Delicious Mexican-New Mexican food in Nob Hill! These folks sold the shop down in Carlsbad and moved it up to Albuquerque, leveraging the awesome old Brickyard spot. Same interior, same bar, same TVs, new food options. The chips and salsa were particularly winning, homemade and so fresh and delicious!! The chips were thick and crunchy without being greasy, and the salsa was a verde variety with avocado floaters and lots of big cilantro chunks. Absolutely fabulous! I had the rellenos, which were served dry, strangely. And this is why I said Mexican-New Mexican... no chile sauce?? They were nevertheless quite up to standard. Companions had a burrito each and shared the chicken tacos, which come four to a plate for the reasonable price of $11. They were "legit," apparently. Two soft drinks added to the meal, and our bill was $37 and change after the 15% UNM discount. That's a pretty reasonable ticket for three, these days. It's an order at the counter kinda place, but the server does keep your chips and sodas full. The menu isn't large but includes variety enough. The place is still a secret, so it's not too busy yet. El Nopal is a Mexican restaurant right across from university New Mexico. It's a rather new place little hole on the wall. The food is really good the food taste fresh from the chips they give you to the food you ordered. I would recommend El Nopal for those that want good Mexican food, not the cheapest, yet you get what you paid for. I'll be back again. read more

Not what we expected. Not New Mexican but certainly not Mexican food. I ordered red chilaquiles, they used tortilla chips not my first choice for chilaquiles. The sauce was good. My husband ordered huevos rancheros. The eggs were served on a deep fried corn tortilla. Never seen it like that. The rice was old the food was cold. The coffee was clear as water. Was at UNM Hospital and desperately needed some Mexican food but didn't want to make a long trip. El Nopal was 5 minutes away. Went Saturday evening around 6pm. Only one other couple was inside. Sat at bar and ordered a draft of Pacifico. Was ice cold! Chips and salsa delivered and were clearly homemade and delicious and fresh. Ordered the birrira tacos and chicken flautas. El Nopal is in the old Brickyard Pizza (RIP). This place has a laid back atmosphere that is very reminiscent of its past. They have a handful of beers on tap, and a fairly simple menu. The food is good, service is quick, and you can't go wrong with the birria. It's not *the* best birria in town, in my opinion, but it's definitely up there on the list. Good food and fast service. The chips and salsa were really good; chips were warm and crunchy and the salsa was similar to a molcajete-style salsa. I got the quesabirrias which were really good and came with a side of consome with rice and beans. My girlfriend had the torta de asada which came with a side of fries. It was really really good and had a tasty guacamole salsa in it that made it even better. The place was pretty empty since we came at 2pm but the music was nice and there were sports on the TVs. Stopped by for lunch today. Had the birria tacos which were amazing -- the best I've ever had!! The beef (super tender) and dip were great but what was more amazing were the delicious tortillas. Be sure to add the raw onions and cilantro! read more

Just tried this place out for the first time and when I went in I was surprised to hear that they have been opened since August. I am down here a lot and was under the impression that they had just opened. Walking by the restaurant it was hard to tell that they were open. However, entering it is a really nice ambience, very clean, with a nice young lady at the front taking the orders. I have cheese enchiladas and they were really quite delicious. Seemingly a dish that would be hard to mess up but I have had them in many other places that were not done very well. These were excellent as were the rice and the beans that came with it. A great place in Nob Hill area to get good Mexican food. I told them they needed better signage out front so people can tell they are open. They deserve to have more business because the food is really good. Check them out! read more
