I don't throw around 5 stars lightly, but Aji Rocoto Peruvian Restaurant earned it. Also known as El Rocoto but BEST PERUVIAN Food My wife is Peruvian, so we're picky as hell about this kind of food. We randomly found this place, and it blew us away. The Parihuela de Mariscos is hands down the best seafood soup I've had. Deep flavor, fresh, and not some watered-down version--you can taste the effort in every bite. Then the Choros a la Chalaca... I've never been a mussels guy, but this dish changed that. Sweet onions, tomato, lime--it just hits perfectly. No bullshit, we were fighting over the last one. We've only been once, but I already know we're going back until we've tried everything on the menu. Yeah, the inside could use a little more personality--but that's not why you go here. You go for the food, and the food delivers. If you're anywhere near Bountiful, don't sleep on this spot. read more

I don't know Spanish and I am completely unfamiliar with Peruvian cuisine. I never know what I'm ordering and don't always recognize everything on the plate. Sometimes there are green noodles (??) and the white sauce is the spiciest one of all. But I've never been disappointed. I may not know what it is but it's delicious. I do, however, always get my food to go because the dining room leaves a lot to be desired. read more

Hard to believe this place has been here for close to 6 years and my first time noticing it when next door to Boba World. Food was great, the shrimp chowder, the Seco de res (cilantro beef), and the ceviche. Didn't care too much for the chicken and noodles, and their papa a la huancaina. They made everything from scratch and fresh to order, took about 30 minutes and was well worth the wait! Will come back again when in Bountiful most likely when next door. :-) read more

You know it's good when there's not a drop of food left on your plate at the end of the meal! I have never really had much Peruvian food (being half Colombian I ate mostly Colombian food growing up), but I was excited to see yucca and platanos on the menu so I knew I would be fine. We ordered the yucca to start, I suggested the Lomo Saltado for my fiancé based on fellow reviewers and I ordered the Pollo alla Plancha for myself with platanos instead of the French fries. Yucca was delectable cooked perfectly with the crispy outside and soft center. The dipping sauce had a little kick to it but it was a nice compliment to the yucca and they served it with a side of pickled onions that were spicy (fiancé loved it). I'm so used to just eating the yucca plain so it was a nice change and it was a great presentation. The Lomo Saltado was salty but that's to be expected when it is in its name! Fiance loved the dish and the rice and fries broke up the dish and its saltiness. The Pollo alla plancha was incredible. The chicken was pounded thin and grilled perfectly with light seasoning. The steamed rice was delicious and cooked so well it makes me so jealous I can never figure out how to make it at home!!! The platanos were amazing. Brought me home and reminded me of all the meals my abuelita used to make. We also ordered the Inca Kola with dinner. If you've never had it, it tastes like a cream soda DumDum but not like regular cream soda drinks. It's delicious but sweet just so you know in advance and aren't expecting a Coca-Cola type drink. Another hidden gem in Bountiful and open on Sunday! Yes this is the sister restaurant to the one in West Valley city of the same name. First, apologies to the lack of photos, we pretty much ravaged the food when it it our table. The plantains were the smaller sweeter ones although ours weren't that sweet. The salchipapas is exactly what it says it is, sausages and french fries. Ignore the fact that it's from the kids menu, they were delicious especially with the selection of sauces for dipping. I also had a hard time deciding between Chicha morada and maracuya, a couple of specialty drinks. They gave me a sample of each to decide, very nice of them. Both were very delicious so it was hard to decide, I settled on the chicha morada, yum. We ended the night with some alafajores. While they weren't perfect looking, they looked decent and had a subtle caramel flavor. But that's pretty much how the place is, they don't spend all their time on making it perfect and pretty, they make it delicious and authentic. If it is the first time you eat there, I would recommend you to get 'combinado marino' you will get 3 different options in one, and if you don't want to spend more than $13 you can be there at noon and ask for 'Menu', they offer like 2 or 3 options for you to choose, so you will get soup, main dish, and soda(refill included). read more

The food was ok but the restaurant and bathrooms were filthy. The paint on the floor was pealing and pieces of paint were standing up like old potato chips around the edges . Mopping or a broom would have knocked down the pealing paint but around the edges it was nasty. To bad because the food was ok but I wonder how the kitchen looked where they prepared my food yuk! There is a whole menu here of Peruvian delicacies. Everything you could ever want in an epicurean relationship with that country. Or at least most everything. So I'm kinda disappointed that I had already eaten when I arrived, and we only had room for a little bit of salty and a few sweets. After enjoying some noodles next door, a group of us popped in for a late night sweet run. Here was this whole menu of delicious sounding items--the chicken, especially--and all we did was order a few alfajores and fried plantains, and a plate called salchipapas which is simply salchichas + papas. That's hot dogs and french fries, and I have no idea if that's even a Peruvian dish, or just something that they put on their kids menu. Either way it was late night magic. Look, I'm not saying that indulging in the treats part of the menu is bad. In fact, I love me a good dessert. I could have dessert two or three or four times a day (if my poor body would allow it--I'm not as young as I used to be) and I'm definitely very good at dessert. I'm a dessert boss, if I do say so myself. Ordering. Making. Eating. But I'm just pretty darn sad that the focus for me here was JUST dessert. So many other wonderful items on the menu, and I didn't really get to experience any of them. The good news is that in this case, I know right where to find these guys and the whole menu. So if I can get back there, I'm going fully hungry. And I'm showing some self-restraint and waiting for the dessert. But when I've explored that menu, tasted everything I've ordered, and feel already happy as can be, I'm definitely going back to the dessert menu as the proverbial caramel on the alfajor, burnt sugar on the flan, and icing on the cake. read more

