The food was good but for that service I could have gone to Taco Bell and been almost as happy, and still fed. In hindsight I could have driven 30 minutes home and been as well off for free. I didn't know my business would apparently be so unvalued or I would have. I just ordered 2 el pastor tacos and the chips and salsa they brought to begin with. The female waitress gently tried to talk me into a lunch special with rice and beans but I'm on a tight budget. but I also needed to eat something before the drive home after a recent Sunday funeral for someone I didn't know well and didn't feel comfortable going to their family gathering, and this place wasn't far away and they had good reviews. But the service was sllloooowww. Mind you they were busy. But I also ordered ONLY 2 TACOS! Good service would expedite the 2 solitary tacos ahead of the group of 10 or however many. From when I sat down and got chips and salsa it took a long time to even take my order, and then it took a half hour from when I walked in and sat down and was given a menu to even get 2 TACOS. A HALF HOUR. I'm starving and patient in the moment, so I look up some things I need to look up on my phone. No checking back before or after. I still left a good tip based on percentage of order total but it's because I'm a good customer and have family who've waitressed. It certainly wasn't because she deserved it, because I also had to go up and ask for my bill. I couldn't help but think I was alone and "only" ordered 2 tacos (as a paying customer) so maybe she thought I'm not worth the effort, but not even 30-60 seconds worth? For a paying customer?! I ran out of water but she wouldn't have known, because she easily avoided or forgot me sitting at the one table for 2 by the door while she went to the people behind me at the larger table near the counter, or to the majority of the people on the other side of the divider in the main area of the restaurant. There are WAY too many options elsewhere, especially when I don't usually eat out, so I doubt I'll ever be back or recommend it, even for what was tasty food. read more

Food is always uniformly great, if you liked it before tomorrow it will be exactly the same, there are alot of choices, breakfast and lunch and take out available. I've gone here many times with my family. I don't know what happened but I just went today 09/22/19 and the cook appears to be in his mid 20s and called my mom a PIG after she asked for 4 salsa's, beans and guacamole. The waitress who's served my family many times who speaks English rather well claimed she didn't speak that much English after my mom told her the cook called her a pig. We had to say it 4 TIMES! She just smiled and handed us our drinks. When we asked for our bill we had to ask 7 TIMES! Never going here again! read more

Wow! So glad we looked at the Yelp reviews before choosing a place for lunch. We all loved what we ordered: The Three Amigos, a creamy fish and mushroom dish, and the lunch special tamales. Prices were very reasonable and portions large, but most importantly everything was fresh and tasted really good! The service was also great. Not where we had planned to eat (we were too late for the BBQ restaurant), but this was a perfectly tasty replacement. Their carne asada was skirt steak and was grilled perfectly- flavorful and juicy. The carnitas were equally tasty. Make sure you add the nopales (cactus) and onions as they fry it all up together into a delightful hash. Beans, rice, and tortillas were your standard fare. Had the enchiladas coloradas for lunch. Very good. Served with a roasted poblano (I think), guacamole, rice, & beans. The rice really tasted like Mexican rice, not the flavorless stuff other places serve. The enchiladas were served with tasty chunks of beef & the red sauce also had an authentic Mexican flavor. Real Mexican food. Service was friendly and fast. Only downside: Restrooms were a little grungy, but not unsanitary. read more

My wife and I call this place "The Fancy Ladies". The owner, Rosa, is very nice, very well dressed (always!) and an astute businesswoman. Both she and Maria have a great sense of humor. We travel a lot and consider the food here to be as good as any Mexican fare in this part of the country. It is our "go to" place when we have out of town guests. Took my husband's parents here while they were here on vacation. Mother-in-law found a hair in her meal. Notified staff and still had to pay for the meal. Very dissapointed with the service and food. Definately wouldn't recommend eating here. read more

Our family has been frequent visitors to El Vaquero for quite a few years (10+), so it was quite disappointing to have received such vulgar comments from the cook on September 22, 2019! Two in our party arrived at 7:15 pm, awaiting the other persons to join us for dinner. Made were our usual requests that everyone have their own salsa, beans and guacamole bowls so as not to "swap spit", although we shared the chip basket. The business owner/matron, in relating the order to the young cook (who appeared to be in his mid-twenties), received the response, "puerco", which means pig, in English. All within earshot of our table, two away from the cashier's counter, we were more than appalled that he would be allowed to insult regular paying customers who tip very well! When the owner approached for our drink order, she was told that we overheard the cook calling us pigs, and she pretended not to hear, asking for the types of drink desired, after smiling and managing a slight laugh. Not funny, the story was related to her FIVE, I repeat, FIVE TIMES, and she then pretended not to know the English language! "I don't know English well," she said. WHAT? She can take our order, bring out the product, but pretend not to know that she was within four feet of her own cook calling customers PIGS???!!! Oh no... We told her that we would not be insulted by her or any of her employees, so asked for the bill, which was not produced. The untouched food was left on the table and this family will NEVER BE RETURNING TO EL VAQUERO EVER AGAIN! We should have learned from the photo posted of a cockroach in the vegetable dish another patron experienced. On Tuesday, August 24, 2019, the owner sent her daughter, who wasn't present on Sunday evening, to our place of work to explain that the cook said, "puerquito", an item on the restaurant menu. No, we had not ordered a main dish, so the word wouldn't have been on the cook's mind. Oh, she then stated, he was asking how we wanted the pork/puerco cooked. Really? Who ordered a main dish with pork/puerco? Good try. The daughter was told that she wouldn't have to worry about the incident as we would never patron the restaurant again. No apologies, just excuses..bad business practices. read more
