We stopped here yesterday after seeing the good reviews. We had a long day of traveling and wanted…read moreto grab dinner before we drove home. It wasn't very busy there were two other tables sitting when we walked in. When we got to the counter a lady took our order, she was dressed nice so we assumed she was a manager. After writing everything down she asked us to sit and wait. We were waiting for what seemed like long enough that our food should be ready and the manager looking lady start walking our direction with a bag. I looked at her and she "this is mine, I'm a customer, I was just helping out. They're still working on your food." Then she left with her food. It was really weird. Since we ordered, two more tables had filled and the first two had eaten and left. One of the new tables received their food and we continued to wait for a bit. There were only two people working there and the last that was bringing food out and packing to go orders seemed busy so we didn't want to bother her. When I checked the time we had been sitting there for an hour. We asked about the order and were told that the empanadas took some time and they had a cook not show up and if I changed my order it would be faster. (I ordered the carne asada.) I was actually craving it so I declined to do so. She said it would be 20 more minutes for the food and we asked her to cancel the order. We had plans that evening that we were now pushing to be late for. So we sat there for an hour and never got to eat. We left feeling hungry and frustrated. I worked in restaurants for a long time, I understand that staffing can be tough some days and isn't always in your control. What you can control is telling people when they order that the food could take up to an hour and a half so they can make a decision on whether that works for them or not. That's a substantial amount of time to expect someone to wait. We also would have appreciated some sort of check in with information. What's taking so long, how much longer is it expected to be and so on. I hope to get to try the food of we're back in the area, but for this visit it was very disappointing.

I saw online that they did empanadas and coffee (what could be better?) and we knew we had to visit. We live in Indianapolis and visit Che Chori often for empanadas, so we wanted to try Cumbre's breakfast options. I got the sweet corn + cheese, my husband got the ham + cheese, and we each got a breakfast bacon + eggs. I loved them both equally, but if I really had to choose one over the other, then I would say the sweet corn + cheese was my favorite because I love anything corn. They were the perfect temperature to bite into, we didn't have any trying to ooze out everywhere, and they were so flavorful! I also grabbed us each a Dulce de leche pastry and I thought it was the perfect balance for being a treat while not being overly sweet. My husband said he thought it was very sweet, but I thought that the pastry part was not sweet at all, so the dulce de leche filling in the middle balanced it out nicely. I also ordered a matcha latte and got a caramel latte for my husband. The 2 men on staff were very friendly and the patio was fairly busy when we stopped in. We opted to eat in the car on our way to the park so we could get to our hike faster, but I would love to stop here again and sit outside in the sun should we ever be back in Charlottesville.

A paper sign on the door is great when there's an early or extended closure, but that paper sign should be complemented by posts on the website and/or social media. In the past few months, we've probably come by on (at least) 10 occasions during business hours only to find that the business was closed...That's a 40-minute round trip from where we live in neighboring Stephens City, only to come home disappointed. I've never called and had a staff member answer the phone, so if we can't even call ahead... G&G needs a system that communicates closures to demonstrate more respect for patrons' time. We've hired G&G to cater our professional events and even our wedding brunch. It isn't too much to ask for a heads up when they know they won't be open during regular hours, right? Ps. Please bring back the banana peppers in the G&G empanada!
