A diamond in the rough, and a great culinary addition to Commerce.
Calling this a hole in the wall is a disservice to the amount of work and thought the owner and soon-to-be restaurateur has put into it's menu, the consistent quality of their food, and the look of the place. He has big dreams and backs it up with a great deal of commitment and love for the art of giving people great food. The restaurant is a true reflection of his heart of gold and charisma.
First off, it's necessary to point out that many other well-funded taco spots have tried to make something happen in the real estate El Taco Buchon sits on. Rakken Tacos, a 626 Night Market regular, tried and eventually walked away. However, the fact that El Taco Buchon has been able to thrive where others have failed is a testament to their product.
I already mentioned the owner...who is just a stand up type of guy and mature well beyond his young age.
The food...well...where do I start...I'll start with their coctel/cocktail. Why? Because I'm a recent convert. I am of the belief that a taco spot that sells good land-bourne meat, cannot make good mariscos/seafood. It's just my experience. Well, I've found the exception.
In fact, they are so confident about their cocktail that they don't even push it or have it on the menu. Its availability is part of a meager sign in front of their cash register. Why is it good? First off, it's huge. Forget cup size. This is a soup container size. They don't add the usual "filler juice" that other places have nor the cucumber to water it down. In fact, they don't add any juice. All the liquid in the cocktail comes from the seafood itself. Secondly, the combination of the seafood in the cocktail is in larger pieces and had more variety than other spots I've been to. Lastly, and this was why I loved it, I didn't have to add any salsa, ketchup, salt, or anything. The flavors were enough to keep me working on it.
Next, the vampiros are great. The meat is juicy. The tortilla is the right amount of crispy. The cheese is a good quality Mexican cheese that's neither over nor underwhelming. It complements the meat very well. I am particular to their carnitas even though I don't normally eat carnitas. The portions are well sized and well worth the $.
The aguas frescas are great and the owner is constantly trying new iterations of the traditional aguas. My wife and I loved the strawberry water, but the owner only makes it every so often.
They also have a neon-ish green salsa that the owner makes sparingly and keeps in the back. It is distinctly delicious. I've been telling him to make it regularly, and just think it's great.
In terms of ambiance, the place has two large TV screens for watching sports, and, according to the owner, he's moving towards making it a spot where people can lounge while they watch sports.
All in all, this spot is a great spot to have a great tasting and decently priced meal. Provecho! read more
