I am going to tell you about two experiences. I have had at the El Cazador Mexican restaurant. The first time I went in there it was at 9 o'clock on a rainy evening. When I got in there, they refused to serve me because they said due to the rain they closed early. The sign on the door says they're open every night until 10 PM. I asked them to make an exception, and explain that I would be done eating before 10 PM, and they still declined to serve me. I was very annoyed because I got there a full hour before closing time, and they still would not serve me. Tonight I went in there about 8:40 PM. I ordered a taco salad that was very small, and very over priced for the portion size. At 9 PM on the dart two women came in to have dinner. They were promptly told that they were closed and would not be served. The customers begged to be allowed to order food and eat in the restaurant. The waiter relented, and allowed them to dine. I don't know what food they ordered, but they started off with two margaritas. This restaurant is either open until 10 PM at night or it is not. Somebody needs to get this straightened out and if they do close at 9 o'clock then those are the hours that should be put on the door, not 10 o'clock. But I can tell you this the food is not worth begging for, and the prices are high. The people that work there I don't think even speak English. I ordered a Diet Coke and I thought what I got was a watered down Diet Coke. I have to ask for a refill because nobody bothered to come over and asked me how everything was because they were too busy laughing and talking with each other. When I asked for a refill, I am quired about what the drink was, and I was told it was Pepsi and Coke. I later determined they don't sell Coke products. If a customer asks for Coke And they don't have it the customer should be informed accordingly. Based on my experience, the quality of the food, the portion size, and the service provided by the wait staff, I would not recommend this restaurant. read more

Unlike the El Cazador in Altavista, this establishment is clean and offers a creative menu with delicious food. I've had several dishes including a shrimp and chicken quesadilla and pollo ranchero. The portions are generous on modern square dishes. The chicken ranchero was served with visible bits of what had to be freshly chopped jalapeno peppers. The refried beans could have stood on their own they were so flavorful--not bland or overly salted. The main trend at El Cazador that I praise above all else is the freshness and variety of the meals they offer. This is two-fold. First, there have always been interesting specials or offerings as opposed to your taco, fajita, burrito. Second, the plates are garnished with HEALTHY foods like avocado, jalapeno, or lime. Lynchburg would really benefit if El Cazador planted a restaurant here but I fear that won't happen because the locals are so stunningly infatuated with La Carreta. El Cazadir is the only place open in Gretna after 9PM I could find other than Micky D's. The service is great and so was the meal. As always, I ordered the Chicken Fajita and it was great. The dining area is clean and service is good. read more

I was pleasantly surprised by the food at El Cazador. The service was nice and the food pretty good. We tried a quesadilla which was good, and some tasty chicken fajitas. While it's not I credibly authentic, it isn't tex-mex either and the flavor was good and the food was fresh. Definitely one of the better--if not best--options in town!!! This is the best Mexican food I've ever had and I'm 39 years old. The staff treat me like family and surround my table when I come in. I'm a big tipper everywhere I go but I make sure to give them extra love. They remember me and ask my family about me if I haven't been there in a while. Treat them right and they will treat you like a celebrity. The food is the most important part. Everything I've ever ordered has been super fresh and tastes amazing. I love the people there. I have always since I was a child loved El Cazador from the one in Altavista to the one in Gretna but my past two experiences in Gretna was terrible! They were rude time before last then I give them another try and decide to eat outside since it was an empty table but was told I couldn't because someone called the table in......how can you tell someone the can't sit at a empty table because it is occupied????? Friendly wait staff and very attentive. Restaurant is clean and comfortable. The bar is small and only sits maybe 5 people, but they do have liquor and different flavors of margaritas ready to be served. I like to go outside and sit under the umbrellas when the weather is nice. Food is fair. I like it much spicier for my taste. The nachos are ok, but I was expecting green peppers, chilis, onions and lots of spices (that's how they usually look). Not the case here. I was kind of disappointed on that, but it was overall okay. This is hands down the best place to eat in Gretna. The waiters are very friendly and I know most of them by name now. Every dish I've ate here is much better than the Chatham or Altavista El Cazador locations. Mixed drinks and beer can be a bit pricey, but they usually run something good on special. read more
