Tonight MexiQuest continues with a trip to Taqueria Los Jimadores, a little stop on West Airy…read moreStreet in Norristown. Los Jimadores is, by far, the "dive-iest" Mexican spot I've been to so far in Norristown... it's small, with plastic tables equipped only with a roll of paper towel and a bottle of Tapatio. There's no printed menu to speak of; you order from a small sign on the left wall with four entries: Tacos, Quesadillas, Tortas, or Especial del Dia (Special of the Day). Each item can be ordered with one of a handful of meats: bistek, pollo, asada, adobada, cabeza, and a last one I wasn't familiar with and can't recall the specific name of. There are no prices displayed, so one has to either ask or guess.
I started with an order of three tacos from the friendly and helpful waitress, a bistek (steak), pollo (chicken), and adobada (spicy pork). The tacos arrived quickly, but there were no complimentary chips while I waited. The meal was served on a styrofoam plate with two plastic squirt bottles, one roja salsa and one verde salsa. The tacos were average size for the area.
Taste wise, they were very good, arguably on par with Taqueria Mexico Lindo and just below El Rincon in taste and quality. The provided salsas were quite tasty, the verde being a standout, cool and just spicy enough. Still hungry, I ordered another two tacos, another adobada (which was a standout of the first three) and an asada (another type of steak). The asada was probably the worst of the four types I tried, but it wasn't bad, just not as good as the other choices.
When the check came, it totalled $9. I guess that makes each taco around $1.75 unless I'm doing my math wrong, which is not at all a bad price for good quality tacos.
Ultimately I was torn between three and four stars for Los Jimadores. While the service and food quality was excellent, the selection and sheer dive atmosphere could stand some improvement. In the end taste and experience won out, and I can safely say the Los Jimadores stands amongst the best in Norristown Mexican eating spots.
