Family friendly local restaurant. Always quick to get seated, although we wish they had more space (the reason for four stars). Sometimes we end up in a booth with a chair at the end. It works, but crowded space. Now for the food. Chips and salsa are yummy, but you should splurge for the cheese dip and guacamole... super yummy. Meal has good portion sizes and comes out fast. We like the fish tacos, giant burrito ranchero, and chimichangas supremas. For dessert, my husband always goes for the flan. Servers are friendly, welcoming and attentive. I bought a restaurant.com certificate YESTERDAY they are no longer accepting ANY CERTIFICATES!!!! After a heated conversation with the manager he was going to take the certificate BUT DEDUCT IT FROM OUR SERVERS PAY. NOPE!!! Not coming back! This is a POOR excuse for a manager! Our server did nothing wrong to be treated that way! Someone needs to look into his behavior and interaction with customers and staff. Usually only come for 1$ tacos and 2$ margaritas on Mondays/Tuesdays. House chips and salsa are good too. Definitely a hole in the wall with all the good and bad things that entails, so adjust your expectations accordingly: cheap food, paper napkins, strong drinks, leaky water cups, friendly staff, etc etc. Can be very crowded depending on what time you go, so plan ahead especially if you're going with a big group. They do have a bit of outdoor seating. The parking lot is a little tricky to get into if you're coming from west on Manchester but once you're in it there's sufficient space. Main reason it gets 2 stars (would like to do 2.5 but can't) is that they changed my tip (I'm choosing to believe it was by accident; I guess a 2 kind of looks like a 7) and wouldn't refund it unless I came in again on the same day of the week at the same time as my original visit because I had to talk to the same manager who was on duty at the time of the original transaction. On one hand, I understand that an establishment wouldn't want to go around just refunding people's tips, since surely there are plenty of people who give drunkenly-generous tips and then regret it the next morning. But on the other hand, I think most people would agree that a $7 tip on a (less than) $10 meal wouldn't have made sense, and I also think that it seems like it would make more sense for the restaurant to just refund the money when I called in order to keep the customer a customer. The whole "come it at the exact same time you came in before" seems excessive, since surely all the managers have the same privileges to refund customers? I love their salsa. We went on taco Tuesday so it was a dollar per taco. They can do soft corn tortillas, and they were pretty tasty. My domestic partner liked the enchilada the best, and the tamal was robust but not too spicy. Not terrible food, but not amazing either. It largely depends on what you get, but it's pretty much a hit or miss with their dishes. They did have authentic Mexican dishes like tacos al pastor, although they were a bit expensive for what you got. Most menu items were more Americanized Mexican food though, and make up the bulk of the menu, probably because that's what typically sells better in the suburbs. I still would recommend this place though if you're out in Rock Hill, as they at least have authentic Mexican food unlike a lot of places out in the suburbs. read more

Been to El Indio twice - on a Monday and on a Tuesday. Both nights boast of dollar tacos. Tuesday is $2 margaritas. My hubs and I can eat 3 tacos each and get a drink (plus the complimentary chips&salsa) for under $15 (including tax and tip) - bargain! I thoroughly enjoy the tacos; they're aren't chinsy with the fillings. I also think the salsa tastes great and margaritas are the perfect strength. Service for the tacos is always fast - I guess they know what the crowd is there for. Can't say I've tried other menu items though. You may not want to go there on a first date or take out-of-town guests there if you're looking to REALLY IMPRESS. It's very casual (in fact, I've been in gym attire both times I've been). Yes, the decor of the joint is what I would call "festively tacky" but you're not there for interior decor! Keep the food cheap and the service fast and friendly! read more

When I get it this situation....I DRINK ALCOHOL. The situation I speak of is" restaurant atmosphere aggression". I become highly aggrevated with unpleasant dining surroundings. I tend to get elevated blood pressure and take on spuratic outbursts of cursing. The only cure I have found is to immediately commence with the ordering of the alcohol to reign in this anxiety. Of course, another solution is to leave, as I did once run out the door of Winslow's Home. This disease moves fast and the hostile nature it can take on, left me no choice. Now, here I am faced with that dilemha, should we stay or should we go? It is Cinco De Mayo, we just tried finding parking at Hacienda (unless you want to pay $10 to a private) and found that impossible. My son fortunately was not born with this disease and opted to stay. With that call made, I ordered a pitcher of Margarita's. I mean to tell you I squirmed for awhile with the claustrphobic high back booths and all the mish mash of decorations. The cracked wooden bowl the salsa came in sent the hair up on my neck. I could invision the bacteria growning in that salsa. The sweat was upon my brow. Then the Margerita's came and with each sip, slurp, chug... I began to cool. Relax. I ate a chip. Then two. I threw