Not going to win any awards for decor but the place is cheap and the food is good. They serve a buffet on Friday and Saturday nights that draws a decent crowd. A sign of a good Mexican restaurant are Mexicans and there are many who visit this El Potro. We are fans of El Potro. Funny but true ~ get the Chilequiles Verdes if you're adventurous or just try the Fajitas to start. You will be happy happy happy either way. We went on friday night to find a Mariachi band playing all sorts of cool songs from Lady Gaga to Charlie Daniels. We were all amazed at the talent. The staff was friendly and the food was great. We will be going back next week for the food and entertainment. read more

Popped over one afternoon because i keep seeing the sign out front, mexican buffet and basically, i had to have it.. It is, like many others have said, authentically mexican in style and design and the staff was extremely friendly. It had a homey feel to it, like you can tell many people are regulars here.. I didn't order the menu items and choose to try the buffet.. At first i was shocked because, lets face it.. it looks small but as i began to create my mexican awesomeness i realized, there is literally everything i needed to create just about any dish i wanted to..Various chickens porks and beefs all styles, lots of vegetables, rices, tortillas and a bunch of stuff i honestly, didn't know what it was.. (hey, i usually only get quesadillas) and even more to my surprise, for a buffet in the middle of the day, items were fresh and kept coming out and i never had to order a drink refill, waitress was on her game! In fairness, i've been to Garibaldi's and i really just don't like it.. the food, the prices, the staff and now that i'm new to the area i love having somewhere close by that serves great mexican food! read more

Visited this restaurant on a Friday night after someone recommended it. We have been to the one in the Dr. Phillips area which is pretty good, not the best but were told this was much better. They feature a buffet during most hours they are open our you can order directly off of the menu. Wasn't bad but we weren't really that impressed, and the service left a bit to be desired as well as we didn't see our waitress that often. Food is reasonable, but there are too many other Mexican Restaurants in the area that are much better. read more

Very nice staff, fast takeout. Unfortunately the food was awful. The burritos were soggy, soaked in some pinkish and white goo and we couldn't eat them without using utensils. Actually, we had a hard time figuring out what they were. There wasn't much flavor to any of the food we ordered either. I was so excited when we moved 3 minutes away from this restaurant but when we went the service was horrible! Food was pretty good but not good enough to compensate for the complete lack of customer service. Our server and most of the other staff sat in booths eating and joking around with each other, completely ignoring us while we were dying of thirst, waiting for a box and our check. Finally got our servers attention and she still didn't get up just had someone else come over who didn't seem like they cared either and then that perdon sat back down forgetting that we also asked for a to go box and our check. Flew in today from Ohio and we stopped for dinner about 6:30. The sign out front said 2x1 margaritas. When ordering I said I would like the 2x1 margaritas. When cashing out I checked to make sure I was charged correctly. I was told 6.99 for two. I ask how much is one margarita and was told 4.29. Long story short the manager comes out and says two for 6.99 . He argued that he had been in this business for years and I shouldn't tell how to run it. He finally charged me the cost of one margarita and I was told " I don't want to see you in here again". Really!? Food was good though. Just confirm any specials before you order. read more

This place is GREAT!!!! I just moved here from Michigan where the only excuse for Mexican food is a Taco Bell. The prices are great, the service was friendly and attentive, and the food was well received. The roasted pork was wonderful! This place claims to be "the real Mexican food". Well they are not. I will not return here. I order an Horchata, it was water down with no real flavor, maybe made from powder. Ordered queso fundido, the cheese they use was too strong and could barely taste the chorizo. No lettuce, no pico and no sour cream to come with it. I ordered guacamole and it had no flavor. Seemed that they mashed aguacates together and thats it, no onions,cilantro or jalapeños in it. We didnt order any entrees because we were really disappointed with what we had already ordered. The salsa and chips they give you at first seemed the salsa came out of a giant can. The buffet which is extra had nothing appetizing on it and the selection is very small. So if authentic Mexican is what you are looking for this is not the place. read more

