It's pastrami, corned beef, Swiss, dill pickle and sauerkraut, but instead of the Thousand Island or Russian dressing you normally get on a Reuben, Kayrouz uses Düsseldorf mustard. That gives it a completely different flavor and makes it stand out from the other Reubens I've tried. I really liked the atmosphere here, too. It's an older building with a cozy, old-school feel, and I enjoyed looking at all the pictures throughout the inside. It has some character to it that you just don't get in a newer restaurant. The staff was also very friendly and welcoming, which made the visit even better. There's also some pretty cool Louisville history behind the Kayrouz name. The family has been in the restaurant business here for generations, going all the way back to the 1920s. The current deli carries on recipes and traditions connected to J.P. Kayrouz, so you're getting more than just another sandwich shop when you walk through the door. Overall, I enjoyed my visit. The Papa Joe was good, the staff was great, and I really liked the atmosphere. It wasn't my favorite Reuben-style sandwich I've had, but I'd definitely come back and try some of the other things on the menu.
