One of my all time favs has bad management. If you post, you are open in till 9pm. Then do not close at 830, 845, 815. Happen to me 4 times now. I don't care when you close...just Publish a schedule and stick to it. Do turn off "open " sign as we walk thru the door. Also, price increases are way out of line. I usually don't eat Mexican food here in SA since I'm from NM and it's my favorite from back home..but have to say this place surprised me.. Went for dinner here the other night, have to say it was very good and their salsa was so good and spicy, it was the first salsa I had here in SA that was actually really good and didn't taste like tomato sauce. Was told the cook from Jacalas worked here, so I was hoping. I so miss Jacalas. Did not taste anything like it, puffy tacos were very, very greasy and fell apart. Waitress was very catering to my husband, but I had to ask for everything. Had to ask another person for a to go container and extra napkins, because I we were only given one napkin. Also, when I went to pay, my check was rounded up almost $4.00. So I guess, I didn't have to leave a tip. Really not worth the price. My husband's puffy taco was mostly lettuce, no tomato. Case in point, my wife, son and I came in to eat, not super busy at all. We were seated and got our drinks. After 45 minutes we still have yet to get our order taken. And witnessed 3 families of 4+ be seated, food came out, and paid. Still no order to be taken. On top of that they have staff standing around and the bust boy took our drink order. Alright this is a no brainer. It's a neighborhood favorite that's been around for literal decades. Service and atmosphere is exactly what you would hope for walking into a Tex-Mex San Antonio restaurant. It's a "sit where you can snag a spot" kinda place, but it's big enough so you can far a big top, 2 top, or sit at the bar Han Solo knocking back a drink. Nachos Rancheros. It's not beans, it's like a beef gravy, THEN it's all the fixings with that melty cheese that most of us remember as kids growing up eating. Little raw white onions and bright red tomatoes. Straight up childhood. The margarita, just order the house on the rocks. They don't play around. When I think of my favorite spot for a fish bowl marg in the rocks, it's El Tipico every time. read more

I attended a party in one of the party rooms. The dinner was prepaid and we had a menu to choose from containing 4 items. The whole experience was quite unexpected. My uncle asked for chips and salsa since the restaurant is a Mexican Restaurant and in order to get to the party room you have to walk through the main dining area. You see customers enjoying their chips and beverages. My uncle was told NO by the waiter because it was not on the "menu" or prepaid items. I thought really?? Then when our drinks were being passed out we had a choice of sweet tea or water. I asked for unsweet tea and was told NO. I couldn't believe that they were not accommodating to my request, which I thought was reasonable. The food orders began, an hour after the party started and just sitting there with no appetizer (chips/salsa). My father asked for a salad before his meal, which is the usually way the food comes (he's a returning customer) and he was told he could not get a salad. Food was brought out promptly, but even though the waiter took our order, they were yelling out the plate to room filled with 60 people. Rolls were brought out before the meal, which was the best part of the experience. Overall the experience was not what I thought it was going to be. I know that we would have gladly paid the difference for our special requests, but were denied the opportunity. We are definitely not a fan of the service and food. read more

I ordered Beef Crispy Tacos for lunch. This was a first and LAST experience. My daughter was treating me to lunch and she wasted her money on my food. I thought it was impossible to screw up tacos until I tried these. If you read the menu and see Beef Sirloin GRAVY - Believe it! Went to El Tipico for lunch, food was excellent but our waiter was less than professional. My sister asked about buying the Modelo glass she was drinking a beer in,, and he said $5, she said ok. All was fine until the check came.. She gave him $60 for a $48 meal which included the glass. We waited and waited and I was literally watching the guy go all over the restaurant and in and out of doors, the bar, everywhere but the cashier. Well she came by our table and I told her his name and that he has not returned with the change of $12.. so finally he came back and said $5 for the glass, which He had already included it on our bill. She had also asked for a copy of the bill which he never gave her, so she went back in and he rushed her out the door and tried to give her the $5back, and apologized for lying and keeping the money! I have eaten at the original (now closed) for numerous years and it was always good. So we decided to try this one. Of course I was going for one of my favorites, cheese enchiladas. They looked different than what I remember. Cheese over and above the norm, which should be a good thing. However, I don't think it was real cheese. It was more of a cheese sauce on the included cheese chalupa that flowed over into everything else. Not sure what kind if cheese that it was. It tasted a lot like Velveeta. A little of that goes a LOOONG way. The cheese inside the enchiladas wasn't quite melted and after eating some of the other cheese this tasted the same. I was cheese blind at that point. This review is for City Base location. Wanted to try it because it was recommended and I had eaten at Rigsby location before and was good experience. Today was very disappointing and have to say don't plan to go back. We were party of four plus a toddler for dinner, around 6pm, it was not crowded, maybe about 6 other tables had customers. Ordered bean and cheese nachos and had to ask for jalapenos which took quite awhile, were told they had to get them from the back. One of the entrees came with tortillas but we had to ask for them and then never received them. Fish tacos tasted old. Kids hamburger patty tough. Staff was very nice, they did ask several times if we needed anything. I felt that $95 was too much. read more

