four years. Her needs aren't just met, they are anticipated and understood. And the amazing thing is - so are mine. As Mom spiraled into greater and greater need, my life as her primary care giver, custodian, and guardian changed dramatically. When it became evident that she wasn't safe any longer without around the clock care, I thank God that we were living in Alameda and were referred to this organization. I can honestly say that I no longer worry about my mother. My dread and anxiety, a constant that was built up over the years of her developing disorientation, is gone. Of course her dementia has challenges, and there is loss. And although she has gotten deeper into this state over these years, she is happy, known, loved, and engaged with her life. She is at home there. And I have partners, a team of people with more experience than I, to help her, and to help me. Five stars, and my highest recommendation! read more

My mom has dementia and - full disclosure - I made sure that Elder's Inn understood this before touring or bringing my mom for a visit. We were assured that they could "handle" her when, in fact, this was just the first installment of the ol' bait and switch trick to get my mom in the door. After being there for a few weeks, they began to set up "meetings" to help her with her transition. At first, I wondered why they had not been interested in transition during her actual transition period (the first few weeks) but after the first meeting, I realized that it was part of their strategy. Soon it was time for the next meeting in which they said she would need a higher level of service at, of course, a much higher price - an increase form $4300/month to $5800/month. They used as "evidence" that she had attempted to walk out of one of their doors - once. Meanwhile, their systems further isolated and incapacitated her. They saw her behavior - misidentification and wandering into residents' rooms - as highly unusual and recommended putting her on an anti-psychotic. Of course, her behaviors are pretty common for ambulatory folks with dementia. If you're looking for a loving place, with flexible, caring staff for your loved one with dementia, I would stay away from Elder's Inn. We moved my mom out after just under 6 weeks which was incredibly hard on her - but we knew we had to do it. Now she's at Agesong Woodpark Care on Fruitvale in Oakland. The folks there are incredible and my mom is free to be herself without judgement. They solved the wandering problem by putting a beeper on her and actually helping her out. They have no problem with her busy body habits and are compassionate to a fault. Elder's Inn is an okay warehouse and probably best for someone who is non-verbal and in a wheelchair. Otherwise, I don't recommend the place at all. read more

My mother and I toured Elders the end of May as a possible place to have her sister (92 yrs. old) move. My aunt has dementia and it is no longer safe for her to live alone and now with a cancer diagnosis medication management will be needed. The administrators at Elders (Denise & Dave) have been very helpful in getting my aunt into Elders which happened on June 2nd. My aunt did not want to move and it was extremely difficult to get her to Elders, but with the help of Dave we got her there. Now my mom and I can rest knowing that she is in a safe place with caring people. I have visited on and off over the past week and was always impressed with how respectful the staff was to the residents. The place is clean, bright and cheery and lots of different activities are planned through-out the day. Having to make the decision to place a loved one somewhere other than with family is difficult, but Elders makes the move a little easier knowing they will be well cared for. read more
