Upon entering La Flamenca, I was convinced I had found my final culinary resting place. The restaurant is situated in a white walled cavern, with moorish inspired tiling which really do look like an Andalusian pueblo. Of course, the usual matador tat calls to mind the tackier tourist restaurants of Spain's beautiful South, but that's a forgiveable sin. Why the two star rating then? Unfortunately positive first impressions soon melted away when we entered the restaurant which was almost entirely colonised by a twenty strong group of stag nighters dressed as bull and matadors. More than just making me cringe a little, it was also impossible to hear anything - the acoustics of the cave really don't lend themselves well to big parties as all sound just reverberates deafeningly round the room. So we moved into the bar area, which had a far more pleasant and convivial atmosphere. An acceptable bottle of Rioja ordered and we were just beginning on our starters (a tasty enough selection of cured meats), when lo and behold, our main course arrived all at once. The selection of tapas wasn't particularly warm and all tasted disappointingly like it had been premade and microwaved. Although the total bill wasn't wild, it still felt overpriced when the mis-timed service and mediocre food was taken into account. And so, my quest for a decent Spanish meal outside of Spain continues...

The food was delicious (can't remember everything that we sampled, but i do remember the grilled sardines, baked choritso, meatballs (particularly good), cheese & that thin salty ham & bread (great bread) and really good olives). I agree with Matstars in that the rioja is very good. Also had a cognac and espresso to finish off. I think that it cost around £100 for three of us, but we were on a pre-Christmas day out and weren't holding back (hmm, i might have had two cognacs, come to think of it!). It was a fabulous lunch and the perfect pit stop. I would go back anytime (and hope to see some Spanish dancing!).

I am actually usually quite a big fan, although on my last visit they actually let me down and served my tables food out pretty cold - when it should have been piping hot! This was disappointing... but I'll get the bad point out of the way first! Right, on to what I love about the place... this particular branch at Cabot is better in my opinion than the one on Park Street, it's really modern and well decorated, and you get a real sense of a Spanish atmosphere from the interior décor and the tables which is pretty cool! I'd probably recommend going for an evening meal as oppose to lunch time though, because the ambience and the lighting is much better. The also have outdoor seating, and being under the closed roof of Cabot you could even sit here when it's raining and stay dry! They have those outdoor heaters too which make it a real option to enjoy sitting outside! As for the food, although it was cold last time, every other time I have visited I have been really pleased. They do a great variety of tapas, and its such a fun thing to share with group of friends! Although the tapas are fairly reasonably priced, be aware that they are fairly small and you are advised to order a good selection, so it can get fairly pricy! I would recommend this branch though, and it's a great place to go for a birthday celebration - they do sangria too to get you into the Spanish drinking mood!

The lady who seated us as if we wanted water, we ordered a bottle of still for the table. While looking over the menu about 5mins after being seated a waitress came by asked if she could take our drink order, the other lady had clearly forgotten our bottle of still. This waitress apologized and quickly brought our water and cocktails. My margarita was fantastic. Once ordering our food I had a chance to look around, it was fairly busy and you could hear chatter from the tables around us but it was quiet enough you could easily speak to those at your table, I loved the industrial look they had going on lots of wood grain and metal with low warm lights and a single tea light candle on each table, gave the place a relaxed and welcoming vibe. To start we ordered their sourdough with olive oil (delicious but I wish the olive oil was on the side so you could dip it yourself instead of covering the bread in it, you will end up with olive oil on your hands with this dish), iberico and manchego drizzled with honey (the cheese with honey was amazing...creamy nutty slightly sweet) next out was the seared tuna (by far my favorite of the night, you could taste the quality of the tuna it was simple highlighting the natural flavor, so good!) then came the cauliflower manchego (the cauliflower was so good basted in a brown butter!) patata bravas (this was my least favorite dish of the night, the potatoes themselves were good nicely seasoned and crispy but they served them in a sauce that made all the bottom potatoes in the dish soggy and the taste of the sauce was overpowering) our last savory item of the night was the chateaubriand (fantastic, I perfectly cooked, tender and tasty)...to finish off the evening we had flan (sweet custardy traditional) and chocolate mousse (rich creamy, well balanced, served with high quality evoo, sea salt, and thin crispy sourdough). Overall it was a fantastic night out, slightly slow service, but the food more than made up for it. Will absolutely be back again!

