Smith Mountain Lake has several great Mexican restaurants. This one isn't it. I'm not sure if the servers lack experience because the restaurant hasn't been open that long (as of Nov 2018) or if we saw the best this place can deliver. We visited during a weekday lunch. The place wasn't busy. When a family member asked if a dish included rice and beans, the server said, "I think so." That wasn't convincing. There was a mistake with my order. The server wasn't apologetic and he didn't have a sense of urgency to fix it. When I received the second dish, it wasn't as expected either. I didn't want to watch another plate taken away since my family was eating. I made due. At Cancun, the server would have checked on me quickly to make sure I had what I needed. That is why we will return to Cancun the next time we want Mexican food at the lake. The food was okay at this restaurant, without being extraordinary. If you want excellent service and food, go to Cancun. The atmosphere is more colorful and fun. They quickly correct any hiccups. The server gave us a coupon that we were able to apply to the visit. I think he sensed we were unhappy. Bonus points for ranch sauce and not just salsa, served with the chips.

Fresh, hot chips brought immediately to the table with a very tasty salsa and an unusual southwestern ranch sauce. Add some cheese dip and fresh made guacamole from the appetizer menu and you may need no other foods BUT the menu is tempting! And don't forget to have an adult beverage; the Blue Motorcycle is enormous and the house margaritas are very good. Our group had a Chile Relleno from the build your own combo and they even halved the charge for one item instead of two; her plate was empty and I quote "best Relleno I've ever had". Another member had the Quesadilla Hawaiian and it looked amazing...so much food that half went home with her. And me, I had the Burrito Diablo...super meat filled and very tasty...I'm going back for something else on this menu very soon.

Only got a jumbo mango frozen marg but that's all I need to know how good this place is. Made me feel so much better. Would come again. The people here were so nice too I wanted to cry (in a good way). :D

This place is awesome! I've eaten there a few times and every time I am pleased. The food is great and you get plenty. The fresh guacamole is something you should definitely order. The servers are super nice and attentive!

    Warm basket of chips

We decided to grab El Rio for an early dinner (~4pm) on a Sunday afternoon the last time we were in town and we picked the perfect time to eat because we were the only ones in the restaurant for a little while. We were greeted with a warm basket of tortilla chips, salsa, and white dip. I have never had white dip at a Mexican restaurant in Michigan, and this was the second one that served it in Virginia. It kind of reminded me of a thin cream cheese/ranch dip, but I'm not entirely sure what is in it. I ordered a burrito fajita for my meal and my significant other ordered chicken croquetas. We also ordered three tacos (2 chicken for him and 1 beef for me) and they were good but had a little too much shredded cheese for us. Both of our dinner portions were flavorful and incredibly filling. We also both liked the rice & beans that came with our meals. No complaints on our experience and will likely be back again once we try all of the other restaurants out in town!

We ordered cheese enchiladas but got beef instead

Neither great nor terrible, there are better options. Service and price was decent, simply unremarkable beyond that.

Established in 2007, this family-owned Mexican restaurant located at Westlake Corner in Hardy,…read moreVirginia (near Smith Mountain Lake) is a very popular spot for serving fresh authentic Mexican food in this area. It has a large menu including favorites like fajitas, burritos, seafood, and steaks, plus vegetarian options. It is also well known for its great cocktails, including margaritas, and a good beer selection. It offers the option of dining-in in one of its colorful dining rooms, at its full-bar with a large screen TV, or dining outdoors in its enclosed back patio seating area. You also have the option of ordering on-line or over the phone for pick-up, as well as ordering on the premises for take-out. It also offers catering for special events. After having been selected as number 4 of Yelp's Top 50 most prolific Elites of 2025, a year when I was also awarded the Yelp Triad Squad Photographer of the Year Award at their Yelpies 2025 Award Ceremony, an event that honored the highest-performing Yelp Elites, and where last year I was awarded the Yelp Triad Squad Yelper of the Year Award, I decided that this year, as an All-Star Yelp Elite, I not only wanted to be the first to discover new restaurants, businesses, and important landmarks, and bring them to the attention of the public, but also to uncover those found in hidden paths that for one reason or another have not reached the public in its totality. And Cancun Mexican Restaurant & Grill, located in the in Hardy, Virginia is a perfect example. I had the opportunity of dining at the restaurant for lunch last Wednesday when I was in the area. After arriving in my pearl white Lexus and parking in their parking lot the first thing that caught my attention was Carlos, their new Cancun rooster, a colorful statue that stood in front of the restaurant. The architectural design of its building with its restaurant's sign on a tower high above was also very impressive. As I entered the restaurant I was particularly surprised by its fun, festive, and colorful environment. The restaurant was very clean and decorated with some one-of-a-kind items that gave the place a very unique character. A gentleman whom later I found out was the manager gracefully greeted me and gave me a warm welcome to their restaurant. He then took me to my table. Shortly afterwards my server arrived with some chips and both red and white salsas. Only very exclusive Mexican restaurants serve the white salsa. He took my drink order of a large Virgin Mango Margarita. As he went to have it made I browsed through their extensive menu and saw some very unique items which I would like return another day to have for dinner. But since it was lunchtime I ordered their Quesadilla Rellena with shredded beef. They were served with pico de gallo and sour cream and I asked for Guacamole extra. While I waited for the food order to be made I enjoyed my delicious Virgin Mango Margarita which was amazing, while also having my chips and salsa. The Quesadilla arrived fresh and hot and filled cheese and a well seasoned shredded beef. I invite you to view my photographs accompanying this review to get a better sense of the place and the high-quality food served here. When I was finished eating my server brought me the bill without first asking me if I wanted dessert. Since it was late I decided to have it at the movie theater I was going later on. But next time I come for dinner I will definitely have their Mexican Fried Ice Cream. As I was leaving the manager showed me around the restaurant as well as the outside seating area in the back patio, and again thanked me for dining at their restaurant. In conclusion I highly recommend this Mexican restaurant for its exquisite, genuine Mexican cuisine, its amazing margaritas, its festive, welcoming, and relaxed environment, together with wonderful customer service.
