Not the most amazing location or decor for the matter but this place was more designed as a place to pick up your food then to dine in... sorry but it's true! Moving on, the grilled chicken is freaking delicious! It's well seasoned and the skin is crispy from the first bite! They always give you a whole package of tortillas which is nice I guess but I never eat it all.. the horchatas is delicious, one of the best I ever drank in that town.. That place is FIRE!!! But you best speak Spanish. And their hours are hit and miss at the one on Lake St. When we went to the one on Galena they did not have Elotes, or guacamole! Just finishing my to-go order. The location has about four tables but I took mine to-go. While there during lunch several Hispanic families came through and I was the only Gringo in the place. BIG MISTAKE by GRINGOS to not stop in. I ordered a 1/2 chicken with a pint of beans, rice, a package of heated corn tortillas, and a small container of salsa. It was $11 and FANTASTIC! The best way to describe this place: The chicken is good... not great. Timing is everthing here. If you arrive and they are just taking the birds off the charcoal grill, they are moist and flavorful. The smell of the charcoal chicken is heavenly. This location is definitely more of a take out place, there are only 3 tables, so be prepared to take it to go. I went with my kiddies cause we were in the area and as soon as we opened the door---we were salivating! We ordered the whole chicken with all the fixins'--it included rice, beans, corn tortillas, salsa, roasted jalepenos and onions, and a side salad (the #4). The salsa was fresh and had a little kick to it--definitely complimented the chicken very well. The salad itself was nothing to get excited over--but the pickled red onions that were on top of the salad were excellent with the chicken. I thought the rice alone was on the bland side--but with the beans was great. The beans are whole and in a type of thicker gravy sauce--very tasty. Would definitely eat there again. I have a theory. The more shit-holey a resto appears, The better the food. This is best apparent in Chinese joints. If any other cuisine was offered in the conditions of most Chinese restos, most folks wouldn't go near the place, let alone go in and chow down. But we do. Next in line are some Mexican places. There are mitigating circumstances, like most of the time you find yourself in one of these, it's the wee hours, and prolly on the downside of liberal consumption of adult beverages, and/or certain herbal smoking preparations. And other delights... But damned if the stuff they purvey doesn't hit the proverbial spot, especially Burritos the size of rugby balls. For example: I landed up in a highly-regarded but preternaturally ugly burrito joint, in a dodgy part of town, late one Christmas evening after playing a night of flaming Rock and Roll, with a snoot full-literally and figuratively. There were two very zaftig (but impeccably dressed) ladies sitting at the counter, and damned if they didn't scarf down 2 championship-sized burritos apiece. I couldn't finish one. Sometimes the floor show in shithole restos are as good as the food. But I digress. El Pollo Giro is not in the running for interior design of the year, and the little mall it's in isn't really attractive, either. The gal behind the counter barely speaks Ingles. But who cares? There are places to sit, but I ain't never saw anybody eating in. It's a takeout joint. There are a number of things on the Wall Menu, but none of it is available except the Asado Chicken. But that's enough. The Chicken is done up on a Charcoal grill. It's very very simple. And very very very good! You get tortillas and salsa in the most basic combo; and you can go up the ladder, adding rice and frijoles, cibollitos (roasted green bulb onions) and roasted jalapeños. Lettuce salad, corn-on-the-cob, and fries are all available as well. The whole chicken dinner with all the fixin's are a fine fine dinner with plenty to eat for 2, if you're hungry, and 3 if you're a lighter eater. For a while they were offering Tacos, which were splendid; but just as soon as they appeared they were gone. Recently another of the menu items came available, the Adobado Chicken. This is Chicken in a pretty spicy and quite delicious red sauce. The chicken is tender tender tender and all together fabulous. Readers of my wiseacrings here on Yelp might know chicken breast is one of the few foodstuffs I abjectly abhor. Well. The Adobado dark meat was el fabbo, and I saved the breast for last. The Adobado Chicken breast was moist and tasty, I couldn't believe I was digging it. I sopped up the red goodness at the bottom of the styro clamshell with the pieces of chix not wanting to miss a drop. Prices are fine for the quantity and quality you get, and the service is really quick. (there is almost always a line) You won't have any problem with the nice gal behind the counter, communication-wise. Have a green salad ready at home, and a coupla cold cervezas. Completely unprofessional and horrible service! We made a catering order for a holiday party, we paid ahead of time and told them we would pick it up before they closed the day of the party. And to our surprised the day of our holiday party they closed early did not call us to let us know and didn't even remember our order was due for that day. We stood outside for 15 mins calling knocking on the door and no one answered. Our holiday party end up having half the entrees we had planned due to the negligence of El Pollo Giró Staff and management. The following two days we called to understand what had happened and each time they told us a manager was unavailable to speak to us but they would call us back. We never received a call back, after waiting a couple days we headed to the restaurant in person and had to be extremely assertive for the staff and management to provide us a refund, there was no apology or acknowledgment of their horrible service. A fresh salad large enough for two, a container of Spanish rice, a container of re-fried beans, 12 corn tortillas, a smaller container of (somewhat watery but fresh and tasty) salsa, 5 or 6 huge fire roasted green onions, 2 large roasted jalapenos and, last but certainly not least, half a delicious chicken (mix of pieces which I pulled off the bone and put in the tortillas). All for 12.99! Everything was obviously made in house, well-seasoned and well-proportioned. Staff was friendly and their was a line of people waiting at 3pm on a Saturday. I was drawn to this place mostly because of its name, which evoked fond memories of the El Pollo Loco chain, which is to chicken what In-N-Out is to burgers--mostly a West Coast food phenomena. While it's not the best chicken I ever had, they fire up some pretty damned good bird pieces. I received my food quick, and the chicken was fresh off the grill. The restaurant isn't much to look at, but the service is great, it's a warm atmosphere, and the prices are right. Next time I'm in the area, I'll try the beans and rice. When the company I work for acquired a large property in downtown Aurora, my reaction was, sweet an excuse to eat at all those authentic tacorillas. I was not disappointed.