Now being able to compare that to what Moma prepares here in Bath England, I concede the trophy to Moma. It does not hurt that the service is first class. Damien, set us up to succeed with welcoming words and encouraging advice. Wrap your head around Shrimp Paella with the perfect "Socarrat" or Smoked Oxtail, delicate in flavor and texture. I cannot explain the homemade Cavier, for a chemistry degree is required, but delicious comes to mind. The devotion to cooking well is without comparison for me. Moma deserves many accolades, but I hope he is happy without Michelin recognizing his food....for I fear I may never get in again.

With a floor to ceiling glass front, Bar Celona tries it's hardest to create a mediterranean feel by bringing the outside in, but to be honest, the effective is a little lost when the outside is Kingswood. The interior is quite pleasant however and has a nice atmosphere, but the food for me isn't quite as good as you would expect. It certainly doesn't taste the freshest and I suspect the microwave gets a little more use than it should do. They do pretty decent coffee though and the staff are very friendly so it's definitely worth popping in for a drink, if not for lunch or dinner.

I went to a free gig on a Sunday night put on by a mate, and as you'd expect from this kind of enterprise, the sort of crowd that come here were very warm, friendly and receptive. This is helped by the bar, which is a relaxed venue, long and thin with plenty of wooden seating and tables and a bar at the end. They're available for private hire, have a late licence and host a regular open mic night, so there's something for everyone here and no excuse not to attend this friendly little venue.

I like the fact they have a massive blackboard wall, with lots of menu choices, from tapas to light bites, and have specials too. We headed to the back of the building which almost feels conservatory like. The whole menu looked mouthwatering, I opted for the Home Smoked Trout with cream cheese, scrambled egg and radish salad. All of the flavours really complemented each other, and the scrammed egg was the lightest and fluffiest I've ever tasted. It was an ample portion, and really set me up for the rest of the day. The other thing I should mention is price, you get high quality for a great price. My brunch was priced at £6.90. The perfect price for a lunch deal in my opinion. Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm mmm mm: sigh of food-related pleasure…read more Tucked away in one of Bristol's quirkiest corners (quite literally, it's on a corner) one can take refuge in Poco Café Bar safe in the knowledge that they are in good hands. Whether it's a caffeinated pick-me-up that you're after, a hearty stomach filler, a light bite, or even a hangover cure, I can vouch for the high quality you will receive. All four members of our little party were suitably impressed, and if anyone had been eavesdropping on our table, they would have heard frequent exclamations of pleasure along the following lines: "Oh you must try this...", "God this is delicious...", "Wow that looks good!" and "That was so tasty I want more!" So what's the deal? What's so good about it? Well I simply must start with the coffee, it is mouth-wateringly good. And I can be fussy about coffee (as can my companions) so it really is saying something. It comes served up in a comfortingly solid mug for those who might be feeling a bit 'fragile' - or if you would prefer a super strong coffee, a double strength version can is offered up in a chic little tumbler. PLUS they are amazing value - one tasty Americano only costs 150 pennies. Think of it as half the price, but double the taste of places like Starbucks & Co. The food is also something special. Even the bogstandard basics have little upgrades to make them even more wholesome. For example bread is replaced by sourdough, quinoa is available as well as rice, and even the baked beans are homemade! And if that's not enough to tantalise your tastebuds, how does a sourdough sarnie with bacon, rocket and harissa sound?...and that's just the lunch menu! We ourselves, went for a late breakfast and I was able to enjoy a bowlful of fresh fruit, apple compote, yoghurt and granola (see photos) all just for £4. It was the most deliciously nutritious thing I've eaten in a long time. My friend on the othe rhand opted for the 'Moorish Scramble' and can confirm it lives up to its name, served up with lip-lickingly tasty slices of chorizo. Om nom nom indeed. What else? The setting is rather soothing. There's quite a calming atmosphere about the place. And even though I wasn't quite able to get there this early, it actually opens at 9am on weekdays which pleases me: one of my pet peeves is places that advertise breakfasts but then don't actually open until 11am. Furthermore, it opens late Wednesday - Sunday to cater for dinner as well. It would appear that Poco is quite versatile and covers all areas from casual coffee to full-on dinner menu, and I'm willing to bet it does all of them with a flourish.