I came to El Tipico for a friend's birthday party. Because of this event, we reserved a separate dining area from the restaurant as the party would have around 50 people in attendance. For special events, El Tipico charges a $175 rental fee. This information is pertinent to this review. The party was supposed to start at 6, but when I arrived at 6, the staff at El Tipico were still putting the room together. The waitors and waitresses were understaffed for our large party. For 50 people, we had 1 waitor and 1 waitress. There was no clear order in doing anything. Drinks were ordered and never arrived. No refills. Guests had to leave the area to go to the bar to get whatever they needed. By 7:30 everyone was hungry but we hadn't been given a menu and didn't know our options. We ended up having two options (which I believe is customary for large groups of people). Each waitor/waitress went table by table to take everyone's order. The food took another hour/hour and a half to make it to our table. It wasn't hot, but everyone was hungry so we ate. The food here is good mexican food. The enchiladas were delicious and the refried beans were fantastic. Homemade tortillas took the cake as I thought they tasted great. 3 Stars for subpar service, overall organization, and the moving pieces. I went with my family after church on Mother's Day to eat at el tipico and the food and atmosphere was amazing. Server was extremely attentive and recommended us the margaritas and they were the best. Even gave us a rose for Mother's Day. After lunch she recommended us we should try Hoffmans next store that the signature burger was great. Yesterday we went to Hoffmans. Environment was terrible. Entire staff was sitting down. From my experience here. This is not Mexican food. The plate i ordered had can refried beans. The enchiladas had American Shredded cheese and pretty plain. Tostada had lettuce and guacamole no meat, the puffy taco did no have any meat as well. Not gonna lie everything tasted texmex. Pricing is very high compared to other Mexican restaurants around the area. Customer service lacks too. I also got chips and salsa, chips are usually fresh at other restaurants these were cold and just were plain chips, the salsa was ok but not the greatest. We had dinner here for a birthday and were disappointed with the food and service. Unfortunately they were very understaffed. It could have been an off day for the restaurant but we will not be going back. The space is nice and it has a lot of potential but the service we received was not good at all. I asked for 3 different drinks that were listed on the drink menu and was told the first two beers were not available. Then asked for a skinny margarita which was also on the menu and the server asked us how to make it. Apparently the bartender was not there. I ordered the chile relleno which said on the menu it was as stuffed with serloin beef. I was expecting serloin steak but it was filled with ground beef. When I asked the server about it he just said that's how it is and didn't ask if I wanted something else. The food was already slightly cold upon arrival. Paying for the ticket was also a hassle. Been coming to this restaurant for over 20 years and today was the last day. Who ever the new manager is just made it that much easier to never come back. The food was already getting over priced and poor tasting but todays was just horrible. Ordered chicken fajita taco and got 2 strips of chicken. Given they fixed that but then enchilada plate ordered wasn't even cooked with cold cheese on top. They took it back to warm it up only to get back old tasting enchiladas. The steak plate that usually comes with a sirloin steak came with a hamburger steak that usually comes in the chicken fried steak. Chips were stale and soggy in the ranchero nachos. And to make matters worse, when you bring it up to the "so-called" manager, he seems to be bothered that you bring up a problem to him. And when you tell him the child's plate order was wrong that my wife ordered, he says, "well, she shouldn't have been allowed to order that anyways." That's your reasoning for it being shitty! It's our fault cause we ordered something that shouldn't have been allowed, something that we have been ordering for years now! Me and my family went for the first time to try it out last night, last time we come here to put it in short words. Agua de piña was good, agua de limón was alright, waiter was very good and brought us our food pretty quick but then we were waiting on tortillas. The woman making the tortillas or shall I say putting the dough balls in the machine and heated them up, had a horrible attitude and stank face as soon as she came out. It literally took her close to 20 minutes to make us tortillas which should of took way less. Our plates were carne guisada and carne Asada plates which were cold by the time our tortillas came and the tortillas were so undercooked we sent them back to get them cooked longer which just took a ridiculous amount of time. read more