Wow! Just wow! I don't know where to begin but I'm surprised that the Mexican community here in Apopka hasn't stoned this place to death. They should have to pay people to eat from that buffet. By far the worst Mexican buffet I've ever experienced. No sauces whatsoever on the buffet; not even a simple red sauce. The pico look like it was left over from a week ago. The best thing they had were the wings. Everything was over salted and over cooked. The chips they brought to the table were bad and there was maybe 12 chips in the basket. The waiter was horrific at his job. Never check on my table for anything. My glass sat empty as he conversed with other workers. I saw more work done by the kitchen staff and bussers. I hate to keep repeating myself but I cannot emphasize just how bad this establishments lunch service is. Hopefully, this was just an off day. The one on Kirkman road is 1000 times better. Taco Bell is better. I hope their menu food is better than the buffet. What a crime! read more

Best authentic Mexican food in town , I've been coming here for over 10 years now and never received the bed mail yet!!

I use to love this place and frequent alot .. After what happened tonight and how rude we were treated. I will never be back . We were seated right away and given stale chips .. we asked for another basket of chips and we were given hot stale chip . The music was also just blaring from the band and was way to loud for such a small place . When our food came , the chicken taco salad looked like it had three day old chicken in it!! It was dried , brown as if it was a rotisserie chicken that was sitting in the grocery store for days , it had a metallic sour taste to it !!! The el porto fajitas were burned and the chicken had a very sour bad taste to it , steak was dry and way overcooked , The Shrimp was frozen food not fresh it tasted like frozen burned rubbery shrimp not good at all. My girlfriend and I hardly eat any of our meal we told the waitress " We love you guys , but tonight the food was horrible . " the waitress took our food back and another lady came over and was very very very very nasty to us . She said " what exactly is wrong with our food." I explained and she said in a mean and snarky Rude voice " We have the same cooks here , you two are the only ones here complaining about our food tonight .. Just leave , Don't pay for anything just leave get out . " We offered to pay for the teas we had and we did not have cash on us just our cards however i did want to at least leave a tip for the waitress . So i walked up to desk and asked the lady behind the counter " same lady who was very rude to us" if i could pay for the drinks again and leave a tip on the card. She was red and fuming at this point told me to leave again , just leave . She never said Sorry about your meals hope you come and see us again , I hope next time you will find the food better . Nope nothing just get out .. her manners were horrible yelling at us like that in front of every one in there , what ever happened to customer being right. I would never send Gordon Ramsey in that place because he would do a number on that place , Wow poor customer service !!! I have never been treated like that at a restaurant before. Well needles to say the food was horrible and the customer service was worse ! My girlfriend and I will never be back to this place , we use to go two or three times a month. Today was my first visit to El Potro. Met some of my friends there for a girls lunch. I got the lunch buffet for $8.49 which I thought was very reasonable. They also have a regular menu to order from. Everything I tried from the buffet was delicious and homemade. The guacamole was fresh so good! The homemade flan was also wonderful. Our waitress was warm and attentive. We had a really great time. I can't wait to bring my family back there for dinner. According our waitress the dinner buffet is $11.49(also very reasonable) and has some additional items to choose from. If you love mexican food you won't be dissapointed. read more

Been here many times before and the food is decent, I'm not gonna lie... But tonight, I bought a chimichanga and the menu said one thing and they charged me more. There are quite a few mexixan places in apopka. This by far is the lest edable. I have been here a few times. The buffet well taste like reheated left overs that was not very good in the first place. The tortillas always tast overcooked or not fresh. The rice taste overcooked and old. There are a few dishes that are decent for the price. However this is the only Mexican restarn restaurant I have eaten at in central Florida that is batting 100% for upsetting my stomach. This is one of only three resuarant around apopka I will never go to when friends invite me out and I eatout 90% of the time.
