El Obrero, open since 1947 it's the quinstaesencial Puerto Rican food joint. The "Fonda" emerged in Puerto Rico before restaurants and eateries. The "Fonda" offered cheap and limited menu and everyone knew everyone's specialty and where to find the best place to stretch you hard working money. El Obrero is well known since forever. I remember the place as a student at the University of Puerto Rico. Place of encounter it opened very early and close when the food was gone. Right now El Obrero has changed with the times but given the current economy it is still a good alternative/ experience in Puerto Rican traditional gastronomy. The ambiance is very casual as is the attention from the workers. Everything here is cooked with time tested recipes and served according traditional forms. The founded are gone in the gastronomic universe but El Obrero continues. Ask yourself why? Of course it merits a detour when in Puerto Rico.

Best home cooked puerto rican meal on the island! Bacalao con berenjena is amazing, the mofongo criollo is one of the best I've had, the avocados are always ripe, plenty of tostones and the salsa rosada/mayoketchup is on point! You cant go wrong with any order as the dishes are flavorful and come in very generous portions. I've been visiting Puerto Rico twice a year for the last 10 years and this place is always one of my stops!

El Platanal is open 24 hours and has daily breakfast and lunch specials until 2 pm. The restaurant has plenty of seating and can accommodate large groups. It's clean and there is plenty of parking in the property. The food was delicious- better than what I ate in Old San Juan! We ordered the ham croquetas, maduros, avocado, the grouper with mojo sauce, and peril al horno. Each dish came arroz con gandules. We had a fresh limade and Bacardi mojito. The portions are huge so this a great place to share and if with a large group to order multiple dishes and have a taste of everything. The lunch specials were $8.99. The taxes though... 10.5%, plus two additional tax charges. The restaurant is open 24 hours so it's a good late night spot!! Definitely coming back. Enjoy!

We left feeling disappointed with how the staff handled our visit. The venue itself was okay, but the atmosphere wasn't particularly engaging and didn't add much to our evening. The food was definitely the highlight, but good food alone doesn't make for a great night out. I hope the service improves, because the kitchen deserves an experience that matches what's coming out of it.

At first, I wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt and assume they were short staffed, but that did not seem to be the case. The amount of time between ordering drinks, receiving appetizers, and finally getting our meals was simply too long. There were stretches where we were left waiting without much communication or attention from the staff, which took away from the overall experience. On the positive side, the restaurant itself is very nicely designed and has a great atmosphere that fits perfectly with the laid back, tropical lifestyle of Puerto Rico. It is an inviting space and definitely looks like a place where you would expect to have a great local dining experience. Overall, the food was good and the atmosphere was enjoyable, but the slow and inattentive service kept the experience from being what it could have been. Hopefully we just caught them on an off night.

We waited a long time for water, the appetizer came after the main dishes, and no one checked on us. We had to ask multiple employees just to get water once the food arrived. The food was the biggest disappointment. The churrasco plantain sandwich was dry and flavorless. The mofongo and yuca with chicken were bland, and the chicken was tough and needed seasoning. The staff was polite, but not attentive. Being told the tip was "15% no less" at the end didn't sit right either. There are too many great Puerto Rican options out there -- we won't be back.
