Overall: Not particularly authentic, but good enough when the craving for Mexican strikes. Food: Chips for the chips and salsa were not particularly high quality. The entrees were well flavored and a good portion size. We had ordered the flautas and chipotle chicken fajitas, which I recommend. The magaritas were strong, but nothing special. Service: Service is acceptable for a Mexican restaurant. A little disorganized, and there was some confusion regarding the specials. But they kept our water filled. We live in the area and have been going on average once a month since they opened. We have tried a lot of different items - fajitas, tacos, burritos, chimichangas, and poblanos, margaritas plus many more. Everything has been pretty good. When choosing chicken items we prefer the grilled chicken over the shredded. Sometimes the shredded chicken is a little wet and more peppers than we prefer. For beef the shredded beef is very good. This week I tried something new. It was a special called Popeyes Pollo and if I was grading this item alone I would give it 5 stars. It was a grilled type chicken with spinach and cheese on top. It was cooked very well and even my husband and son who are not fans of spinach liked it very much. The wait staff is decent. Some days the service is great some days so so. But the food always comes out quickly and the owner really goes out of the way to make everyone feel welcome. As one of the other reviews stated he treats everyone like family. This is part of the appeal of this place. They also have a game room in the back with pool tables a few video games and crane type games. This keeps the kids happy when we are enjoying a margarita or a more leisurely meal. They recently built a patio out front and that is another bonus if you enjoy outdoor seating. The decent food, good margaritas, and the warm environment that the owner created make this our favorite Mexican restaurant. read more

El Rancho replaced Yocono's in West Akron which I had never visited (I thought it looked kind of creepy, actually). We stopped in for the first time after they had been open for just a few days and I have to say I was surprised with how nice the restaurant looked and how good the food was. We have been back 6 or so times since and I have not had anything I haven't liked. The service is also very good. My drink never sat empty and I've never left hungry! The food was so tasty. I wish I had more. I got the fish (red snapper) tacos with a side of guacamole. As a fish taco fanatic, I have to say they were delicious. This restaurant uses high quality ingredients. The fish was moist and flaky and the pico de gallo with the creamy cole slaw (very delicious by the way) was incredible. You also get a very generous portion: 3 full tacos supplemented with rice. For so much quality food, the price point was great. $13. And can you believe I haven't even gotten to the service yet! I servers were super attentive. Our table was never chip and salsa-less. They were so generous, I had to take more than half of my food home which I loved because I could savor the flavors for later. I had the burritos mexicanos which were good. Unfortunately, El Rancho has basically the same menu, and same taste as dozens of other mexican restaurants. The food is good, but not worth leaving your neighborhood for. There are probably identical menu items at a place just around the corner from where you live or work. Actually NO service. We waited patiently for over 30 minutes to be seated this evening. Once we were seated, menus and chips dropped on the table, no one came to us at all--we were not offered the opportunity to order drinks or anything. We waited 30+ more minutes and after seeing 3 tables be seated after us get drinks and orders taken---we left and stopped at the cashier to tell them that we wanted to pay for the chips and that we were leaving. This place is great. We moved from Oakland, CA and I was worried about finding good Mexican food again. Everything we've tried has been delicious. I really like the lunch chimichangas. Last night we both got the combo plate #25? It came on two plates and basically had one of everything! It was all really good. Service is fast and attentive. Excellent mexican food with prompt and friendly staff. This is the best mexican food in West Akron. Within minutes of sitting down, you get chips and salsa just like at all the other places. Our go to spot whenever we wanted Mexican. They were consistently good, which is saying a lot since we visited at least once every week or two. I've tried most of the menu and couldn't find anything worth complaining about. We knew we would miss this place when we moved. I have been to El Rancho before and have always had a good meal. Service was always attentive and the staff has been friendly and accommodating. So it was when eating there with six friends last Sunday. Chips are warm when brought to the table and the salsa, while a bit watery, was good. Ordered the beef chimichangas and they came with just the perfect amount of crunch. The white cheese sauce had the right amount of spice, such that I think I'll order a bowl to dip chips in on my next visit. Overall, everyone at the table enjoyed their meals without complaint. Unfortunately, there are no drink specials on Sunday (probably why they weren't very crowded) so my next visit will be during a weekday Happy Hour or on Saturday. read more

