Another day, another mexican place to try. Went here for dinner with a bunch of people and these were my findings Nice friendly mexican staff; couple of us took the chance to try order in spanish and they were very accommodating. They have a happy hour till 8 with cocktails going for 5 euros, pretty good deal. Fair sized restaurant so good for large groups Food wise, I ordered their al pastor burrito because I love a good burrito. (worth stating, my burrito comparison typically go back to comparing with those i used to have in San Francisco so the bar is high). The burrito was meh. The chicken and beans were decent but that tortilla just wasn't right and brought it down. Even worse was the guacamole, I'm not sure whats going on there but I love guac and this guac made me sad. I wouldn't recommend the burrito here One of my friends got the pollo en mole and I got to try it. Very good! This dish is reason to come to this establishment! It is tiny shreads of chicken in a chocolate chilly sauce served with beans and rice. The sauce was amazing! Not hot/spicy enough for me but this is them catering to the german palette; you can probably ask them to make it hotter plus theres lots of habanero chilli sauce at the table to add (Tip, the red is hotter than the green. Red all the way). Obviously i had food envy and bummed i ordered the wrong dish For starters we had the nachos and tortilla chips with salsa, the nacos were pretty good, the salsa with the tortilla chips was awesome! So fresh and spicy! You won't feel the heat the first couple of bites but i'll come soon enough So quick summary, good place, great pollo en mole, good nachos and tortillas chips, subpar burrito, quesadillas didn't look any better. This place was recommended by a Mexican couple to me. Families outing including young children... ... and we all enjoyed it! Colorful warm atmosphere, food good and plenty. Well ... food is good whenever it is homemade. Avoid desert, and if you insist on desert, do ask to get it without the atrocious cheap ready-made chocolate sauce... Similar with the guacamole, which was beat by all 'red' sauces. Worth 3-4 stars to me, also because it is not overly expensive. read more

I heard good things about this place from another American friend and so my girlfriend and I decided to bring her family here and try it out for her birthday. We all agreed to never eat here again. We started with nachos for an appetizer. They were made pre-packaged chips topped with processed cheese sauce, like what you would get at an American baseball stadium or inner-city subsidized school lunch. Just a few little sprinkles of fresh, melted cheese for decoration on top of what tasted like reheated, canned refried beans and a generous slathering of artificial cheese sauce. Let me repeat that - we were served canned faux-cheese sauce on top of bagged chips at an "authentic" Mexican restaurant. Long story short, our food tasted neither authentic nor homemade. The "guacamole" had no fresh avocado to be found and was more of a runny, cilantro-flavored ranch dressing. The meat on my chicken tacos was dry and tasted anything but fresh. My girlfriend's enchiladas were too spicy for any of us to take more than a few bites; I love spicy food but this was just ridiculous. The mole tasted like Hershey's syrup with Tabasco sauce. The Spanish rice seemed like cheap minute-rice boiled in a can of low-grade salsa. Now top that with the fact that our waiter could barely understand us (in German OR English) and had to be told over and over what to bring us. No one had the heart to say anything to the poor guy when he came over and asked us how everything was. We could only lower our heads in awkward silence. All in all, I need to have a long heart-to-heart with my American friend if she really considers this authentic Mexican food. It's roots are found on a food truck that Maik created to bring its star "Tacos al Pastor" to the busiest streets of Hamburg at rush hours. After trying mexican restaurants in more than 12 countries in the world and more than 20 different cities, I find "El Pikosito" authentic and unique and here are 3 reasons: 1. RECIPES WITH SOUL. Most of the key recipes shaping the dishes belong to traditional-ancient mexican kitchen. Norma (Wife owner and head of the Kitchen) prefers SOUL FOOD ahead of COMMERCIAL DISHES making it possible to try outstanding "Enchiladas Rojas" as you could get them at her home town - if they are too spicy, don't be a chicken. Order extra creme and go! The sauce is tasty enough and won't lose flavor. 2. THE ROCKSTAR OF THE HOUSE, "TACOS AL PASTOR". Outside Mexico, I was never so close to the home taste of "tacos al pastor", a chili mix-marinated pork meat (yet not spicy) and slowly cooked till reaching perfect tenderness. Served with delicious red and green sauces, freshly chopped coriander and pinneaple, these traditional King of the Streets will take you directly to my Homeland! 3. CONTINUOUSLY CHANGING STAFF. Wait a moment... is this a positive or a negative...? Well it depends on how you look at it. El Pikosito is changing the staff all the time, true. But it's also true that it's not the kind of restaurant where you expect to find the waiter who served you mom and dad when they were still dating. My advice is that you attend relaxed and focus on the food, doesn't matter if you need to grab your knife and fork from the empty table next to you, that will be compensated by a lovely guacamole or a good tequila "Don Julio Reposado" at a very reasonable price. Oh my lord. So good!! I ordered the the first tacos on the menu (which I believe are one of the restaurant's specialties). They're filled with lightly spicy, slow cooked pork. You order them individually, so if you like, you can add a taco to your meal or make a meal out of mix-and-match tacos. Highly recommended! My partner ordered vegetarian Amoladas, I believe they were called. Essentially enchiladas with mole sauce (a rich, dark chocolatey sauce made with chipotle peppers). He loved them! We also shared the Frijotes Negros, a bowl of black bean dip served with tortillas, which was very tasty and despite being served with jalapeños was not spicy. Our margaritas were highly authentic and not too strong or weak. We dined on a Sunday night at 20:00, so the place was pretty empty. The service was prompt and friendly, and the food came very quickly, nice and hot. While I'm not from a part of the U.S. known for its Mexican cuisine, I was used to being able to find Mexican restaurants fairly