My family stopped here as the restaurant received great reviews and honestly I'm not sure why. The street tacos were two extremely greasy tortillas with only chopped chicken, no cilantro or onions. I'm talking pools of grease. The salsa tasted like canned tomatoes and the chicken enchilada sauce tasted floury. The burrito was soggy and in a pool of grease. OK, so I just wanted some street tacos... I eat a lot of tacos... Below is a photo of how my "tacos" came out. Al Pastor is supposed to have pineapple... where is the pineapple? This is about as cheap as it comes. Skimpy on the meat and not even on the tortillas. They were friendly enough and the service was OK. The restaurant is in an old gas station and they just threw everything in there like it was just a building they needed. Nothing to write home about. Just a bunch of old tables in an old gas station. Authentic Mexican out in rural Utah? Is that even possible? Why yes, YES IT IS. The last thing my family wanted after driving through CO was American food, so Mexican food it was. The question was which of the three places looked the most legit, and my decision landed on El Sombrero. As soon as my brother and I walked in, we were delighted to find out that this was a family-run shop where all members spoke Spanish. A young man named Marcelo took our order and talked story with us as we waited. He told us that it was refreshing to see fellow POC in this random corner of Utah, and we told him the same. We ended up with: - chips and salsa + a small guacamole ($3.50): stellar. In fact, so stellar that I could probably eat spoonfuls of their guac happily. - lengua (tongue), cachete (cheek), and camarón (shrimp) tacos ($3 each): all super flavorful and even better with the toppings found at the topping bar. I customized mine with cilantro, tomatoes, red radish slices, lime, salsa verde, and salsa roja. - two tamale plate ($12.99): came with a side of rice and refried beans. Every component here was super flavorful and not dry. - carne asada plate ($15.99): my brother wanted it well-done, and it was literally like jerky LOL. Really tasty though! This place is run by a family and is by far one of the better places I've visited in Utah for Mexican food. The tacos come plain, but they have a cart for you to doctor the taco however you'd like. I've been here a couple times and been impressed every time. read more

The food was very authentic and delicious. Small family-owned place with lots of locals eating there. Big portions and lots of smiling attention. Had to have some of the accompaniment bins refilled, but this was done happily, efficiently, and with fresh vegetables, plus. Simple place. I rarely review but feel compelled this time. The good--service was fast, food was hot, and the waitperson was very friendly. The not so good--the food was VERY bland, with almost no discernible use of spices. I'm not talking about fiery hot as I like just mild to medium "heat" but almost no flavor spices in either of our meals; maybe we just ordered badly: enchiladas plate and flauntas plate. On the way out noticed a topping cart over in a dark corner so that probably could have improved things, wish that had been pointed out to us. I also felt the prices were high but who can tell these days, but $19 for two cut-in-half flautas seemed like a lot. Honestly, fast food elsewhere would have been a better alternative. It hit the spot! From the outside, the place looks like an abandoned gas station. However, the inside was clean and nice. There were large selection of drinks. The service was fast and efficient. I had green chili burrito, came with sour cream. The burrito was so big I couldn't finish it. The green chili was so fragrant. My friend had variety of tacos. There was a salsa bar with various toppings including fresh onion, cilantro, salsa, and more. The owner, Esther, went above and beyond. My wife and I live in So Cal. My sister and brother in law live in Vernal, Utah. I called and spoke to Esther and purchased a gift certificate for them to the restaurant. Esther had me give her their address so that she could mail it to them. Instead of mailing it she got in her car and hand delivered it to their home. She did this during lunch when I'm sure that they were busy. My sister said that she was the sweetest lady when she came to the door. The first thing she said was, " Jeff and Sally," our names. Cracked my sister up! Most underrated Mexican establishment in the vernal area. As a matter of fact, this place isn't even rated yet. Crazy, based on how delicious this little gem is. Did you know? It's the locals favorite Mexican food place!!! The salsa is delicious. The sauces you can get are an assortment of deliciousness! All free of any additional charges. The food is awesome, not greasy. The only thing is the menu is not huge. You have all of your basic fare and that's it. It's in an old gas station and it looks like a hole in the wall. However, it's a score in the wall and I'll be back time and again to eat here. Definitely would recommend over any other Mexican place in vernal if you're into fast food, great salsa and good condiments. Two of us had the mole enchiladas which were excellent. Wonderful mole sauce. The tacos were also tasty. You get a pile of meat on two small corn tortillas and then go to the condiment bar and dress it up. Service was good and you pay at the counter. The beans and rice were good. Work brought me to Vernal for a night so I thought I try this place out. The food was pretty decent. Salsa was not spicy at all but the salsa bar has some good flavors. Service was quick and efficient (I was the only one in there...) but my only knock is that for me alone it was almost $25 before a tip. Excellent family-style Mexican restaurant. We had an assortment of tacos, quesadillas, tamales, and the brand new "shrimp chipotle" (a bit like a creamy camarones diablo). Also tried the super nachos - tasty and a giant portion! The kids quesadilla was delicious, especially with some guac (from a side order of guac) and onions (from the salsa bar). As other reviewers have indicated, the tacos come as meat and tortilla only. However, the salsa bar has the perfect condiments to make a traditional style taco -- cilantro, onions, and an assortment of salsas (or pico de gallo if you prefer). Perfect for topping just how you like! The new shrimp chipotle was excellent. I put it on corn tortillas for an excellent meal. Great mix of flavor and spice. He wanted to "drink " the red sauce on the chili relleno *Smoky w a hint of salt.., he said was the perfect counterpoint to the cheese. I ordered a side chicken taco and a side Pastor burrito. added my fixings of cilantro, jalapeño, pico de gallo and salsa... I was stuffed, could barely finish... Stopped in on our way through town and so glad we did!! The food is excellent - all made from scratch. We had chile rellenos and enchiladas and a large side of guacamole. Again, homemade and delicious. They even have homemade horchata too. Don't let the whitewashed building deter you - it's basic inside but extra fantastic food and really great service. Look, it was Cinco de Mayo... my standards were pretty low, just wanting anything vaguely Mexican. I had a couple enchiladas: chicken and al pastor. Chicken was yummm, al pastor was ok. Hubs had two steak soft tacos, which were literally steak and tortilla. I think we didn't know 'how' to order, like, how to crack their code. We ordered to-go. Order came out super fast. Service was really friendly. The salsa bar was nice. Next time in Vernal, we might try again and dine in so we can talk to the server. But it was pretty good. read more