Can't say enough good things about this addtion to the 'hood. There's a focus on service from all the wait staff. Always attentive no matter how crowded. Menu is great for couples and families. I am seriously addicted to Popeye's Pollo (#39). Couldn't believe the great Mariachi band and beautiful singer that has been here several times we've been customers. After a couple of Marguerita's, you can think you're south of the border (A lo mejor Guadalajara?) BTW: In past 2 years there seems to have been no turnaround in wait staff. I was VERY disappointed! I ordered the steak fajitas which I was the first person on our table of 8 to receive my food but did not get my tortillas until everyone else got there dinners! Then i opened the foil they were wrapped in and they were all hard and stuck together. I had to wait a couple of minutes for the waiter to get the waiters attention to get another pack of tortillas and when I got those they were all stuck together too! Come on!! Again had to flag down the waiter and tell him this is not good. My third set of tortillas took 10 minutes to get, now it's been 20 minutes since I have received my fajitas and haven't even had any! Now they are cold. Now I start to put my steak in my tortilla and had a hard time finding the steak. I got 3/4 peppers and the other 1/4 was split between onions and the smallest, thinnest and most tasteless piece of meat I have ever had!! If you have never had Mexican food and don't know what good Mexican food should taste like then this is the place for you. I do have to say the service was very good but just couldn't give this place anything more than 1 star because of the food. read more

The first time I came to this place, it had just opened up. The margaritas were weak and disgusting and the food lacked any real spice. I thought I would never come back after that. However I came back for a friend's birthday. I got the super burrito and stayed away from the margaritas. That super burrito with chicken, fajitas and jalapeños was the way to go!! Wash it down with Jarritos and you are set for a good dinner or lunch. This place is a perfect expel of needing to try places at least twice just to make sure you didn't show up on an off day or to make sure you picked the right thing. Enjoy it. read more

Great job on the redo of the restaurant from previous incarnation. Excellent Mexican food (we had tamale, carne asada and steak tacos). I lived in LA and have traveled extensively to many areas known for Mexican food, such as AZ , NM and TX and this place is easily one of the better ones. This place is usually good for lunch, however today was HORRIBLE! I know they were busy due to cinco de mayo, however my friends and I did not receive our meals for 2 hours! I give this new incarnation of the old Yocono's five stars for service, friendliness of staff and attentiveness; and three stars and maybe three and a half for the food. We stopped for lunch and while everything we had was quite good, it seemed disimilar from the typical Mexican experience. Beans and rice. Kinda like love and marriage, horse and carriage etc. So why serve one luncheon entree with just beans and the other with just rice? Dunno! The lady missed her beans; and while I didn't actually miss rice, (my entree was swimming in beans), it just seemed curious that the rice wasn't there. The rest of the food was fine. Not extraordinary, but fine. The enthusiasm of the help was such that the food could have been half as good and one would be tempted to return just for the effusive attention from staff. Come here when you feel underappreciated! Everyone definitely feels they are in the same boat in terms of pleasing the customer. The matriarch is cruising the dining area making certain all is well as is the likely son/patriarch/host, and the rest of the staff is as service-happy and personable as any staff anywhere without being intrusive and annoying. I had a taco and chile releno luncheon entree. The releno was swimming in enough beans that I really missed identifying any discernable flavor from the releno itself. The taco was served on the salad plate and it was nice, but hey it was a taco, knowahadImean? Better than the "Bell", but isn't anyone's? Not as good as homemade. It came with an avocado salad that was a dry salad with a small blob of guacomole on the side, too thick to use to dress a salad,but devoid of other dressing. It was fine without, but?????? A bit of pico de gallo or something would have helped the salad along. I'll return for another try, but in truth the jury is still out one this one. read more

the rice and beans were bland and what really made me sad is that we ordered guacamole and it was turning brown and smelt kinda funny. when we asked if it was fresh the waitress thought that we were attacking her. We would never do that to a waitress and I'm sorry if she felt that way, when another man came by and asked us about the dip we asked him if it was fresh and he told us it was 2 days old!! YUCK!!! we asked if they made any that day and he was hesitant about returning the order. he was able to change it for some that was made earlier that day and it was good . other than that the food was good and the people were nice. we will try again in the future maybe it was just an off day. read more

El Rancho is a Monday night must! Mondays are dollar taco days, and they are delicious! Some restaurants will give smaller portions or charge for toppings on dollar taco days, but not El Rancho! I highly suggest the chicken tacos on the soft corn shells. The salsa and chips are also worth the trip. The salsa has just the right amount of spices, and the chips are usually fresh out of the fryer. The management is always appreciative of your business, and always makes sure your dining experience is satisfactory. read more

If I could give this place a half of a star, I would. My boyfriend and I decided to dine here and the waiter we had was extremely rude. He never once refilled our drinks or our chips. He didn't even serve us our food, someone else did. He came only once and that was to drop off the check which was extremely expensive. Who charges $1.50 for a dollop of sour cream? We were standing at our table waiting for someone to pick up the check and the hostess and another worker were drinking on the job. Won't be coming here again.