easily... Until I moved with my partner to Kiel. So disappointed. I came here with 3 friends, place was full, but we were seated immediately. I was very excited to come here because I haven't had good Mexican food in Hamburg and have only heard good things about this place. I ordered enchiladas, took one bite and WOAH. Very very very spicy. So spicy that it was not edible. I asked my friends who were with me to make sure I wasn't overreacting and to try for themselves, all three agreed it was extremely spicy. I grew up eating Mexican food and have never had food so spicy that I couldn't eat it! I very nicely told our waiter that the food as not edible and all he said was that "normally it's even spicier than today" and walked away. When he came to collect our plates and saw that mine was rather untouched he also didn't say anything. It would have been a really nice customer service gesture to either offer me something different or suggest something I should order next time that wouldn't feel as if I'd eaten a tablespoon of ground jalepeno seeds. When it came time to pay, I was charged one euro more than what my menu said and also what the menus displayed outside of the door said. I addressed this to our waiter and he proceeded to get a stack of menus out and show me the price of my meal in every menu. To start, I was not amused to pay for food I couldn't eat and absolutely not amused to have him snarkily show me the price in every menu. Luckily, another employee was next to him and let him know that the price did change and not all menus were updated. I was then reluctantly handed two, fifty cent coins and was on my way. Good (not great) Food, friendly staff, festive ambience with a mariachi player. I would definitely come back for the food and as people have been saying, apparently this is hamburgs best. Maybe not for germany, but for Mexican food I found it to be highly overpriced. And each individual thing such as chips and salsa were charged which I also hear is a German thing. Our bill for two came out to around €50 which where I come from would feed a family of 6. The tacos al pastor which is one of my favorite Mexican dishes was really good but if you're looking for the typical corn tacos al pastor with cilantro and onions, this isn't it. Overall, this place is tasty and we had a nice dining experience. However bc of the price, I'd only come back if my craving for Mexican food here needed to be satisfied. read more

Okay, I've eaten here about 15 times and have read all the reviews so here are my two cents: This place IS authentic. If you just want to eat a big awesome burrito in hamburg, you're probably better off at places like Jim and Q (don't want to be too specific in my naming of the competition - if you love mexican food and live in hamburg, these two names should be clear as to what i am referring to). Pikosito is not Tex-Mex, it really has an authentic flare. **There are a ton of new additions to the menu as of around March 2014 - so go try them out!!** The one thing I will say about the place to start off my review is that there is really a lot of inconsistency here. It isn't always BAD inconsistency, but things are not always the same there as they were during the previous visit Drinks: Awesome mojitos and, in general, the margaritas are awesome too. last time we went though, the margs were SO salty that my boyfriend could barely finish his. ... so, in general, delicious, but also a bit of a gamble... inconsistency. Appetizers: the nachos ARE delicious. But, the cheese is definitely out of a can. The beans and jalapenos on top make it to die for, and it TASTES GOOD. Yes, it is cheese from can, but if you accept that for what it is, you will definitely enjoy them. As mentioned above, there are a ton of new menu additions and we recently tried the Chilaquiles as an appetizer. There are no eggs or chicken on them... it is basically like nachos but BETTER and at least in the dish, you're not getting cheese sauce but rather real melted cheese. Then there is a mix of green and red salsa on the chips. it was SPICY but everyone in our party enjoyed it. but... SPICY! we also once had the chili cheese fries.... they were also really yummy but also with this cheese sauce from a can. so if you are totally against the canned sauce, then I wouldn't recommend. main dishes: Entomatadas: I love! definitely not spicy, so if you are lookin for spicy, look somehwere else. but the sauce has such an awesome flavor and teh big plate of three entomatadas, big salad, and plenty of mexican-style rice will DEF have you feeling full. Enchiladas: I've had these three times... here is where the inconsistency comes in again. I thought there were delicious every time, but the flavor of the sauce definitely changes. also, I've read in past reviews that some visitors found the sauce to be way to spicy... i love spicy food so maybe im not susceptible but i know a good friend who ate there following my RAVING reviews, and he LOVES spicy food and said the enchiladas were so spicy that they were not edible. i guess this is a sign to me that they really have changed the sauce recipe a lot. so my recommendation here is: stick with what works! stop changing the recipe! Quesadillas: I've never ordered this. it looks insanely boring to me. BUT my german friends always order it when we go and they LOVE it, so I guess I can recommend that too. Service: inconsistent and depends on the day and the server. if you have the guy behind the bar serving you at all (he wears glasses) , you'll have an awesome time. other than that, it is a gamble. there are always new faces there and the people i used to see don't work there anymore. really high fluctuation. generally that is a bad sign.... but if you ask me, especially in germany, I'd really rather have GREAT food with so-so service, than the other way around! Being from Texas, I would never have expected to find an authentic Mexican food restaurant in Hamburgthey are hard to come by anywhere away from the border. I have tried several dishes here, and they are ALL amazing. The mole is really well-done and the guacamole has a special accent. This place competes with the best-of-the-best, even in Texas! :) What one CAN'T expect to find here is beautiful interior design (also typical of the best Mexican restaurants back home) nor especially good service. I even thought about reducing one star because of the bad service, but the food actually deserves 10 stars, so I just can't bring myself to take a star away. ;) read more
