On a Wednesday, we stopped by H Brothers for lunch. Located in downtown Escondido, this bar and…read morerestaurant was recommended to me by one of my Yelp friends. We found free parking on the street a block or two down from the restaurant. Service (4/5): You order at the counter and then they bring your food to you. A couple of things stand out to me about their service. I was looking at the menu and was about to order. Someone behind me cut in line without asking if I was ready to order. The lady working noticed this and asked me to order first. Humanity still exists! They also check on your periodically even though this isn't true table service which is a nice touch. On the flip side, they did try and upsell me to add bacon bits to my dish which I was all for until I saw it was a $3.50 upcharge. I asked them to remove it. A little too steep. Ambiance (4/5): My type of restaurant. Casual with some charm. We sat at a table across from the bar. They have some cool decor, too. No complaints. Drinks (4/5): I had a beer flight because I often can't say no to a flight. I love the variety and being able to try new beers, especially when I'm traveling. While they don't have a huge selection, they had just enough beers that were interesting for me to take the plunge. Food (4/5): I did the country poutine which comes with fries, gravy, fried chicken bites, and green onions. I'm a sucker for loaded fries so I couldn't say no. Especially for this twist on a classic poutine. Generous portion size as I had hoped. A little more chicken would have been nice, but outside of that, very solid.

The location has a pretty extensive menu written in chalk on the walk, and it's easy to read. There are choices of sandwiches, salads and a lot of great food in-between. After taking a minute to decide we went with the Southwest Chicken Salad ($16.99) as well as the Hawaiian Chicken Sandwich ($15.99) with a side of hushpuppies. The sauce on the salad was flavorful with just a bit of zest, and they gave us extra so that was really cool. It's a really comfy place to eat with a little bit of a Louisiana feel to it. For good food served by good people, this is the place!

We tried Upper East for the first time on Mothers Day for brunch, as they had a special that…read moresounded delish and it's my fave, Crab Cake Benedict. The good: Great service from our server, lovely atmosphere, seated quickly on even on Mothers day. Salad and basil dressing were great. The crab cake was good. The unacceptable: The most important part of eggs benedict is the poached eggs, that means cooked whites, runny yolk. 2 of us ordered the dish, and of the 4 poached eggs, three were so overcooked, the yolks were hard boiled, crumbly and dry. I let the server know and asked that they just bring out new eggs, no need to remake the plate. over 15 minutes later, (so ow we had cold crab cakes) they dropped off a small plate with 4 genuinely undercooked poached eggs, they looked like soup. they were a literal puddle. The manager came by to ask if we had out eggs yet a couple moments before they were dropped off, we said no and he and said I'll take care of one of these for you. I don't expect free meals, and I rarely send food back, but this seemed pretty petty. Soupy eggs that took an extraordinarily long time (the restaurant was not at capacity at all). When I received the bill, there was a 15% discount on the eggs benedict. I get tight margins, but at least make the dish correctly please. The hollandaise sauce was good, the server very sweet and friendly (and of course we tipped him 20%, food is not his fault) but I doubt I would try this place again if that is how the rectify substandard meals. They did give me a lovely flower!

Happy hour was M-Fri 3-6PM But we were there for the world cup Mexico versus Korea. So happy hour was the entire time. The mini churros and wings were my fave. It was made just right :) the fried pickles were very sour. Reminds me of the del Mar fair food.. but no line or wait! Their brussel sprout elote was interesting, a bit dry. I would pass on this next time.

We called to add a couple extra people, and then those people didn't show; they rolled with the punches. The table was set when we got there. Service throughout was friendly, prompt, over and above. Ambiance was great, in a very important way: There was nice music, but you could hear yourself think! Nobody had to repeat themselves a million times. Perfect sound level for a group our size. But the food was the absolute star of the show. Literally everything was perfect. For shareable appetizers, we got both the trio and the mezze plate. It was basically hummus flights, with pita triangles and multicolored carrots. All the hummus types were delicious. But a special shout-out to the truffle hummus--it was divine. It was very truffle-y, but it was also very light and creamy. Somehow that's not a combo I expected. Next, I'm already a falafel fan, but good *Lord* their falafel was unreal. Some kind of perfect crispiness on the outside and soft flakiness inside that I've never experienced before in falafel. I asked the server what he'd recommend, and he said beef kebab. I got the beef kebab. He was not wrong. The meat itself was sumptuous. And I just moved from Texas, where every other backyard BBQ has someone smoking their brisket for 18 hours. This was the kind of cook where even the marbling melts in your mouth. Even the carrots were good, I don't know what to tell ya. 10/10.
