Great location, and food was right on par. Nothing special, but the view on the deck is fantastic. They had many delicious sounding cocktails and even dessert drinks, which we'll have to come back for! However, service was much slower than a typical Mexican restaurant and, as stated previously, portions aren't very large. Moreover, we were EXTREMELY dismayed by the drunken employee screaming at everyone that theyd be closing in 15 minutes (we had just received our food) and that everyone needed to get out. This restaurant replaced Chopsticks. It has been open for approximately one week. The location is going to get built in traffic from the marina crowds and people traveling over the bridge. If you like Mexican food, you should include this restaurant in your plans while visiting the lake. The free chips and salsa were great. Since the employees make fresh guacamole at your table, I would assume the salsa is freshly made too. The business is so new that servers aren't used to having special requests made (i.e. substituting refried beans for black beans or using mild salsa if a dish is made with something spicy). However, if you request a substitute, they will accommodate you. Not all of the servers speak fluent English but the managers do. The outside patio overlooks part of the lake. If I wanted to have a quiet conversation, I would go somewhere else. If you don't mind the noise, this is a fun place. The bar area extends outside. The cheese sauce is excellent. There was a decent selection of lunch options. Most dishes run $10 - $12. They had white and yellow rice. If you want a specific type, ask for it. It was fun watching guacamole being made for a party of approx 14 people. If you have a birthday celebration or special occasion, you can bring your own dessert. Four out of our party of five was happy with their selection. My family member wasn't expecting her dish to be spicy. I would just clarify while ordering to make sure I liked what what was served. There is reserved restaurant parking but the marina gets crowded on the weekend. Be aware of traffic as you enter/exit. Not everyone is as cautious as they should be. read more

The service was incredibly slow and our server, Sergio, did not check on us after we ordered for 45 minutes. Eventually we had to check up on our food since we had been. Once the food arrived after an hour, the portions were small and the steak was inedible. I got the huevos rancheros and it was just okay. Once we got our checks, the recommended tips ranged from 20-30%, which was beyond excessive. I would skip this place if you're in town. read more

If someone asked me where a good place to eat on the lake is I would not say this restaurant. This place wouldn't even cross my mind. The food is okay. My tacos looked great plated, but when I put them in my mouth they were luke warm. They cost almost $13 This place is in the crazy horse marina so they get a lot of people coming in off the lake to eat here. Today we came to eat here because it was raining & we wanted to get out of it. They have outdoor seating that is covered and a good bit of overhang so we asked to sit outside, and they said they weren't seating anyone outside because of the rain...umm, okay(?!) We ended up waiting for the rain to stop under their walkway & when it finally stopped we were able to sit outside. Which was nice. The view is pretty! But because they're right off the water I also found it odd that they don't allow dogs in their outside area. But maybe I'm just a huge animal lover so it's odd to me ‍ read more

I'd say as far as Mexican food goes by the lake - this is going to be tops. After a long day jet skiing my fiancee, dad and I were starving. We were staying at Bernard's Landing for the weekend so to Yelp I came to find someplace decent in the area to eat. I'm a health nut most days and wanted something with fresh ingredients. Not much around SML for lunch will fit that bill. This place is very nearby to Bernard's and was pretty highly recommended on Yelp so we decided to give it a try. At first when we pulled onto the Crazy Horse road I feared we'd pull up to an old building that was closed down and the restaurant would be gone but when we arrived it was open and we were greeted by a friendly man who led us down to the outdoor seating by the lake. It's a gorgeous view and the weather was very nice. We were promptly served very warm and yummy chips with salsa and white sauce. Our server was attentive, polite and very fast. We rarely waited for anything and when we asked for something it was very quickly provided. He was excellent. I ordered the table side guacamole which they asked if they could make it upstairs and bring down - fine by me. But they did ask about all the ingredients I wanted and the spice level just as they would if it were made table-side. It arrived quickly and was delicious - we tore it up. My dad ordered the mixed grill fajitas with chicken and steak and a ton of grilled peppers and onions. My fiancee ordered the carne astada tacos (he always does) and he absolutely raved about them. He is really picky about tacos and such since his grandmother from California is Mexican and made them when he was little but he was very impressed with their version and commented that the meat was thick and juicy and not tough or chewy as he's had before. He finished all three and didn't even touch his rice or beans (he said he needed to prioritize the space). lol. I ordered the spinach enchiladas which were served with black beans and white rice. The black beans were yummy and while I wish they had put a bit more spinach in the sad enchiladas - they were yummy. Our meal was very pleasant. We waited 40 minutes to get seated at half empty restaurant. The manager was yelling at people "no complaints, food takes 35 minutes" before we even got in the door...more like an hour and 35 minutes...beautiful location, amazingly poorly run, average food. The queso fundido and guacamole were decent, shrimp were supposed to be tail off, found tails in the sauce The manager could not pick up a table, but made sure to cater to a dog while people waited and sweated inside, outside. Can I live here please? They have a tequila bar, a beautiful view, boat dock, and Mexican food. What more could you ask for to enjoy a summer day on the water? We were seated very quickly and delivered waters almost immediately (thank you, we were parched!). We ordered margaritas and strawberry daiquiris as well and they were delicious (and strong!). We ordered arroz con pollo, beef tacos, and a burrito, as well as chips and queso. The chips and salsa were complimentary. Everything tasted great and we really enjoyed the service, which was attentive and helpful with suggestions. All portion sizes were big so consider splitting if you get full easily. I'd recommend this restaurant if you're in need of a food stop while out boating on the lake. Be sure to visit the gift shop downstairs for some goodies as well! read more