Friday around noon, party of 2 was no problem. Clean and easy to understand menu. Appreciated the descriptions, since I am unfamiliar with Peruvian food. Ordered Milianese de pollo, chufa de pollo, yucca, and saltada de carne. Yucca was well presented and the garnish was perfectly marinated. Sauce on that plate was not what I expected, but not bad. Saltado was great. Meat marinated and grill nicely for flavor and texture. Didn't find and mystery meat. Noodles were generic but cooked well. Chufa satisfied and was flavorful. I liked it all and took some home. I'd definitely come back. Service was average. Didn't know whether to seat myself or wait, still don't know if you order at the register or if the server comes to us. Good took 15 minutes. read more

The food seems to be good (Just by looks) However I was very disappointed when I get to taste it. The price and food quality relation don't go accordingly at all. I wish I could give this 4.5 stars...the only thing wrong with this visit was the fact that the waitress didn't speak English. She did, however, keep our glasses full and our orders were just right. Decided to try it and was disappointed for more than a few reasons. I asked the waitress what she would recommend and she didn't know. So I got the popular Lomo Saltado. Soggy fries with steak, Onions and wedged tomatoes that come with white rice. Not very flavorful. Their green sauce is good. The waitress was rather rude or extremely shy. She placed my silverware on the other side of the table and acted as if she had to go and didn't have time for me... while the place was mostly empty. The ambiance, while the restaurant is nice inside, there were 3 TV screens blasting CNN en espańol. That, perhaps, was the killer for a dinner. With Peruvian Andean music and their waltz and boleros being amongst the most beautiful music in the world... and would have been nice to have it as a backdrop while you enjoy dinner, instead I had to listen to politics and all the stupidity on TV. Their menu is rather large and I might give them another chance so I can try other things on the menu. read more

Tried this place for first time to have dinner. All my favorites were not available so I was pretty bummed. I settled for an old dish I used to eat. It was very good! The waitress was certainly not the most impressive as she didn't even seem to make the effort to smile, but the tasty dish, saltado de pollo made up for it. They close at 9 and at 8:30 as I was finishing up my meal she was turning chairs over and turned off the OPEN light. I got the hint but certainly took the time to eat at normal speed. I would eat here again but earlier in the afternoon to get to enjoy my favorites. I hope the cheerfulness lightens up in the daytime. read more

This was nice. Not a particularly descriptive sentence, but it's about right. Speaking Spanish will be to your distinct advantage when ordering stuff and I'll just save you the trouble and tell you they have literally zero on the fountain without sugar, except water. Menus are a bit slapdash, though. They do have a chalkboard daily special, which can be intriguing as well. That aside, they do a pretty bang-up job with the actual food. Bistek was cooked to perfection, though the fries were a near-complete disaster, greasy, limp, flaccid, useless, disgusting. The fried egg was a very nice touch. The fried plantains were more like actual bananas and not too hot...until the introduction of some hot sauce, which elevated them considerably. The green chile sauce they had was interesting and quite tasty, though it should be used judiciously, as it can easily overpower. Rice was done pretty well. Yucca and fried chicken were both interesting, but nothing I'd care to repeat. Overall, this really demonstrates how outstanding this type of cuisine can be, even with service a well-meaning, but still borderline disaster. Worlds better than Machu Picchu and something I would definitely consider hitting up again next time I needed a solid change of pace...just wish they had better drink selections, though... read more

My wife and I go about once a month. The meat is flavorful. The fries are good. The plantains are well prepared. All the dishes I have tried are tasty and filling. They seem pretty authentic. The dining atmosphere is casual. You seat yourself and pay at the counter when you're done. There always seems to be a soccer game on the TVs, but the volume is off, so people can talk. It was packed in the restaurant a few weeks ago when Peru was playing in that big international tournament (sorry, I don't follow soccer, so I don't know what tournament it was). But even then we didn't have to wait for a table. Dishes are typically 10 to 14 bucks a plate, and is enough to fill me up (180lbs man) I take my family here when they visit from out of town. Service was good but appetizer came out after first dish and second entree was quite delayed. Small kitchen crew cranking as fast as they can to put out quality dishes. This is the second time I visit this restaurant and while the food has good taste, there are some things that are critical to a successful restaurant and unfortunately, this one doesn't have them. The place is not clean, granted, I've been there in the evening. Nonetheless, someone should sweep and keep a tidy place at all times. I also understand that the one person I've seen waitress/hostess and probably everything else is tired and anxious to go home but should not start stacking chairs on tables and making me feel I should leave in the middle of my meal. Finally as if the above mentioned is not enough, the rice with seafood (arroz con mariscos), should contain more than 5 small shrimp, 4 rings of calamari and 2 mussels. The flavor was great and the green (ají Huacatay), was delicious and it helped me eat every morsel of rice which was plentiful! I'm a huge fan of Peruvian cuisine and enjoy seeing new places but it's always disappointing when a Peruvian restaurant does not live up to basic standards to accurately reflect the rich tradition of Peruvian cuisine as a delicacy to be enjoyed in the proper preparation, presentation and atmosphere! I hope they take this review in the spirit to help them improve and be successful. read more
