That was awesome, Jessica talked me through each step and made the whole thing fun and relaxing. I had a quick and easy 'move up' of my volume weft extensions. I made a same day appointment for 11:45am. 12pm and no one had checked in on me after arriving early for the appointment. Several minutes later I asked if the stylist would be much longer and I was told she was finishing up. I took it upon myself to look and the stylist was still in the midst of blow drying someone else, I would say 12:15 or so. I walked to the front desk as a courtesy to cancel because of the appointment time delay and they had the nerve to ask if I wanted to reschedule!! If I could give this salon NO stars I definitely would! I had been going to this salon for years. I brought my 3 children, husband, my mom & even my Mother in law here for hair services. On June 1st I paid around $350 for an all over blonde color and the stylist did very minimal highlights which wasn't I had asked for. My hair was a blank canvas with NO pre-existing hair color so there was no reason for my hair to still be my natural color with the tiniest bit of highlights when I left that day. I came back within the 7 day guarantee window and even the stylist admitted to me that YES she didn't do what I wanted and was happy to fix it. (All of which was sent through Instagram) I regret coming back for the 2nd correction appointment because the owner, Jessica, completely wrecked my natural hair. I walked out with horrible, orange brassy hair that day. I had to pay $27 for her to wreck my hair. So I spent about $400 this month at this salon and turned out looking like a clown. When I confronted Jessica about it she degraded me over and over about what I wanted it when it's clearly NOT even close to what I asked for. I will be contacting the BBB and the board of cosmetology of Delaware. I found out that JESSICA, THE OWNER, isn't even licensed to do hair and RUINED MY HAIR! read more

Donna, my stylist, does a fabulous job with my hair The staff is always pleasant and friendly. I read one review that said they push their products but I wouldn't call it "pushing". They do ask if you want any of the products they sell but there is never any pressure at all to buy. After a review I left, I was contacted by this salon. They offered me to come back in for a fix at no cost. I booked a time with another stylist and was told this was no problem. When I showed up I was told that this would be a new service and would be paying full price. It was noted in the computer, but whoever this lady was at the front desk assisting Amanda, said she had no knowledge and that they only offered "a fix" 7 days after the service. Since I was not even contacted until after about 7 days I can't imagine how this makes sense. Unfortunately my last experience at Elayne James Salon was disappointing. I had an appointment with for 10:45 on a Sunday. At 10:15 I was called and asked to change my hair cut and style appointment to 12:15. I knew the person didn't have a full schedule so I wanted to respect that and arrive when she preferred, even though we can't cancel in such short notice without a fee, per their guidelines. I followed their guidelines and arrived early at my appointment early. I was told the stylist would be with me shortly. I waited until 12:30 in the waiting room, no word from an employee, and decided my time was clearly not respected by the staff. I informed the front desk person I would be leaving and she said okay. I asked her to have the owner, also a stylist, to please call. I followed up with an email to three emails on their website to be sure I could express my disappointment in service and professionalism. It's been 13 days, no return email or phone call. I've been going to Elayne James since I moved to Middletown years ago. It's slowly declined in service, which is unfortunate because I really did like the salon when the owner first took the salon on as a business. read more

Brides beware. I initially had them booked for my wedding. I realized coming up close to the wedding that this was a mistake. Communication is very poor. I was scheduled with stylists for my trial who wouldn't be at the wedding. So I was charged half price and advised that they could take pictures for the girls who would be there on my day. I was never contacted again to confirm how many girls would be receiving services. I called several times afterwards requesting to speak to the bridal coordinator, because I wanted a hair retrial with the actual girls who would be there, tell them how many girls I had needing services, and have better communication. After waiting a few days, I emailed to advise the coordinator that I would be cancelling all services for my wedding. I never received a call or email back to acknowledge the cancellation. This all transpired 1 month before my wedding. Luckily I was able to find another salon, but I know all brides may not get this lucky. read more