caution to the wind and ventured into the salsa. Our food arrived and with each bite I grew more surprised and actually turned to my husband and said " this is quite good". He nodded in agreement and by meals end there was nothing remaining on anyones plate. No chips left in the basket and all that was left in the wooden salsa bowl was the crack ,smiling at me. The Margarita pitcher was empty and the salted rims were bare. It was time to go, but I was in no hurry. Really, I wasn't. My favorite is the Mexican Flag Enchiladas, and the chile Relleno. Good chips and salsa too. It's like a much smaller, much more intimate Hacienda. On a side note, the staff is so compassionate, that when a car broke down on Manchester right out front, the kitchen workers went outside and pushed her off the road. I had dinner here on Saturday night with my wife, sister and brother-in-law. The food is decent and the staff are friendly and funny. We asked to split the check at the end of the meal and the waiter literally ripped the ticket in half. The restaurant is rather small and appears to have been a pizza hut in a past life. There is a decent offering of imported beers for $2.50 and margaritas. We shared a pitcher of margaritas which were fairly good. I ordered the shrimp chimichanga. The shrimp were grilled and tasted pretty good. The size of the chimichanga left me wanting however, it was a small tube with maybe six decent sized shrimp inside. Probably one of my least favorite Mexican restaurants in the area. Super casual (a former fast food restaurant). The booth seats are high-backed, so no chance for people watching. The food is pretty blah. It's not authentic Mexican, but it isn't Americanized either. The steak comes with rice, beans, french fries and an enchilada and is a grissely cut of poor quality meat. At first glance driving by I said no way because of the looks (I think it's an old pizza hut) but after I tried their food - I'm hooked. Haven't had any better mexican in STL and I've tried most of them. AWESOME, authentic, quick and fairly reasonable....blows away Hacienda, which is right down the street. The ambiance is not the best (compared to Haci) but the food is. I used to come here religiously for their liver destroying $2 margaritas and blood pressure raising $1 tacos every Tuesday. They don't bring us water unless we ask because we're regulars and apparently that means we don't drink water. But that's besides the point. Occasionally I like to drift astray from the $1 tacos and order from the real menu. One Tuesday I ordered the "Burrito Loco". I was expecting a real loco quality burrito to show up and satisfy my drunken taste buds. Instead I was insulted with that pip squeak of a burrito shown in the photo. There's literally just dry chicken on the inside and a dab of cheese sauce spread on the tortilla. If it at least came with that cheap azz rice on the side I would've been OK. But $8.... for that??? Oh nah. So I asked the waitress "is this the burrito loco?" And she says "yEs ThAt wHat yOu oRdEr" and walks away. At this point I'm shocked and appalled. Like, she had an attitude about me asking about this rip off of a burrito she just brought me. Long story short I ate it, but I didn't like it and I will not be returning. Taco Bell has more "loco" burritos than that for half the price and QT has those packaged Chimichangas that are more filling. I should've just went to the gas station for dinner apparently. Moral of the story, don't stray from the Taco Tuesday specials unless you're prepared to be disappointed or you're okay with really small low quality portions that you would probably be served in prison. I love this place! Jon and I come here pretty often, and I've never been disappointed. Yeah, the decor is a little strange (Twilight posters on the tabletops), but the food more than makes up for the fact that there are vampires staring me in the face while I practically drink the cheese dip. We usually start off with an order of cheese dip and guacamole. Be careful, if you say that you want chunky guac, it usually has a kick to it. I always get the Taquitos Mexicanos, and it is SO good. Shredded chicken, onions, and peppers rolled into a corn shell and then flash fried. It is served with rice and lettuce. Perfection. Jon usually gets something different (he is not so much a creature of habit like I am), and he has really liked every item he's ever ordered. The drinks are large (I'm not a big drinker, but one day I will get a margarita!), the portions are perfect, and the food always comes out hot and in a timely manner. Compared to Hacienda (where the food literally looks like it might crawl off of your plate and run into oncoming Manchester Rd traffic) and Nacho Mamas (I don't want to take out a second mortgage on my home just to eat some tacos), I'd take El Indio any day. Also, contrary to the info for this business, they do have a few tables available for outdoor dining. If you're in the mood for some great Mexican food for a reasonable price, try El Indio. Came here for lunch with some coworkers and while the place is pretty cramped, with the booths close together, it was pretty okay as far as far as Mexican restaurants in former Pizza Huts go. The lunch specials are the right portion at a good price, the meat in my chimichanga was seasoned well however the beans had little to no flavor nor did the rice. Their salsa was pretty much chunks of canned tomato in water, but not the worst. I give El Indio an "ehhh" and leave it at that. read more
