Tipping culture is out of hand, but what happened to me at El Señor Frogs truly takes the flan. My 10-year-old daughter had just done great at her jiu-jitsu tournament, so we went out for a celebratory lunch. The total on my receipt came to a reasonable $33.29. However, minutes later I received a text alert from my bank saying I had actually been charged $39.95. I checked my receipt again--nowhere did it show $39.95. It only listed the $33.29 total. When I asked my server, "Laura," about the difference, she insisted something must be wrong with my bank. But my bank notifications are accurate every time my card is swiped, and I believe she added a 20% tip without telling me and hoped I wouldn't notice since the printed receipt didn't show it. Ironically, I had planned to leave a tip even larger than 20%, but after that, absolutely not. No way, José. I strongly encourage future diners to double-check their bank statements or notifications after eating here. That taco combo lunch special might end up costing more than you think. El Senor Frogs is one of our go-to Mexican restaurants, but we prefer to get our food togo. The parking lot is tiny and the restaurant looks like an old house converted into a restaurant and it could use a facelift. But the food is always consistent and the service is great. The staff is super friendly. We usually order a number one and we always have leftovers for the next day. One thing I don't love is that they charge for chips and salsa when you order togo, I think it would be nice if they offered a small bag and small container of salsa with your meal. They're free and unlimited when you dine in. I would likely order extra anyway because I like their gravy and cheese. They have a small stand with Lafufu's, Stanley cups, and bracelets. So beware if you bring a kiddo with you, they're going to see them! read more

If I could give NEGATIVE stars, I would. A few people claim this place serves authentic Mexican food, but it's far from authentic--I'd honestly rather eat at Taco Bell. I will never come back here, not only because the food tasted awful, but also because the service was absolutely horrible. Our waitress had a terrible attitude. Instead of being attentive, she was snapping her fingers at us while rushing to take orders, and even tried to snatch a plate away from my friend because she thought it was the wrong dish--even though my friend kept insisting it was hers. We never received the tortillas that were supposed to come with our meal, we weren't offered refills, and nobody ever checked in to see if we needed anything. The food itself was inedible. My husband ended up taking his plate to go just so he wouldn't look rude leaving it untouched. His carne asada was a big, gray, unseasoned slab of meat that looked boiled instead of grilled. The refried beans were dry and flaky. My $25 fajita plate was nothing but giant chunks of tomato, onions, and bell peppers, with maybe five or six tiny pieces of chicken. The chicken too, was bland. After reading other reviews that mention the same type of aggressive service, I can confidently say I will never be going back. read more

Wow! I can't say enough good things about the Menudo at Senor. Frog on Pacific Avenue in Stockton. I have Menudo when ever it is on the menu. I'm 83 years old and have been to more Mexican restaurants than I can count and this is the best ever. They serve it everyday not just Saturday and Sunday. The atmosphere here is really great. This is a Stockton institution. While it's not your most authentic Mexican place, you get consistent good food and a lot of it. A true family business, they treat you like family. My go to is the #3- it is a combo dish with chile verde, chile colorado, chile relleno, chicken enchilada, chicken taco and rice and beans. They serve it hot and fast. My 2nd choice is the camarones al mojo de ajo (garlic shrimp). Garlicky and buttery, it's delicious. They recently added homemade tortillas on weekends. Definitely not what I expected in the inside compared to the outside.when you first walk in, there is the bar area and few tables for dinning, it looks small at first glance but there is also tables in the back room too and a patio! So I thought that was pretty neat. We were asked to find any seat that we'd like and given menues. We were served tortilla chips and dip while we waited for our food. The dip was a 6/10 for me. But our food was 10/10! Everything came out better than I thought it would and the portions was huge! I couldn't finish my plate and my partner couldn't finish his wet burrito. We've celebrated birthdays, graduations, and baby showers, always supporting their business. But after last night? We will never return. And before anything is said--this is NOT defamation. We are not twisting facts. We simply want the public to know how the owner's daughter treats customers while on the clock. WHY STOCKTON BUSINESSES FAIL It's not just rising prices--it's hiring unprofessional, untrained employees who ruin a business's reputation. And in this case? That employee was the owner's daughter. She represented her family's business with aggression, racism, and outright unprofessionalism--right in front of my children. RED FLAGS FROM THE START Two customer's kids ran out of the kitchen--a clear health & safety violation. The staff was overwhelmed but instead of handling it professionally, they became short-tempered and aggressive. My mom stepped aside to let a customer pass, and the waiter snapped at her, assuming she was trying to sit down too soon. THE SERVICE WAS A DISASTER The waitress had an attitude from the start. I asked how her night was, and she responded rudely. I