This is my fave Mexican restaurant. Fast service. Customer service is on point. Food is always fresh. Hot. And delicious. My favorite thing to order is the chicken fajitas but everything's I've tried is great. When someone says Mexican this is always my suggestion. My husband and I are new to the area and El Potro has the FASTEST service of anywhere we've been to around here. The chips and salsa come out within 10 seconds of being seated every time you go, and when you come starving it really hits the spot. I usually order the cartoonishly large margarita with jalapeños added. It lasts me the entire meal and it's so good. I've had about 5 meals from here by now and they have all been delicious - the only one that left a lot to be desired was the "shrimp salad". Really it was just shrimp with toppings (lettuce, tomato, guac, etc). Their burritos are huge and delicious, and their fajitas come out perfectly seasoned. This was truly the worst Mexican dish I ever tried in my life. My family grew up in Colorado, so Mexican cuisine has always been our favorite. The burrito pollo was overcooked and each chicken strip was rubbery and inedible. The cheese sauce was overwhelming and made the burrito taste super salty and soggy. The chips they included were cold. At $31 for 2 burritos, I was expecting a delicious feast. Everything we have tried here has been great. The flour tortillas, the corn tortillas, the queso con chorizo, the chips, salsa, tacos, enchiladas, beans, quesadillas, you name it, it's been great. I'm also happy to say, that this place doesn't try and break you when it comes to price. Very fair pricing. I usually visit another location but I was in the area and seen on my navigation there was Mexican nearby. I was craving it and this franchise is my fav so I said let me try this location. They hit it out the park! Now the location is a bit aged but the food is top notch! Portions were huge! I had left overs the next day. I selected the beef chimichanga it come with Mexican salad and refried beans. I also ordered a side of rice and you can get margaritas to go. They were having a special of 2 for 7.99 I think and they were great! Only thing missing was the salt but I had that at home. I'll have to try another item the next time I go but when you like something you always get what you know lol maybe I'll add a taco to the order next time. I love Mexican food and strive to get as authentic food as possible when looking for it. I've been going to this particular establishment for going on 20+ years. It's a nice balance of great setting, great food, great service and affordability. It's just as good now as it always was (minus the lack of buffet since Covid). This is our go to for Mexican food. Most days they have a buffet that offers a wide selection of Mexican food including their cheese quesadillas, queso dip, fajitas, and taquitos amongst other high demand choices. This visit they didn't offer the buffet so we ordered from the menu and to my surprise it was cheaper and just as delicious. I settled for a fajita salad and Boyfriend got a chicken quesadilla and two tacos. Everything was fresh, hot, and phenomenal as usual! To add, it came out within 10 minutes of ordering. This restaurant has a regular menu available 7 days a week. They also have a Mexican buffet that you can do on Friday and Saturday and all day Sunday for $11.99. I went on Sunday. I loved the fact that I could build my own food. The buffet had all the different choices you would make something with. Vegetarian to meat. They also had wings and I don't do spicy, but I tried it for yelpers. When the fresh wings came out, the smell of the spice actually cleared out my nostrils. The restaurant was full when we arrived and they quickly were replenishing the items. I loved the freedom of being able to make my own Mexican food creations. Quite possibly the worst food I have ordered since moving to Apopoka. I ordered what was supposed to be a DoorDash favorites: the beef tacos and nachos supreme. The tacos were tasteless and meat dry. The supreme nachos were soggy, full of lettuce, lacking meat and just all around unappetizing. When I called the restaurant they said since I ordered from DoorDash there would be no refund. Having grown up in Southern California it's hard to find a true, authentic Mexican restaurant. Between fast food and places like a couple of National chains Mexican food has been appropriated by corporate America with very little care as to details and flavor. This is an authentic Mexican restaurant. From their home made chips to their home made salsa to their home made rice and beans. The flavors and textures are true to traditional Mexican cooking. And for that alone, you should visit. I've now been twice. The first time I ordered a chicken chimichanga. The chef made two jumbo taquitos but I will not complain. The chicken was moist and delicious. The shells crispy and tasty. It was served with just beans and a side plate with all the trimmings. Shredded lettuce, diced tomato, House made guacamole and Chihuahua Cheese. This dish only came with the beans, which was disappointing because I love the flavor of retried beans and Spanish rice mixed together. The second visit I ended up getting the chicken fajitas and they were excellent! Once again, the chicken was perfect! Seasoned just right, not at all over cooked. The seasoning with the sautéed peppers and onions danced beautifully with the tortillas and toppings. The staff is patient and friendly. The chef knows his stuff. Food here was really good, but the upkeep of the restaurant is what needs to be improved. We came in at lunch time and decided to try the buffet. I would say to order off the menu instead. The food was decent, but it was not warm. I am not sure if the heat was on for the items. The biggest surprise is they had good mexican cheese on the cold line, but for the quesadilla and enchilada tasted like kraft american slices. I came in wearing a white authentic jersey. I looked down and noticed that the color from the table was coming off on my shirt. I asked to see a manager. I was told he was talking to someone else. I saw he left that table and the server said he is finishing something up and then will be right over. After ten minutes he never came by and we needed to leave. We went to pay and I asked the person at the register for the phone number to call back the manager. They offered to take my phone number so that the manager could call me. He never did call me. This place is a down home, comfy, authentic Mexican restaurant in Apopka. As soon as you walk in, the genuine atmosphere welcomes you. There was a dinner buffet for the stupendous price of 10.99, and it had shrimp, beef, chicken and fish, along with mushrooms in a wonderful tasty sauce. We did not order from the menu, but others who did got really huge portions. I tried a little of everything, and I liked it all. This is a definite YES in my book. I even liked it MUCH better than Garibaldi of Apopka. To top it all off, there was a great Mariachi band who came to the tables and asked guests what they want to hear, and played with gusto and class, not cheese. We picked our booth and our server immediately got our drink orders. We came for the margaritas! To note, the 2-4-1 specials are only on the house plain margaritas (frozen or on the rocks) the flavor options are not on special. We then went right to the buffet. They have make your own soft shell or hard shell tacos. With beans, beef, chicken and all the toppings. There are also chimichongas and quesadillas. When we got back to the table they had dropped our drinks and chips with salsa. We then asked for extra chips and made our own nacho platter with the meat, queso and guac from the buffet. This may not be the fanciest place or have the most variety in options on the line but it was a pretty decent lunch and the servers were great. read more
