I ordered my food to go and waited 40 minutes for a bag filled with grease. I ordered pastor tacos and was disappointed they not only forgot to add cilantro and onion but they were so greasy the tortilla was soggy and leaked all over the bag even though they were wrapped. I took one bite anyways and the meat was undercooked and actually made me sick. I'm also Hispanic so I basically grew up always eating Mexican food and this place is truly authentic.. homemade tortillas are the best, steak and chicken is good, and the service was really good too. Ask for verde salsa if you want some spicy sauce. The chips at the start are good too, but the salsa in the start can be better. The mornings are the best though, best breakfast in town. I have to give it 5 stars because it's rare to find a really good Mexican restaurant going up north. read more

This was my first visit to El Rodeo in Lampasas. I really dislike giving poor reviews to independent restaurants (even when earned), but I sure love giving EXCELLENT reviews to places that really deserve it! I went mid-morning on a weekday and was unsure what to order, but I really wanted a late breakfast. Their menu was very comprehensive and impressive. (I even asked to see the lunch menu to review other options.) I love really good Chilaquiles and I was very pleased with what I received! The Chilaquiles were very freshly made (as expected) with red sauce (green is the other option). I asked for chicken to be added for $.74 additional and the chef was very liberal with the freshly grilled chicken breast. I was expecting some shredded chicken that had been sitting for awhile, so it was another pleasant surprise! It came with a very generous amount of jack cheese on top and lots of crispy tortilla strips. (I normally will ask for some salsa to spice things up, but this dish was so flavorful, I did not need the extra salsa.) The plate had delicious refried beans & a good amount of fried potatoes. In addition, I was given 2 freshly made flour tortillas. I ate a good deal of the breakfast, but had to ask for a "to go" container to take the rest of it with me. Heated up the next day it was almost as good as dining El Rodeo! Service was fast and excellent and the waitress was well informed and checked back with me multiple times! One of the most interesting things about going on a road trip is seeing how the socioeconomic environment seeps into the local tourism. Not in the way that when you visit a place like Santa Fe that everything comes with green chilies, or how everything is "super-sized" in Dallas, but the interactions, the fellow patrons, the general conversation. I went on a work trip to a local jail, and after the 3 hour drive and 4 hours in the jail, I was starving. Through the hills and the plains, I saw Tex-Mex eatery after Tex-Mex eatery, and Storm's... Those appeared to be my options. Fearing that El Rodeo was my last chance for miles, I stopped in. At 1PM on a Wednesday, it was staffed with young people who were certainly recent High School graduates. The young man who served my professional counterpart and I was kind, and had that small town, previous local sports star vibe. The menu was extensive, but they were really repetitive. For instance, the lunch enchiladas were listed as 4 options, but what essentially changed was the sauce topping. I subscribe to the "least of the evils" selection in settings like this. With few real fish options that didn't also involve other meat, I chose the cheese enchiladas verde, which came with a drink for $6.99 at lunch. It was...good. Not great..more than you might expect. However, the chips and salsa were exceptional. The chips were quite like El Fenix, and the salsa had a kick. As I left I heard the staff pining about trying to get back into college, about budgeting and savings, about being a single parent, and where they were going to drink over the weekend, it took me back to my hometown. Smdh I ordered 1st and they messed it up,but I have to wait. My Co workers tacos were super burnt and was unable to eat her tacos, BUT Cheyenne didn't seem to care. So when checking out I told the cashier about how rude Cheyenne was and she stated shes just overwhelmed with her tables. Just left this restaurant, we have been several times and usually love it but today was awful!! Right off the hot sauce was so salty we couldn't eat it we told the waiter and he did nothing. I have eaten at "El Rodeo" a few times and it is pretty good. I've been in for breakfast and for lunch. The last time I went I had the "Molcajete" (pronounced Mole-Ka-Heh-tey) and Oh-MAN was it good! I looked up molcajete online and apparently that word is actually for the bowl that it is served in, but the food was darn good! Imagine a scalding-hot, lava rock looking bowl, that stays hot for up to an hour later, filled with chicken and beef fajita, onions, peppers, tomatoes, and covered in melted cheese (which by the way, STAYS melted because of the intense heat of the bowl). Served with tortillas, rice, beans, shredded lettuce, and pico. I will DEFINITELY be getting that dish again. The Molcajete is kind of expensive, unless you get it on special like I did, but it is well worth the money ($10). I recommend El Rodeo and I think you will enjoy it too! read more

Went to El Rodeo for dinner with my son. We seated ourselves with no wait. My son ordered the three enchilada special for only $6.99 and I ordered the Carne Asada for $9.99. We both had water with lemon to drink to keep the cost down since he was the one paying for dinner. As usual, their salsa is very tasty and not too spicy. We tore through the first bowl of salsa and chips pretty quickly. The waiter brought us fresh chips and two bowls of salsa! My carne asada was tasty, but was in several pieces. Usually it comes as one piece of meat. The meal also came with rice and refried beans. My son enjoyed his enchiladas. The food wasn't spectacular, but was a good value for the price. Noteworthy, was the lady at the table next to ours who kept loudly whistling for another margarita. She already seemed to have had quite a bit as she was pretty loud and obnoxious and was slurring her words. I was pleased to see that El Rodeo did the responsible thing and refused to serve her more alcohol. She didn't seem to get the message and whistled loudly again for another margarita. I refuse to give this place a one star rating, it was disgusting. I have lived in central Texas and have ate all kinds of Mexican food, this is by far the worst. Where to start, the service sucked, had to ask for refills 3 times as the wait staff walked by and looked at our empty glasses. We ordered teas and queso . The queso never arrived. We waited 45 minutes to get our food and to be honest they could have kept it. My daughter ordered child's enchilada plate, the enchilada was cold to the touch and tasted terrible. Between the bad service, meals being brought to the table cold, and mistakes on the orders, El Rodeo now is off the rotation. Now I'm on the search again for a new Mexican restaurant in Lampasas that is better than a TV dinner. Yes, I do think I can get microwaveable meals at H-E-B that are better. The only reason El Rodeo gets more than one star is because they have items like quail still on the menu. Technically I would have given them only one star because without the quail, they would get zero/zip/nada stars. But alas, Yelp has a 1 star minimum, so El Rodeo limps in with 2 stars. read more
