Our son will enter as an 8th grader for the 2014-2015 school year, transferring out of his current school district and accelerated academic program for we fully trust that JMF will be a more full scope educational environment. Our son has played Little League baseball for years and has come to enjoy and respect the game and desires to learn more, do more. While it is a trek from our home, am moving forward in FAITH that is a worthwhile journey to travel! I could not give it a 5 yet because our son has not started school yet. The teachers have embraced our family and the other parents in my son's classes are friendly with us. It's too bad that some have had a bad experience here. I haven't been involved with the PTA beyond volunteering at the fall carnival, etc. so I can't speak to the nature of the PTA members. Elizabeth Wahl is a good principal and she reached out to me when my son was in 1st grade to help me get him into Discovery Club. My advice: take advantage of what this school has to offer academically. If you're feeling like the PTA is exclusive and homogeneous, bring a friend to the meetings! This school has a lot to offer: STORM (Special Team of Role Models); Ms. Messner is one of the MOST AMAZING educators around town; and the people in the office CARE about the well-being of the students! This school is rated a 9 or 10 by www.greatschools.org, focus on what they have to offer academically.

He was retained in grade K after we believed he sincerely had some type of issue since he only scribbled on papers, couldn't write well, wasn't able to read or put words/sounds together -- albeit he is a genius in math.He counts up to 200 and is 5... I took him to our Native American clinic for a screening and his pediatrician who didn't do his pre-K screening (vision and hearing) noted he hears fine, doesn't appear to have ADHD, and has a hard time seeing. I was shocked, a hard time seeing? They believed he was around 20/30 or 20/40 since he did poorly on the eye chart. Bless his pediatrician's office because he could only ready the 40 and 50's at the eye doctors without help, so they were very correct. So he has poor vision in his left eye where he needs nearly a +3.00 lense and his right eye is overcompensating for the issue and is also weakened where he needs a +1.50 in that eye. With his glasses on he clearly writes his name and can color... because he can SEE! Mariemont only wanted to blame some type of developmental issue or a hearing issue as his problem. I remember at one point being told the other kids had preschool and because he didn't that might be the issue. I stated preschool was out of our budget and I was reminded that the neighborhood is wealthier so the kids go to preschool... So their kids were automatically seen as better because they were rich and white. You'd think someone in the process would have tested his eyesight if he had a problem reading. It seems so, DUH! now but I am a first time parent dealing with an uptight school but they do this everyday so there is no excuse. I continue to state his teacher was awesome and did what he could but their administration and even other parents are the nightmare there. I am on the fence for him returning I can't do to it him even though they are considered a "good school" they are not a good school for someone with a mixed ethnic background whose parents don't net 100k+ a year.

I have to say the bad reviews are 100% accurate. Our student had no issues academically or with regards to conduct and completed primary grades in another Catholic school, we are familiar with the system. This is an honest review sharing points that I find valuable to know ahead of time as this is a huge commitment for families Let's be clear, there is no "brotherhood" here. This is a study in what politics and donations can do in EVERY aspect. If you are not donating (in addition to tuition), alumni or "legacy" you should expect nothing. We realized this a few months in and gave our child time to come to it on his own. Six months later, we left. It's a hard lesson..learn from ours. Here is what they do not tell you: *Not all families pay full tuition-so be prepared to take it on the chin subsidizing others while they continue to ask you for more. *The school is proud of how many families travel from all over the Sacramento area to attend-yet they do not respect families time. I'm not sure who can handle fluctuating start and end times each week, but it got old really quick. *Additionally, you will have additional trips to the school numerous times a year to satisfy other requirements for performing arts participation -when your child is not in performing arts. This may not sound like much, but it added up to extra HOURS for our family. *There are some really good teachers there, but a few that shared their views on racial issues too frequently. *A staff member was inclined to call and try and pick a fight to remind us that we signed and agreed to our son participating in what the school believes in when we questioned the safety of a required "volunteer" activity around homeless. A child is not a car contract , and parents never relinquish their rights by signing their kid up for school. If you are familiar with Catholic education, most schools acknowledge they are the secondary, behind parents in forming students. That is not the case here. *Be prepared that if you are not doing the extras above, your child will not see any real athletic opportunities for sports. These spots and spotlights are reserved for donors/alumni, etc. *They say they do not offer athletic scholarships. Yet, many kids are there because the school enticed them $ and openly share the details with other students. Several sleep in class and do not appear to want to be there or understand the opportunity given to them. * No surprise, drugs are on campus and the admin does a decent job addressing it. * They have no tolerance cheating policy which is great. But we lost count of how many messages we saw other students asking to copy our students' work. We thought we did our homework and jumped through every hoop-and for us it was a joke. We spent over 3 hrs a day commuting, + $ and we have no idea what it was for. Save your money for your child's college.

We decided to give one more look at Catholic Schools in our area to see if there were any schools that had a tuition we could afford. We stumbled upon Holy Cross Academy. We called and made an appointment to meet with the principal Mrs. MacDonald. Mrs. MacDonald is amazing! She took the time to show us around the school, and tell us all about the educational and religious formations at Holy Cross. She made a huge impact on our decision to submit an application and sending the kids to Holy Cross. After sending our oldest son to Holy Cross for one year, we knew this was the school we wanted all of your kids to attend. Holy Cross has an AMAZING staff. They are all caring and really put the kids first. Our 2 oldest now attend (TK & K) and the baby will go when he gets school age. This school is all about community. Their student learning expectations: Lead, Love, Learn and Make a Difference are infectious - you as a parent want to get involved in making the school and even more positive environment. I even had classmates whose family members died and they were made to push on like everything is normal! They don't take into consideration what people have been through. Instead, they think that they are God or that God has given them some sort of task to break others; some who have already been beat down by life. I have so many bad/near illegal/horror stories to tell about this place its not even funny. Also, I got the sense that the faculty here are highly racist especially in their favoritism towards certain racial groups or even lighter skinned people in those racial groups. I went from the Oakland campus (highly diverse) to small town (El Dorado HIlls) that clearly had little to no experience with minorities. All of that because they wanted a nicer area to be in? There are plenty of place that they could have chosen that were way more diverse and of course we had no say in the move. We were practically forced to move! Anyway, the school has got it together. It's been such a different experience from the schools we came from (also 9/10 schools east bay). I felt confident they were well taken care of and was always assured of it given the constant communication and updates of schools happenings. Aside from being well organized and having excellent communication, the staff is SUPER friendly. From the office to the home teachers to security and to the building maintenance that sanitizes the school down - EVERYONE was so nice! Anyway, this week they went back to school full time (HOORAY!) my kids home teacher was literally in tears seeing all her students together and that really moved me. This school genuinely cares about your children and their well being. Also plus that the campus is nice clean and has that nice Lake view - hence the name.
