Eating pumpkin ice cream should be Number Two. 85% Chocolate should be Number Three. Okay, never mind ranking the flavors. Just buy a ticket for a three month stay in Buenos Aires and eat everything Alchemy has got. * * * Alchemy is widely considered to be one of the best ice cream parlors in Buenos Aires. The reputation is fully deserved. The ice cream menu is presented on the wall as a sheet metal table of the elements. They light up the flavors they have on a given day. The table of the elements is hard to forget. About eight of the elements are fully alcoholic. They are based on Argentine cocktails such as Fernet and Cola or Gin and Tonic. I was too busy eating the other exotic flavors ... but vermouth and orange ice cream sounds just fine to me. * * * We have been eating here a lot. Why shouldn't your days end being happy?

There's outdoor seating, though mostly smokers congregate there. Even at 9 pm, several families were arriving to enjoy gelato. We had cocktails, pizza, and gelato. I seriously considered ordering a chai tea to go but decided against it at the last minute (it looked legit). The gelato list here is ridiculous!!! You cannot help but smile at the options. You must check it out.

This is a review of the branch of Helados Italia at Juncal 1760 where the ice cream was wonderful…read moreand the service was cheerfully inept. I speak Spanish pretty well. And have for 40 years. Ice cream Spanish is fairly straightforward. At Helados Italia I was suddenly transformed into one of those situations like Jack Nicholson in Five Easy Pieces. I wanted one scoop of pistachio ice cream in a cup, not a cone. Sounds simple but apparently the rules at Helados Italia do not allow it. You can get one scoop in a small cone. Or you can get a cup filled to the brim with ice cream -- about 0.25 l, way more than I wanted. But you cannot get one scoop in a cup. I'll spare you all the details but I may have written a new chapter in the voluminous book of Americans making a scene in a foreign country as I explained that I want one scoop -- una bolita, una bucha -- in a cup and the very frustrated young woman told me that was against the rules. I ended getting ice cream in a cone which ran all over my hand as I ate it. Ugh. That said, the pistachio ice cream at Helados Italia was fabulous.

Helados Italia is awesome! It is in a super convenient spot and the staff is great with tourists…read more There isn't any room to sit inside but there are a few benches out front. The ice cream itself is amazing. A great place to stop by and take an ice cream break on a day of shopping in Palermo soho
