A stage 4 metastatic lung tumor allowed only 5 short weeks of life. Heartland Provided everything... supplies, medications, and a wonderful team of caregivers. I did not have time to research hospice choices, so I took a recommendation from the facility where the family member was living. They took a long time (more than 2 days) to coordinate with the hospital for release back to the facility. By the time the coordination was done, it was very late in the date (after dinner) when the family member was finally settled back into the facility. We spent over an hour filling out forms with 2 people (a nurse and the case manager). This information was then input into their system and all of the information was mangled. Half of one person's phone number was mixed with someone else's phone number. The address for the facility was typed in with the wrong city, other information was missing. After we were done filling out forms, they nurse called the pharmacy to order medications. At one point while on the phone she asked me if it was okay to order liquid morphine. Why are you asking me? You're the nurse and you're doing the ordering, what do I know? They were supposed to order supplies. They use Amazon. I have ordered supplies to be delivered to that facility for 3 years. It does not take Amazon 3 days to get products there. The person who met with us that first night indicated that they had some supplies in their car. When I reminded them about that, they were hesitant to get them because they didn't want to have to walk back into the facility, so we sent someone out to their car to get them. They could never give us a schedule, a window of time, a day when they would come by to check on the family member. It was always, "we're in the area all the time," "they don't have a set schedule," "they will come every other day or every third day but more often when it gets closer to the end." It was unfortunately a holiday week at the end. Before the holiday I was told they would now be coming out every day. Except they didn't come out every day. They didn't come the day they called to tell me they would come out every day, or the next day which was the holiday or the third day. At 3pm I arrived at the facility to check on things and was told it was the end and called the phone number. They said they would call the nurse. 30 minutes later the facility called the hospice and were told the nurse was on the way. 30 minutes later the director of the facility called and was told the nurse was on the way. 2 hours later the nurse finally showed up. She had never done a pronouncement before, so on her phone, ON SPEAKER, we all had to hear the instructions as they were giving them to her. I ended up calling the funeral home myself. Even though they had this information from the intake, nobody could seem to find the information in their system. I will stop here. Do not use this company.

They were amazing throughout everything. Judith, the head nurse, had excellent communication.- contacting me consistently after she visited with my mother. Bob was a pastor who saw my mom regularly, which we all appreciated and also had great communication.. Gloria and Louis also did a good job with our mother. I feel like I was listened to throughout the process, and everyone was very caring and understanding. They did an excellent job helping our mom be as peaceful and pain free as possible.

After visiting a few places, Sunrise at Hunter Mill was by far the best. Their staff is incredibly nice and they are really good with my grandmother. They also have specialized care for Alzheimers and Dimentia patients (which would be my grandmother). The third floor is dedicated to these residents and the floor is "locked down" - you need a code to use the elevator - this is great because we don't have to worry about her wandering off. There's also a cat on the third floor named Casanova who is the sweetest kitty I've ever met. Casanova stopped by for cuddles and to inspect the room before we even got my grandmother moved in! Another thing I love about this place is that it's very easy just to stop by and visit or pick her up to take her out shopping, for lunch, or family functions. I am very pleased with our family's decision to move her into here because she is well taken care of and so many of the worries I had about her wellbeing are alleviated.

Please, let me tell you how wonderful Nursing Referral Service is!!…read more In 2012 needed some part-time, in-home care for my mother-in-law (MIL), who was diagnosed with dementia in the mid-2000s. My elderly father-in-law (FIL) was simply incapable of caring for her properly. NRS assigned us a wonderful caregiver, Nana, who took care of Mom for about a year before Mom got too unpredictable and violent, and we moved her into a nearby dementia facility in 2014. By then, Nana had moved away, and Emma had taken over as the caregiver. Emma was sooooo amazing!! She took care of Dad, who still thought he was doing everything himself, including his grocery shopping, his laundry, driving him to his favorite restaurant for lunch, and to the local mall to take a walk, the grocery store, the bank, and/or the post office. And she took him to visit Mom in the nursing home once or twice a day, feeding him lunch and dinner (eventually breakfast, too) as he himself grew less competent, mentally and physically. Emma was always kind, considerate, and respectful of him, and made him feel like he was still in charge. Additionally, Emma monitored Mom's needs in the nursing home, as well, buying her Depends, wipes, Sobe beverages, and any other items the nursing home needed for her care. She was truly a Godsend for our family, and we trusted her 100% and relied upon her judgment and experience. In addition to Emma, during the last year or so of Dad's life, we had other caregivers from NRS filling in during the hours that Emma wasn't with him. Ami cared for Dad on Sundays, so Emma could have one day off a week. Ami was wonderful, and gave Dad terrific care, too. Another caregiver we thought very highly of was Wendy, who cared for Dad when Emma took a vacation. (Only one in all the years that she was Mom's and Dad's caregiver!!) There were other caregivers who filled in when Dad's "regulars" were absent, too, and all went out of their way to help Dad get used to them, so as to not confuse him. Were it not for NRS and their outstanding caregivers, we would have had to have placed Dad in a nursing home, something which he always declared he would NOT do willingly, as he "wanted to die in his own house." Dad passed away at 95 years old in December. Emma cared for him until the very end, and she was right there with the rest of the family at his memorial service. She, as well as the other caregivers, and the office staff, Doreen, Vinsene, and Bathsheba, gave us the ability to follow Dad's wishes, and allow him to remain in his home when he passed away. We will always be grateful to them for their assistance... We couldn't recommend this company any higher!! They are caring and compassionate, and they screen their employees to be sure they are a good fit for the family.