We recently moved to MIddletown and was looking for a good place for men's haircutting that was more than just a 10 min buzz cut. The first place I went to was a disaster and was afraid this was going to be an ongoing problem. My wife suggested I try Elaine James as they also do men's cuts. Rosa is the stylist they suggested and the work she does is fantastic. Understands men's hair styling and is attentive to what goes into good grooming. She takes the time to ask and is a perfectionist when it comes to what it takes to achieve a look that works for the client. This is much more than a " hair factory" and for those who want to really look good (men or women), I suggest you consider giving them a try and judge for yourself. read more

Very disappointed with how the events played out on the day of the wedding in regards to hair and makeup. The salon staff arrived 30 minutes late and we were told they stopped at the salon together before arriving, which is fine but soon after they arrived, they didn't seem to have a "plan of attack" for the day and soon after they started they had to send out for more tools. I was very upfront about the time I wanted everyone to be done (3:30) and the bride wasn't done till closer to 4:45 and the maid of honor wasn't finished until after that. This delayed a lot of events and impacted pictures before the ceremony as well. It was especially annoying as one of the stylists wasn't doing any work half of the time. Not sure if she was training, but if that was the case, I would have hoped they would have sent an additional stylist. I did think that everyone looked beautiful, but, we had a very strict timeline that was impacted due to the delays that this salon caused. I also felt that the trial period for this salon did not go well at all leading up to the wedding...I would have changed to a different salon along the way if I was able to find one in the local area that could accommodate on site service without extra travel charge. Overall, I would not recommend this salon and will not be using their services in the future. read more

A manager from the salon reached out to me due to me giving the stylist a poor rating, I called her back no one was there to speak with me. I left my phone number & no one ever called me. I am certainly a fan because the outcome of my full foil highlights came out beautiful, the first time, but not a fan of the pricing and my last visit was a little uncertain regarding the outcome of my color. I Don't mind paying a decent amount for great hair, but they are very expensive especially based on some of the girls experience levels here. A few of the girls here have decent experience and very good at what they do however, their are a few who don't fit that category so choose your stylist wisely especially for the amount you will be spending. If I could give no stars I would. I had told the stylist that I was okay with taking many sessions to go blonde, didn't care about how much it would cost over time and the maintenance. I had understood and wanted to take the time so I could keep my hair healthy....i had hair that was around elbow length and walked out of there with hair just below my shoulders because it was so fried. My hair continued to fall out no matter what I did! It was horrible. I will never go there again and never recommend that to anyone. The girl should have never left the bleach on as long as she did and continue to service multiple clients at the same time. My stylist was very sweet and gave me exactly what I wanted for my hair. HOWEVER, my issue with the salon is their pricing. I walked out of there with a $300 bill for HIGHLIGHTS & one hair treatment (PH bonder? Whatever that even is). I was told that i should do the PH bonder in order to keep my hair healthy during the lightening process. I feel that this salon has turned into a business that pushes you into spending as much money as possible. I ended up having to componsate my tip for the stylists bc I was not expecting my bill to be this expensive. I also had to tip the assistant that was helping the stylist with my hair majority of the time, which was another unexpected expense. Then, at checkout I was bullied by the manager to purchase a product for my hair. I did not feel like she was genuinely trying to help me, I felt as if she was just trying to make more money off of me. I am very disappointed in the business-like service that elayne James has. I moved to Middletown 2 years ago and although I work in DC during the week, I haven't gathered up the courage to try other hair stylists in DC because Faith from Elayne James gets it right every time! Faith's services are a little more expensive than other stylists because she is what you would call a senior/advanced stylist - and her skills speak for itself! I came in for a 2-inch trim but on a whim, we both decided I'll get a shoulder-length bob instead and I couldn't be happier! Having moved to Kent County, Delaware in the past year, it was very difficult to find a new hair stylist, especially one that I like, trust, and enjoy. Fortunately, after reading many Delaware Today and other reviews, I decided to check out Elayne James Salon and Spa. I couldn't be more satisfied. The prices were what I was accustomed to - $119 for a cut, 2-color highlight, and style for medium length hair. I got my hair cut shorter though, so next time it should be a little cheaper (since above the shoulder-length hair is less time and product to color, therefore priced lower). My stylist was Caroline (sp?) and she was fabulous. I got great coloring and a wonderful new hair cut. Now I don't have to search for a new place anymore. I'll definitely be going back! read more

