We ordered the steak fajitas, carne asada, queso, and a couple of other dishes, and unfortunately everything was bland and lacked flavor. The steak was shaved so thin it was more like the steak used for a Philly cheesesteak than traditional fajita or carne asada steak. Haven't been here in years but was driving by and decided to stop in. They were slow to seat us but once they did our service was super sweet and friendly. The chicken taquitos were excellent, served over salad with a side of guacamole and salsa. The chicken was very tasty! The burrito was huge and looked excellent as well. Loved the chips and salsa and the salsa was definitely homemade! I gave a 4, due to slow start and due to the margarita being very generic. As I stated before, the looks of the food is not that of which you'd find at Monterrey's, but the taste is amazing, and the chicken is better in the sense that you can cut your enchiladas with a fork due to it being so tender and more shredded than at Monterrey's, as theirs is a lot more "chunky", so just an FYI: be prepared to use your knife! The four stars is for the overall experience, and I have deducted 1 star for the service; no refills were offered. Literally one of the best experiences ever. Carmen took great care of us. She even let me practice my Spanish wile double checking in English that I said the right thing. Waitress was very professional and friendly. Food was amazing and drinks were strong. We were visiting family here in NC. And I can't wait to come back. We ordered take out and were given a 15-20 pick up time. I waited one hour then got home and our vegetarian dish was meat and chicken. We called the restaurant to tell them and the women who answered the phone hung up on us both times. After this experience I would not trust them ever again. The food isn't even that good. El Vallarta in Monroe has a nice atmosphere and friendly staff. I really like their food...it is standard american/mexican food...although some of their offerings look to be authenticly yucatan influenced. If you want a quick, cheap lunch or dinner, this place should definitely be on your radar! My husband and I always split an entree...and, that is more than enough food for two adults! We also get the cheese dip as an appetizer! My only real complaint is the margaritas...they are hit or miss, and often come without the alcohol! At one point my husband would walk to the bar and order our margaritas or make an excuse and go to the bar just to confirm our drink order. They were pouring our 'top shelf' margarita from a pitcher and tried to say it was all pre-mixed and pre-made...well, it did not have that same color the brandy adds to it and it definitely did not taste right!! We do not order mixed drinks anymore!! This is a great casual place to enjoy dinner with friends. read more

This is the best Mexican restaurant around. I have been coming here for years and the food is always delicious. I've never had a bad experience. The service isn't the best but it's not the worst either. The staff is friendly enough and I've never had to wait too long for anything even when super busy.
