Walking through the Condado area, we were looking for a different spot to enjoy a quick dinner. In a cluster of multiple bars/restaurants, we spontaneously opted to try El Jefe since we were intrigued by the rooftop vibe. Head up stairs stamped with "La Jefa" and "El Jefe" to the upper level where there is an open kitchen, vibey lighting, and a bar with seating. We were seated at the corner which faced onto the street; bonus: an epic fan was right over us, keeping us cool! The host who brought us upstairs was super kind and shared some recommendations, which was helpful. The bartender/server was less warm but helped a bit. We were hoping for local eats but the menu was definitely more American, so we ended up grabbing some chicken tacos and mozzarella sticks to share. The chicken was incredibly bland which was disappointing, but the mozzarella sticks were fine (I mean, it's hard to mess those up if you're just throwing them into a fryer). Onto the drinks - I'm glad my husband enjoyed his Tepucho (tequila, pineapple, cinnamon, peach) because my drink wasn't it. I ordered La Jefa which sounded delightful on the menu (vodka, jobo juice, lime, agave) but was incredibly watered down. It literally felt like I was drinking ice water scented with the dried citrus floating on top :( that was a huge let down. The space is cute and has the setting for a good time, but the food and drinks were lackluster for me. read more

A cool little bar above The Oyster Shack. The hostess at The Oyster Shack told me and my gf about this place after we enjoyed an excellent meal there. It's the steps to the left of the bar area. We walked up and were pleasantly surprised at how vibey it was. There was only a couple people there since it was a weekday and it was early, but that was fine with us. The bartender was great and the views were too. He made my gf an excellent fruity drink and I enjoyed a Medalla Light. This is a great spot! Highly Recommended Thanks bro! I visited Puerto Rico for the first time and wanted a late night dinner with my girlfriend. We decided on El Jefe because they had a rooftop with games, were open late and had decent reviews. We arrived around 12am hoping we made a good decision and were disappointed immediately. The music was similar to hard rock, which wasn't appealing. The restaurant was completely empty and the staff members were sitting on their phones. Once given a menu, we ordered drinks which we couldn't even drink. They tasted like they were made with salt water. After getting our drinks it took about 20 minutes to place an order despite trying to get their attention. We ordered chicken tacos which weren't even cooked. The tortilla broke in half as we were eating and were so dry we had to request sour cream, which they didn't even have. They gave us chipotle mayo which wasn't great but made the meal bearable. I watched them take cold chicken out of a container and put it on our tacos. For $18 tacos and $12 drinks I was extremely disappointed. We had to go to McDonald's after. It was a waste of time and money and I don't recommend anyone to go there Our waiter was very nice, and was accommodating. He didn't charge for one of the drinks which I really appreciated read more

We now live in PR and really enjoy checking out all the restaurants in Condado. Wanting to expand our "safe zone" a restaurant, we tried El Jefe after realizing the oyster shack was too long of a wait. The rooftop ambience really is nice. It's a very chill environment, and Ashley our waitress was also nice. The problem was the food. We both order tacos, and after I told my witches to put the mayonnaise/dressing on the side, she convinced me that it was "really good". Long story short, the topping was filled with onions and mayonnaise, so of course I took it all off, and beneath the topping, it was very, very, very little fish. I don't think I'll be back here since it truly was the least impressive taco I've ever eaten, but again the atmosphere was very chill and if you're not into tacos, you might find something else. The tuna Tatar was actually very good but the wait was long to get the meal after I ordered it bc I was still starving Oh well. Most likely we won't be back. read more

A local guided us to this place. It has a nice rooftop setting above the Oyster Bar. All of our dishes were excellent. My wife had the Jefe salad with Tuna and I had their tacos. The restaurant and the area around it was hopping in a Tuesday night. Our only gripe would be that the music was a bit too loud. read more

I recommend to NOT go there. First red flag, he gave me an open bottle of ginger ale, look at the bottle but thought I wouldn't notice. Then all the food came out all at different times. I'll start with the only positive of the night: ONE employee was attentive and engaging. Well, his job was to recruit customers which he did. He got us. Sat down a couple of minutes after 9pm. That's when the shit show began. At least 15 mins to flag down an employee to order drinks. It's a small place, it shouldn't take more than a few minutes. The kitchen is in public view, so you can see the "chef" preparing meals. He was a one man show and wasn't happy about it. He was mad at his work, and his arguing with fellow employees displayed that. We ordered the mozzarella sticks for an appetizer and didn't get them until our food came out. I'll get to that in a minute. Waiting for our food - the employees had no idea what they were doing - it seemed like everyone's first day on the job. The one man chef had a part-time helper who also brought our food out and also made drinks. He even chatted with some customers while the food orders piled up (you could see the receipts for orders hanging in the kitchen). Our waitress only took our order 30 mins in and that's because we had to flag her down. The clock was about to strike ten and I was getting ready to walk out. Everyone appeared to be waiting long for their food. After I complained, we were told our plates were being made. I looked into the kitchen and saw the chef squeezing Sweet Baby Ray's into a plate. Presumably that was for my daughter's bbq chicken quesadilla. It was late, so we stayed to avoid searching for another restaurant after 10pm. What a bad decision. The food came out. The plates looked like a 4 year old's kitchen experiment. The quesadilla was burned to a crisp. They flipped half of it to hide the rest of the char. My fish tacos were blah - plain as could be. It had the tortillas, a piece of fried fish? And one ingredient- slaw? My girlfriend's birria tacos also only came with one topping. I had to laugh because hey, I'm on vacation and can't cry lol. The whole night was terrible. I usually don't leave reviews this long but man - this was bad for the heart of Condado. Save yourself and go get an empanada around the corner. read more

I went to this place almost every night when I lived in San Juan. The security/slash cook is an amazing person and brought me. The staff is amazing and I felt welcome up until the last few times I went. I could tell the owner was hating on me. I'm sure it's because I had all the beautiful PR women and the money. I may have hit on one of his, no disrespect but they (woman) all look the same to me around the world. You know the song, every other city we go...I see the same..:The last night I was there he deliberately bumped into me as I was talking to a woman. I played it off like a joke but he wasn't joking. I guess the hating had gotten to that level. He said some disrespect things. I paid my tab and left. Then as leaving the bottom level him and about 4 guys tried to fight me. Believe me I had zero fear. I was given a signal from my boy and I complied. We're both SF so I knew. I pray they don't think I let that go. I made a vow to own that place and I promise you I will.
