Cuban sandwich is excellent! Service is competent. Prices are good and portions are ample! What else need one say?

Excellent food and great service! We are a group of 4 and visiting Fort Lauderdale. After a quick…read moresearch on Yelp, this came up. We were all hungry so no photos but I had a cuban sandwich with fries. We had plantain chips and a fried yuca as a shared appetizer. First taste of a plantain chip, it was delicious and knew this place would be special. I also had 2 cuban espressos. I originally only planned drinking 1 but it was so good a second was absolutely necessary. Outside my sandwich the rest of my group ordered rice plates with beef, shrimp, and chicken. All excellent from what I tried. We ended strong on probably the best tres leches I've had. Others taste watery to me but this was sweet and flavorful. I'd come back a second and third time if I could.

I read the reviews on Yelp and decided to try it. We were the only people in there, which was a bit strange for a Friday evening at 7 (maybe it's more of a lunch place?). The gentleman that took care of us was very nice and friendly. We had the cuban sandwich - I agree with some of the comments on Yelp that the sandwich was good quality, but somewhat bland. We tried the Vaca Frita (marinated skirt steak with sautéed onions on top), rice and tostones and the Pechuga De Pollo a La Plancha (chicken breast with onions on top). They were good. Also had a side of black beans and cilantro sauce. The walls of the restaurants are filled with hand-written notes and signatures from previous patrons. I was able to find some rare white space to add my name as well.

The place was absolutely adorable and was fully decorated for the World Cup, which gave it such a fun atmosphere. As soon as you walk in, you're greeted by an incredible selection of empanadas and pastries. They had everything from savory options that would make a perfect breakfast or lunch to beautiful sweet pastries that looked so mouthwatering in their display case. Since it was so early in the morning, we weren't hungry yet, so we just ordered our café con leche to go. The coffee was exactly what I was hoping for, and even though the place got pretty busy while we were there, the service was quick. Looking back, I definitely regret not picking up a few pastries or empanadas because everything looked amazing. Thankfully, that's just another reason to come back the next time we're in town.

The server was extremely nice and answered all of our questions as we did not recognize a lot of the local Argentian desserts. In short : Come for the authentic Puerto Rican comida and stay for the beautiful atmosphere…read more It was my father's birthday and I wanted to take him for Puerto Rican food. He is Puerto Rican :) and we do cook some but not all of it . Anyway... Backstory: Chef Iram Ayala was born and raised in Caguas, Puerto Rico. This is considered Jibaro territory and they are known to be great cooks ! He has worked in many high end hotels such at The Breakers, Ritz Carlton etc. He started in the Hollywood farmers market and his comida became so popular that he opened this restaurant in honor of his grandmother Sara. Wela is short for Abuela which means grandmother in Spanish . Atmosphere: it's a tiny space located directly off Hollywood blvd but hard to miss because of the colorful storefront. Inside it feels as if you are stepping in Puerto Rico. Taino artwork is all over the walls ( Taínos are the indigenous people that all Puerto Ricans descended from). It's breathtaking. Appetizer: We ordered beef empanadillas (what Ricans call empanadas ) , Alcapurrias, and croquetas de mofongo. The empanadillas were fresh and came with a mayo ketchup sauce. Alcapurrias are specific to PR cuisine and they are a plantain fritter stuffed with whatever meat you desire . We had beef and they disappeared instantly . The croquetas stole the show in my opinion. They are unique in that they are made out of mofongo, stuffed with cheese (or whatever you want ) and served with a guava salsa. They were fire! Get these! Dinner: My father had the chuletas with arroz con gondules , my son and nephew both had steak and I had a pernil mofongo. Let me just take a moment to say this mofongo was probably one of the best I've had in a looonnngggg time . It wasn't dry.. it was so flavorful and the pernil was amazing. I had to stop myself for eating it all. Everyone liked their meats but the arroz con gondules was a bit lacking . It could've had more gondules and some green olives and/or pork. I'm used to My dad and Abuelita making it so flavorful so my standards are high on that side dish. For dessert we had the homemade tres leches . It was light , almost too light . Service was good.. our waitress was very nice. Overall I would definitely come back again.. Especially when they have their live music .

My wife was a bit out of her comfort zone initially--she wasn't quite sure how to order or what to expect--but she ended up absolutely loving everything. The mixed ceviche plate was a highlight; the juice used to cook the fish was perfectly balanced and really highlighted the freshness of the seafood. I ordered the special, which featured a lobster tail over rice with fried octopus. The octopus was perfectly crispy, providing that savory, satisfying experience you look for in a great meal. If you are looking for a busy, vibrant atmosphere with top-tier food, this is the place to go. We left feeling completely satisfied and will definitely be back!

The décor and ambiance is so fun and really sets the mood. It was a little loud for conversation, but the music was great and fit the vibe perfectly. Santiago was an amazing server! 10/10 service! He was attentive, friendly, and made the experience even better. The food was delicious. The ceviche and causa were standout dishes, and while the concha was good, I didn't think it quite justified the price. I also had a fantastic cocktail that I'd definitely order again. Overall, such a fun experience, and I'll definitely be back!