First visit we got made fun oh by waiter. Food was your average Mexican food, we gave it a second chance out of convenience. After waiting 20 minutes for a table, we were told that our table was ready but we couldn't be seated yet because the kitchen was backed up. I didn't quite understand the logic here since the restaurant was nearly empty. Then the hostess pointed at another table and said "they have been waiting over an hour for their food" so we left. This is a review for the Mexico Viejo Tequila Bar that opened at Bridgewater Marina this summer. We were so excited to have this restaurant in this area. We waited all summer for this place to open near the lake :) The Good: It's decorated well. There's seating outside that wraps around. The eating area is clean. The fried ice cream is actually fried - which we were super excited about, since it was the first time that we've fried ice cream that's actually fried and not just rolled around in cereal :) It was yummy. The tacos were delicious and they have taco Tuesday (the day we came), for $2/a taco. The tacos were delicious :) the waitress was nice, and apologetic when we told her there was a hair on my taco. The Bad: one of the 4 tacos I had had hair in it. It wasn't mine (I have blonde hair with black roots). The hair was a shorter black hair (about 1.5 inch long), and there was two or more of them together. We told our waitress and she told the manager (or owner, we didn't really know if he was the manager or the owner because he didn't come to our table to apologize or anything). Our waitress was told that she can ask the kitchen for another taco (I only had one left by this time). The bill came and it was not comped/reduced. The manager or owner (stood with his back toward us and never stopped by our table to apologize). The tortilla chips and salsa were bland - it's better at the other restaurant around. Conclusion: I would encourage you to go and try it out for yourself. I'm sure that the hair in our food incident is a rare occasion. We were disappointed at the manager or owner's lack of response to us (didn't stop by the table to apologize or offer comp for the hair in our food). As for us, we will not be back. The "Jumbo" margarita which costs $8 is about 10 ounces of margarita mix and the slightest hint of tequila. One flavor, lime. Rather disappointed. Probably the worst margarita Ive had. We waited an hour on what seemed like a very not busy night. Service was ok, not great. Prices were WAY too high for the portion sizes. $12 fish tacos was 2 small tacos. They tasted ok, bot great. Most of our orders were wrong or messed up. To sum up, margaritas sucked, service wasn't great, and the food was ok, but way over priced. A new resident on Smith Mountain Lake but we heard that Crazyhorse Marina had a great restaurant. We motored into their new guest docks. Even the older ones were being repaired for the season. In early May they had just opened and it was almost empty so I was skeptical about their menu. I ordered the Carnitas dinner on a chance because I haven't found good Carnitas since leaving Southern California. These were great! Crispy browned outside, tender moist inside. More than ample portions and excellent tastes in all our meals which included my wife's Spinach enchiladas. Our son and his girlfriend loved their Fajitas and Taco plates. I dined here with a group of 8 people over Memorial Day weekend and so we had to wait around 30 minutes to be seated. It was nice and convenient that we were able to take a boat here across the lake and dock it at the restaurant. The restaurant has two floors but the second floor offers a nice view of the lake. The first floor was blasting music which was a bit off-putting. Keep in mind that the second floor has limited seating and only has a few tables to fit a group larger than 6. We eventually decided to split up in order to be seated faster. All this aside, the staff was accommodating to our request and service for at least my table, was great. I ordered the chicken chimichangas. The shredded chicken inside the tortilla was cooked well and not dry. Everything on the plate tasted fresh and I was pleased with the overall flavor of the entree. The tortilla chips they start you off with and refill are also fresh and have a nice crunch to them. All in all, great food at a decent price. read more