I received a Gift Certificate for Valentines Day. I made an appointment and had a whole body massage. It was absolutely great, I was a little reluctant due to medical conditions but I am pleased with their method. As each quadrant of my body was massaged, just when I was going to voice about the intense pressure the masseuse moved to another area. My targeted stress issues were absolutely addressed. However, there is always a very annoying amount of pressure at this salon to add extra services and products... to the point it makes the experience bearable, but not pleasant. I had been a faithful costumer since 2002 and loved it despite being a little pricey but it was worth it!!!my stylist left, but continued to go and see how everyone else was....last 2 times have been awful!!!!! I have long hair and specifically asked if my stylist had experience with doing long layers ..she said yes and then could not do ...started crying and another stylist had to fix and finish.my hair was shorter and choppy..... I figured would try again same thing happened another one lied about experience with cutting long layers and my highlights were not the color I had asked...I looked at swatches and they didn't have the color I wanted but was told they could do by mixing colors....they processes my hair for 2 hrs and then put me under the dryer for another hour...she burned my hair and was not the color we had discussed not even close! I was there from 1145an -715pm because she couldn't cut long layers and was still cutting my hair as she was blowing out at 7:15 pm ....I had to leave because had a special event so never really finished my haircut...literally still cutting my hair as I was paying...side note the other stylist doing each others hair while I dealt with this for hours....very dissapointed read more

I went in for my first visit because I was given a gift card for Christmas. I scheduled the $39 mani -pedi special. It was the the worst pedicure I have ever gotten. She trimmed my nails and had me soak my feet. No cuticle work , callus contouring, foot and leg exfoliation and no foot mask as was advertised. The manicure was no better No cuticle work, no trim or shaping. The polish don't even cover my whole nail and you could see my natural nail thru the polish. Really? If you run a special give what was advertised. I will never go back and will tell my Facebook friends and work people what a disgrace the place is. I threw away my remaining gift card and will NEVER return. This is not how you get new business! read more

I am from New Jersey just outside of NYC, my parents moved to Middletown 6 years ago , so as a treat (which I thought it would be) I made an appointment for pedicures for my mom and I The girl who booked the appointment told me my mom and I would both be at 9:45am. To our surprise they only have one pedicure chair. So my mom had to wait for me to be done . The girl who did my pedicure did nothing but file my toe nails (giving me a lesson on how i shoud nt cut my own ) and wash my feet , I asked for callus remover and it did nothing, as she put it on and took it off right away. and proceeded to wash my feet, put a hot towel over them and polished, She never even used a base coat before polishing. They have an extremely limited selection of colors. Now it was time for my mom to get hers done. The foot bath was never sanitized and a different girl came in and did them and she was a bit more thorough then the girl I had. They were nice enough to put coat of polish on my 6 year olds toes for $5. I went to pay and could not believe I was charged $64 for mine and $64 for my mothers. I paid and when I went outside I thought, I pay $ 20 for a killer pedicure at home in Bergen County. I did go back in and question the charge for my moms as the menu said $ 47. They did apologize that they overcharged me by $21 And proceed to explain that each technician has different prices. REALLY! I can understand hair stylist having different prices but nail technicians. Avoid this place ! They are overpriced and do a horrible job. When my mom called her neighbor who lives in the same delevopement her comment was we should ave gone to Walmart they do a better job. I came home to NJ and got an amazing pedicure for $20.00. So for all that live in or near Middletown, DE. Stay away .....waste of money and time.