tried to lighten the mood, saying, "You're coming off a little spicy." She fired back, "You're just reading my vibe wrong." The waiter misheard my order 3 times and brought tea with no ice and a half cup of ice on the side instead of fixing it. We asked for sugar, and he acted annoyed, tossing packets onto the table. Then came the surcharge issue--we had NEVER been charged for this before. Arthur rudely said, "I'll go ask," acting as if we were bothering him. At that point, we had enough and decided to leave. THE OWNER'S DAUGHTER MADE IT WORSE When I asked for names to report the experience, the waitress (the owner's daughter) lost it. She refused to give her name and suddenly threatened to call the police. She called and LIED, claiming we came in to start trouble. My mother asked, "What are you talking about?" and she smugly responded, "It's okay, they're recording too." At this point, I was already recording. Then, the moment that changed everything: I told her, "You look like you're under the influence of something. You're really tweaking right now." Her response? "You are a rude Black man." IN FRONT OF MY CHILDREN. My mother immediately called her out, "A rude Black man?" Instead of apologizing, she DOUBLED DOWN, saying, "Well, what should I call him?" Meanwhile, TWO separate groups of customers LEFT after seeing this unfold. PHYSICAL ESCALATION & POLICE INVOLVEMENT She got in our faces, trying to force us out. Both my mom and I had to tell her not to touch us. She grabbed a menu and smacked my phone while I was recording. George, the cook, came out and apologized--he knew this was wrong. At this point, my mom called 911. While on the phone, she described the waitress, and that's when the waitress came around AGAIN, clapping her hands, trying to force us out. She yelled, "This is my mother's restaurant!" I told her, "Your mother will be embarrassed by this." Her response? "That's the mind manipulation." The police arrived a few minutes later. They took statements from both sides. They asked if my mother wanted to press charges--she declined, not because it wasn't serious, but because we know how these things play out. We left cash on the table for what we consumed, so they couldn't accuse us of anything. WHY THIS BUSINESS WILL FAIL Stockton businesses aren't failing just because of prices--they fail because they hire unprofessional, unqualified employees who scare away customers. Hiring people with no professionalism ruins businesses. Allowing employees to act however they want ruins reputations. Thinking customers will stay no matter what ruins loyalty. At the end of the day, this restaurant will be its own downfall. Businesses that hire unqualified, uneducated people who ruin their reputation from the inside out will NEVER last. The fact that this woman is the daughter of the owner makes it even worse--because if this is the best representation of their business, then this place is already done. Being a visitor to Stockton we were not sure where to eat, but doesn't Mexican food always sound good? Our first choice was a bit pricier and was booked all evening so we were concerned that finding a good place to eat and being able to accommodate 13 people might be a problem. Lucky for us there is a little place called El Senor Frog's. The service kept us happy with plenty of chips and salsa, everyone always had chips and fresh salsa in front of them. For drinks I recommend Michelada for adults and the strawberry horchata for the kids. Food was really good overall. Pozole soup was revered by our friends and the burritos were great in size and in flavor. I had the Frogs Feast which had a wonderfully flavored meat: shrimp, ribeye, and chicken. Not a lot of any one meat but there was about even amounts of each. Each bite just as tasty as the next. I wish there was more ribeye!! Great bonus if you are a niners fan (but I won't ruin the surprise) you will have to check it out for yourself. I recommend this restaurant to any and all. Pork & Chicken Flautas- 5/5 Authentically Mexican spices marinade the meats with Refried beans and Spanish rice. Very tasty and delicious. Pork Tamales - 5/5 The masa was prepared perfectly. The sauce was spiced just right and the pork tender and delicious. And excellent selection. There is indoor and outdoor seating when the weather gets warmer. The service is excellent. Our servers were friendly, helpful and kept our water glasses full. El Senor Frog's was established in 1994 and is family owned and operated, with the common goal of providing excellent service. We tried the carnitas very good however, the rice was aweful was not authentic mexican rice. It was a big clump however they did have one of the best homemade flour tortillas I've had it is dissapointing though when a mexican restuarant charges for extra!! They did not have a full service bar only beer. The staff very friendly expecially to the regulars our waiter needs improvement not to quick lacking promptness dont like to wait for things. What a shocking surprise! I read reviews online for this restaurant, and it had one of the highest ratings for the area. When we got there, we almost didn't go in because it looked small from the front, but it opened into the best surprise of great food, magnificent service, and more space and ambiance than I could have imagined. The waitress for us was like one of the best moms on earth- so fun, so organized, and extra kind! The bean dip was so great that I almost ate too much before the fajitas. Chips and fantastic salsa were equally great. The quality of the guacamole was nothing less than the best. If you're in the area, there are many great reasons for stopping by!