Liked being able to park the boat and go inside to eat, waited about ten minutes before I had to ask someone about putting our name on the wait list, no hostess to acknowledge guests. Was told it would be a 15 minutes wait. Put name in and waited at the bar- excellent drinks. After waiting 25 minutes I asked the hostess about the status of our table, and was told "usually our wait is 2 hours, you're at the lake" which I understand, but we were told 15 minutes and there is no need for the attitude. The food made up for the poor introduction, and the girl who had the attitude earlier ended up being our waitress and she did a good job. Food was fast and top notch authentic Mexican food. My family and I will not be returning. The food was typical Mexican food but it was the experience that was so negative. I don't usually write reviews but felt this was necessary. We were waiting to order and heard a young man sitting with the wait staff yell and drop the f bomb. My husband asked him to stop because our young children were there. However he continued to use bad language while hanging out with the staff throughout our meal. We were later told that he was the owner's son. I just couldn't believe the utter lack of respect shown to us and other customers around us. If you don't care about repeat business what does that say about the general quality of the restaurant? I definitely will not be patronize any of their locations in the future. This is not how you should run a business. read more

We have gone there a few times since it's a good place for Mexican on the lake and accessible by boat. It seems to be very popular because there is usually a crowd and they don't seem to get in a hurry to seat you. Very, very good! We went here on Sunday of Memorial Day weekend and the place was pretty busy. Nevertheless, a friendly host greeted us quickly and seated us at a table overlooking the marina with a beautiful view of the lake. Complimentary chips, salsa, and white sauce arrived promptly; the salsa was very good, but The white sauce did not impress me because I thought was too sweet. I had the vaquero and the server gladly took my request to substitute beef for chicken. My other half had the seafood burrito. Both dishes arrived quickly just as we ordered them and both had spectacular flavor. Our server was friendly and attentive. The alcoholic beverages did seem higher-priced than I might expect, so I just stuck with water. The restroom was clean and well-stocked. This place gets five stars from me because of the good service and exceptional flavor. read more

I've eaten here many times and offered another one-star review. This place has consistently bad service and food. I recently ordered enchiladas, and asked the server to tell the kitchen to make them hot. On other occasions, they came out luke warm at best. The kitchen microwaved the plate so long, the pork looked like tree bark and the tortillas were like cardboard. It was disgusting! Visited this restaurant recently with a large group of people for some quick food and a round of drinks, while enjoying a day on the water at Smith Mountain Lake. We never did order food due to staff and management treating us poorly. As a group we decided to leave due to the poor relations. If we're not welcome in your establishment, say so and I'll gladly leave; but try to scam me by switching prices and terms of service and your opening yourself up to legal troubles buddy. I usually get the Arroz con Pollo or Chori Pollo but have had enchiladas and tacos. Everything I have had is good. Mexico Viejo is open every day. It's a great weekday lunch spot. It is located at Crazy Horse Marina. Guest docks are to the right of the gas dock and there is plenty of guest docks. By water, head up the Blackwater River. Just past marker B10A, turn right and enter the cove. You will see the marina tucked into the back of the cove to the left. By road turn onto Scruggs Road from VA Rte 122. It is on the right about 7 miles down Scruggs Road. Mexico Viejo is opening a place at the Bridgewater Complex. I can't wait ! read more

We are SML residents and have eaten here several times. In the last couple of years, the food has improved and is now a decent grade of Mexican food. Unfortunately, the service has deteriorated at the same time. Some of the waitstaff are hard workers and treat the customers well. Others are oblivious and some downright obnoxious to their customers. On our most recent visit (lunch midweek - not busy), we were ignored for several minutes by three separate waiters when we came in. I finally asked a waiter at the bar if there was a hostess. His response was "Do you SEE one? You just have to wait." Maybe I am old fashioned, but I thought waiters were trained to speak to customers ASAP with a simple, "someone will be with you shortly."
