El Quinto Sol was such a pleasant surprise to find in Laredo. As an all-vegetarian restaurant, it immediately stood out to me because I don't always expect to find places like this outside of larger metro areas. But this visit reminded me that smaller cities can have really diverse, inclusive, and thoughtful food scenes too. The menu has so much to choose from. There are plenty of classic plant-based American-style dishes, but what I loved most was the large selection of Hispanic-inspired options, including tacos, burrito bowls, and other dishes that felt connected to the region. I ordered the fishless tacos, which came with three tacos filled with soy-based "fish," purple cabbage, avocado, and chipotle sauce, served with a bowl of lentil soup. It was a massive and very filling meal, especially with the protein, avocado, and soup. The space itself was clean, spacious, and inviting without being overdone. It was pretty busy when I went for lunch on a Friday, which was great to see. They also brought out a small complimentary appetizer with chips, nopales, spicy tomato salsa, and a sprinkle of cheese, which was a fun and flavorful start to the meal. Needless to say, I couldn't finish everything. I ate the tacos but had to leave some of the lentil soup because it was just so much food. They also have frozen yogurt and desserts, plus an area with packaged products you can buy to take home. I even noticed advertisements for El Quinto Sol at the airport, so it seems like they're a well-known local staple. I'm really glad a restaurant that caters to vegetarian diets is thriving in the community, and I think it's a huge asset to Laredo. read more

I've only been here twice for the froyo. It's so delicious and a much welcome treat on these hot days. The drive thru attendants are usually fast and friendly. The yogurt has that perfect level of tartness that pairs so well with the sweet toppings. I chose cajeta, banana, and coconut. It was perfect. My complaint is that it's not served with a lid or anything to keep the goodies from falling all over your lap. read more

Thank goodness I had this option, otherwise I fear I would have otherwise starved. Get the fishless tacos! They had the perfect savory and chewy bite and spice to them (very clean but with a healthy twist given the cabbage accouterment) - I'd order these again in a heartbeat, especially because each taco featured a healthy serving of meaty sliced avocado. The vegan tofu taquitos were DELICIOUS and surprisingly filling; would have have ordered another if I had known that. And the salsa that came with them was delectable! I also ordered the chickpea soup, which was good but nothing memorable - seasoning was light and it needed some thickness to it IMO. I thought these three things would be a substantial but reasonable meal. Ot was enough to feed three people - which is great because I had leftovers for lunch! I came back the next day to pick up a burrito for my long journey home. This thing was as big as my head and it literally lasted me all day (10 hours). I ordered their new Chony soup, but after the first bite I noticed that the broth tasted similar to Knorr seasoning. Knorr contains animal fat. I asked the waitress what it was that they used to season the soup because it tasted just like knorr and wanted to make sure it was not knorr. I told her that I didnt care about the recipe, I simply wanted to make sure I was eating a vegan soup. She went to the back and asked, she came back and told me they would not confirm nor deny that it was knorr. As customers, we have a right to know ingredients in our food due people have allergies and/or restrictions. I cannot trust El Quinto Sol anymore and it sucks because they are the only restraurant in Laredo that serves "vegan" food, well at least I thought they did. We were looking forward to a night of good pizza (I specifically recommended Quinto Sol's Tortipizza) from various places around town. The boy who took my order over the phone did not understand what I meant when I said Tortipizza and asked if I meant Tortifica...which isn't even a menu item. Next I ordered a Sopa Julienne, and he kept asking if I meant TORTA Julienne, which again, is NOT a menu item. We clear it up, or so I thought, and he says it'll be 20 minutes. We show up, wait in line for 20 minutes, get to the window, only for the manager to tell us there is no order under my name and no order for a Tortipizza and Julienne soup under any name. Infuriating. She apologizes but offers nothing to make up for it, not even a little "I'll talk to him." Nothing.
