    a bowl of mexican food

Cool folks, good service, good food, good-sized place. Came in on a Friday. The special is mojarra frita. I'm not sure what that is, so I google it, "Mojarra frita is a Mexican dish very popular in the coastal states. It consists of a whole mojarra fish cleaned, seasoned, deep-fried, and served with various accompaniments. " Well, I guess I'll get that next time. I came for the menudo, and today it was really good; hearty and full of large, irregular shaped tripe. The chicken combo was good too. I'm digging the side of jalapeño and green onions. The menu looks pretty extensive and everything looks good. Definitely recommend.

    Very good .

Very good food. Will be back. Clean place. Can't wait to try the buffet on the weekends.

We were looking forward to this place because Birria Tacos are really trendy at the moment. However, it was a big let down at this place. The menu was confusing (as a newcomer) and it didn't seem like the workers were willing to explain anything to us. plus, we were the only customers at that time and felt rushed to order without being ready. As we were receiving our food, one of the workers who served us proceeded to make a rude comment about how we "ordered so many tacos" and adding extra Birria Taco soup (but not as a complimentary addition). The overall customer services lacked professionalism and we didn't feel welcomed there. Getting to the food, some tacos had very large chucks of meat and the food tasted very bland. Maybe we just weren't accustomed to the tastes, but it was not an enjoyable experience considering as a group of 4, we spent $25-$30 each. Will not be coming back!!!

Birria De Res-slow cooked beef that came with cilantro, onions, and slightly crisp taco with the meat in it.

The soup was so flavorful and the meat was definitely tender. The best Birria De Res I've had so far. Wished they have spicier sauce, but that's ok I brought my leftovers home and added my own chili powder and hot sauce and the soup was still so good! Staff was welcoming and helpful. Restaurant was clean overall. Would be nice if the menu could be viewed at eye level, had to look up at the menu hanging above the ordering area.

If you haven't been here, what are you even doing?!…read more My favorite spot for Mexican food is @elburritomercado in St. Paul. You may also recognize their logo at the MN State Fair and their food truck at various events. Overall if you've never been to their actual restaurant and market... you gotta. They have a full market and goods side to find all of your needs to take home and cook. As well as prepared items to bring home, heat and serve. I highly suggest this for taco night at home. Everything is fresh, delicious and made there in house. They have a walk up order area with casual seating, a full sit down restaurant area and an awesome patio. In the warmer months they have their Elotes truck out near the back entrance. The customer service is friendly, welcoming and very helpful if you have questions or need recommendations. I recently was shopping the grab and go deli and was trying to decide what meat to go with and two separate regular shoppers pointed me to some awesome picks so shout out to helpful strangers. I'll pass it along if I see someone staring at the wall of options someday. The staff working the deli window was also extremely helpful in picking out a good salsa heat level and gave a few samples to ensure my decision. Remember always ask for recommendations if you're not sure! My go to items to eat in: Nachos Supremo with chicken (when I want nachos THIS is the dish I want) Burrito Tradicional Churros My favorite grab and go items: El Burrito Mercado Tortilla Chips-these are the best Queso Fundido Nacho Mexican Rice w/veggies Mild Chicken Shredded Beef Ground Beef Guacamole Crema Mexicana Mexican Shredded Melting Cheese Obviously fresh soft tortilla shells are a must here too This place is one I love to point people towards because it's an awesome experience with great food and great people. My wife said I looked like was about to cry when a inch cup of carnitas fell out of my taco and bounced down to the floor. Our recent visit my wife got the carnitas tacos, I got the torta and an order of the Rajas and for drinks were ordered the pineapple express margarita and the habanero cilantro margarita. I'm lucky enough to live just minutes away from this absolute gem in St. Paul, MN…read more In the summer, I plant myself on La Costa's "patio," which is actually just a handful of tables on the sidewalk-nothing fancy, but I always enjoy it on a warm day. Every time I visit La Costa, I have to get the chips and queso dip. La Costa offers Blanco and Nacho Cheese queso, but I wouldn't know about the Nacho because my heart and soul belong to Blanco. It is, without exaggeration, the best queso in the area. Their chips are also seasoned perfectly! For drinks, I used to ride hard for the Vallarta Margarita because cucumber margs are my favorite. But at La Costa, it's just a tad too spicy for my taste, not that it stopped me from ordering it repeatedly. Then I met the Mangonada Margarita. I am not usually a blended margarita girly, but this one is creamy, smooth, and somehow doesn't require the lung strength of a competitive swimmer to drink through a straw. As for food, I've eaten my way through a decent chunk of the menu. Some highlights are the Fish Tacos, the Ceviche, the Mole Enchiladas, and the Chimichanga. I tried the Camarones A La Costa recently and while they were good, I'm loyal to other dishes on the menu. The mole enchiladas pack heat. The mole sauce sits right at the edge of my maximum spice tolerance (which honestly isn't much). Still, I get them from time to time because they are so good. My husband, who loves spice, thinks they're incredible. The fish tacos are mild but flavorful. The ceviche is also a must if you love seafood. Today I grabbed the chicken chimichanga to go, and they absolutely stuffed this thing with chicken and rice. They also gave me a fat cup of queso on the side, which I deeply respect. I skipped the beans and doubled up on rice. 10/10, would do it again. La Costa stays on my rotation for a reason.
